The Enigma of Amigara Fault

Remember to read from right to left.

The story opens in the aftermath of an earthquake that destroyed several towns and villages. Following the earthquake, a large fault was discovered in the epicenter on the north slope of Amigara Mountain.

"This was the sign... of the beginning of this strange incident."

Yoshida's looking for something that she was on TV--a hole in her exact shape. When Owaki points out to her that these holes must be thousands of years old, she responds "I knew it was me. It doesn't have to make sense!"

A  man named Nakagaki introduces himself and says he came here for the exact thing--his hole. Most of the other people here have come for the same reason. He points to a hole in the rock, and tells them that it's his.

The rescue squad is called, and one of them attempts to go into the hole himself, but to no avail.

The next morning, no sign of the man has been discovered. Yoshida tells Okawi that she has finally found her hole.

The next day, another kid finds his hole and, claiming that it was made just for him, goes inside it. More people are now entering the holes on the fault.

He tells her yes.

That night he has another nightmare. "It was another time...I don't know how long ago." In the dream, he has committed a crime and his punishment is to go through one of these holes.

Waking up from this nightmare, he realizes that Yoshida is gone...

Oh good Lord. Honestly, as a claustrophobic myself, the scariest part of this whole thing was his first dream. Being trapped in a mountain like that, unable to move....guh. And when he described his second dream, that he was forced to go into the hole as punishment for a crime, my thought was, "They could just go ahead and kill me; I'd rather be executed than have to walk into a hole like that."

Of course, the end is pretty creepy too, but not in the same way. In fact, after that first dream, the ending is almost reassuring to me. "Phew, thank God, it's just some kind of hideous monster. That I can deal with. Trapped under the mountain? Not so much."

I'm a little confused
[info]roguefankc
2009-11-07 07:01 am UTC (link)
So, is it horrific because of the thoughts of claustrophobia and being trapped in a small space?

Or is the horror in how some evil entity is drawing humans to these holes?

Or is the horror that basically, the humans come out of the holes all deformed?

I'm not trying to be difficult; it's just that for some reason, I don't understand the point of how this is scary, exactly.

Definitely a creepy, creepy story, and I'd say the slaustrophobia is a good starting point for the horror, and the fact that it alters them as they go through is a great ending, but it's the ongoing notion that SOMEONE/SOMETHING MADE THESE HOLES which somehow lingers as the weirdest part.

Strangely this comic mainly makes me feel sympathy for the poor government workers who will have to clean up all these hideous deformed former people when they finally all ooze out.
