Dreamwidth Migration!
Judging by all the Dreamwidth invite spam posts we were getting for a bit, it looks like most of you have figured out without us needing to tell you that yes, indeed, we are moving to Dreamwidth. More than half of you who voted said that you would certainly come with us if we moved to Dreamwidth, and we got many, many enthusiastic comments and suggestions -- thank you all so much.

Now it's time to hammer out some logistics. After some back and forth with the Dreamwidth admins and a look at the mod team's to-do list for the move, we're ballparking the Great Scans_Daily Move Party for this weekend.

It's been confirmed that Dreamwidth will give the mod team link to an invite code generator that will provide us with enough codes to move the whole community (and then some). When we have this url, we will provide the link in a locked post to both communities. If you need an invite to get a Dreamwidth account, all you will need to do is follow the link, click a button, and receive an invite code to create your account.

If you really want to set up an account right now, you have several options:
- You can buy an account. One last reminder: anyone who wants to buy a paid account is advised to do so by October 31st, before the price hike.
- You can go to sd_invite and ask us to send you a code from our donation pool.

The corollary of this is that if you have codes you're willing to donate, it would be fantabulous if you'd go over to this post and send them to us so we can keep the pool going. People have been incredibly generous so far. Thank you so much, everyone.

Note: A number of people donated codes before October 24th, when we first found out and announced that there would be an invite generator to get the community started. We don't want to just assume without asking that you still want to give us your codes under changed circumstances, so we've contacted you to confirm your donation. If you haven't already, pease let us know. Even if you've changed your mind, we still very much appreciate the offer.

ETA: The invite code generator is now active. Existing members please refer to my follow up post. Prospective members, please email us at dailyscans[at]gmail[dot]com. I've responded at SD_Invite but will be screening those comments momentarily. Thanks!

How did people know we existed when we were on Livejournal? Or while we've been here? A community like this is always going to depend on links, google searches, and word of mouth to draw in new members. Not being on LJ is certainly going to put some limits on our growth, since it's the biggest site of this type, but I don't see how Dreamwidth is any more closed off to new people than any other less-popular journaling site.

Because there is no guarantee it's permanent or that Dreamwidth invites will continue.

1) A community that operates on the shady side of Fair Use as much as we do is always going to be in danger of being TOSed. The fact that the Dreamwidth admins know what we do and are willing to work with us to this extent says good things about how reactionary they will be when a complaint comes, but yeah, it's no guarantee (and that's not considering the prospect of the long term existence of DW. Which I think is good, but you may disagree). IJ isn't a sure thing either though.

2) Why would Dreamwidth invites not continue? Once we've got a stable group of people moved over, they'll get codes of their own, which should generate a decent pool of up-for-grabs codes for the community even if they axe the code generator for some reason. And the admin of the site have been giving consideration to dropping the invite code system all together, if they decide they can handle the growth of the site. So it may eventually be a moot point.

The code generator is just to get us on our feet, but we're not going to run out. If it looks like we're getting a sudden swell of new members, they'll top us up. It will eventually expire, at which point we'll be handing out invites at SD_Invite. That's why we'd appreciate if members donate some of their codes there, for future members.
