Preview of Batgirl 4 and new interview with Miller

MTV's Splash has an interview with Miller and a preview of issue 4. The interview talks about the relationship between Steph and Babs and how the book is more female-oriented. Whatever.

Here's a page from the preview.

I am liking Steph more and more. And the line on the cover -- "What is your scene, baby, we just gotta know" -- is from the Batgirl theme from the 1960s show. I don't know why, but that made me smile.

Oh don't look so humorless, Babs. Embrace the cheerful Steph-ness.

Would that make Dick her dad?

Crying for justice, leading to tears of justice, leading to drinking for justice, leading to being thirsty for justice?

There's an actual joke in there, somewhere . . .

"It's a little more female-oriented because you have two heroines in the book, so it's certainly something that your girlfriend or daughter might like," added Miller. "It's a little more open in readership, I hope -- that's the goal, at least."
Well, what the hell is it -- estrogen-challenged need not apply, or more open in readership? Pick one and go with it.

My standard ranting from last month still applies - Oracle's abilities vastly underused, what the hell are they doing in a hole in the ground with other people's stuff, etc.

Purple sheets on the bed, yay!

Team Tiger Awesome? Is that like Jonas or something? I don't want to know.

My next Steph icon is going to say "MAGNET for TROUBLE" or "THIRSTY for JUSTICE". I can't decide right now.

I don't see them being in the Batcave as being that big of a problem. Oracle needs computers to do her thing, and Bruce is the only one who alwyas had equipment to rival hers. Why set up a new computer system when there's a perfectly good one that no one is using?

Too many connotations. It bothers me tremendously that the Oracle had her own base, pretty awesome and distinctive in its simplicity, standing tall in stark contrast to the cave. I also believe the Oracle should just as easily be able to set up with her own resources and abilities as it would be to relocate out of town. Then there's the times that Steph used to hang out at the cave at Bruce's invitation, until Bruce decided to kick her out on a pretext. I feel like they would be welcome for as long as they want to be there, but that they don't really belong.

Maybe Oracle is working on setting up a new base in Gotham, since it does seem she's decided to move back. But Steph clearly wants to crimefight now, and the batcomputers are the only ones set up right now to hande Oracle operations, and no one's using them. Heck, did we even see Bruce's HoloWill to Babs? Maybe he specificly gave the batcomputers to Babs, since she was the one who could do the most good with them.

And as for wehter or not they're welcome, Bruce is gone, and Dick and Alfred likely have no problem with it if Oracle wants to set up shop there. Especially since IIRC Dick decided to base himself elsewhere due to the emotional ties the Batcave has for him.

[info]retro_nouveau

Yes, emotional ties kept Dick away, but not Babs and Steph, because they have no emotional ties to the cave or anywhere else. Babs no longer has any roots, whereas Bruce's institutions continue even after he's gone. I feel like Babs' life is uncertain and on hold, and will be as long as she's in a temporary setup. Ok for Steph because year 1 wasn't that long ago, but not ok for the Oracle. It's acceptable, fine, ok to be in the cave ... but I wish for more.

Why set up in someone else's house when you're running your own crimefighting operation? Basically it's the same reason she used her own computers before. And also that the Batcave was closed for security reasons.

Well, as I said above, Steph is clearly in a "Crimefight now!" mood, and Barbara might just be going with what's available now so that Steph doesn't go out unsupported.

What security reasons was the cave closed for? Because Babs has always been the best at setting up and running security systems. Heck, one time her security system was Wildcat appearing and puncing the inruder in the face! :P

::sigh:: Yeah. Batgirl and Robin generally do what they want and the adults accomodate and indulge to assure them they're loved. Batman enters the modern parenting age.

The security reasons it was closed for was that since Dick wasn't there and so not keeping up with all Bruce's security runs he and Alfred decided it was better to clean it out and close it after someone already got in once--that was his decision for what his cave should be doing. He claimed they were leaving it an empty cave, but for some reason there's a huge computer set up for Babs to use.

Well, it's quite clear that Steph is going to go out and puch criminals with or without Babs' help. Letting her get killed due to bad intel isn't exactly Oracle's style.

And I don't doubt that an alarm would go off in Dick's new base the second someone set foot in the cave, even if they had left it empty. Considering that Babs had time to have Steph's Batsuit made, she probably had time to tell Dick "Hey, I want to use that Batcave for something. Could you leave the computers there?" And considering how well Babs kep her own security running, I don't think keeping the cave running would be too much trouble for her.

While I do like the Babs-Steph dynamic, I can't help but wonder what would happen if Charlie just happened to bamf into the cave at that particular moment. She'd see Babs mentoring a teenage crimefighter-- a burden Babs couldn't be bothered to shoulder when she foisted Charlie on Helena, and worse, wearing the costume Barbara had forbidden Charlie to wear.

Steph may thirst for justice, but it's not DAAAAAARK VENGEANCE!

Gail did promise to cut people if they tried to fridge Charlie on her watch. (Or was that Zinda? I think it was Charlie.) I'm not sure if that protection extends to being made evil, though.

Of course, we haven't seen evil!Sin yet, so there's that. (Bedard really does like stripping those girls of their motherhood and pretending it's not utterly, appallingly criminal behavior on their parts, doesn't he?)
