He's got a couple things wrong about the Avenger. Benson didn't have pitch-black eyes. Every story mentions how light grey, almost colorless his irises were. And it wasn't just that he was a master of disguise but that the flesh of his face was malleable and could be shaped like putty. This is such a vivid and distinctive trait that it's funny it would be passed up.

Still, none of this is the "real" Doc Savage, Avenger, Spirit, Rima or Black Canary. It's just still another take on the characters, and worth giving a shot to see how things develop.

I think the changes to the Avenger are intentional because I think the point of this world is to have pulp style heroes without powers.

That makes sense. Very few pulp heroes actually had any genuine super-powers, anyway. The Shadow was borderline, with his stealthiness and ventriloquism and such, but he couldn't actually turn invisible or anything.

Benson's gun is wrong, too. He used a tiny silenced .22 that looked like a small piece of pipe. His specialty was creasing the tops of crooks' heads to knock them out without killing them (although sometimes his aim was a bit off and he shot away an ear or hit one in the throat by mistake; this was a nice nod toward plausibility).

And this kind of inverts Benson's "tell" for his disguises--he could look like almost anybody, but people who paid attention would notice that he never changed expression.

Yes, that's another change. He also had as much respect for human life as any of the pulp heroes... more than the Spider or the Shadow, certainly.

I think they changed his character to make him more differentiated from Doc Savage. Or to take the Shadow's/Spider's place, since they don't appear to exist in this universe.

Yep, I don't get particularly upset over new versions of old characters, it's been going on as long as there's been storytelling. You can see how this might lead to a clash between Benson and Doc over their different agendas.
