DAREDEVIL #43: Luke Cage is kind of a jerk.
I've been hot and cold about Brian Michael Bendis' work. But I've decided to take a look at his DAREDEVIL run with Alex Maleev.
Matt Murdock has found out two things: the Owl is trying to take over the Kingpin's territory with Mutant Growth Hormone *and* the NYPD are trying to get him on tape as Daredevil. So if Daredevil can't do it...

According to Wikipedia, this takes place after Jessica and Luke had their one night stand but before Jessica realized she was pregnant in ALIAS.

Many fans have stated Bendis has a man-crush on Luke Cage. I'm not so sure about that, as Luke is a jerk here.

The thing about Luke Cage is that if he's mad at someone, it usually isn't the reason they think.

So, instead of Silver Age tomfoolery of a hero running himself ragged to keep his secret identity secret, Luke thinks Matt should just shrug his shoulders and say "You've got me"?

Is Luke saying "You're acting like you're ashamed to be Daredevil" or something else? Bendis gives Luke's dialog so much self-righteousness it's hard to tell what Luke's point is supposed to be. That continued into NEW AVENGERS, where Luke would call everyone a "sell-out."

One point Matt isn't making: Luke Cage's real name is Carl Lucas.

I said on the old board that Matt Murdock is very good at being Daredevil and very good at being a lawyer. And both "halves" are a strong part of his character. Which explains why most Daredevil fan's aren't wild about the "Jack Batlin" era of the character from DD #325 to #350. (DD #347 was the issue Foggy learned that Matt was Daredevil, and was furious with Karen and Matt that they kept it from him.)

A Frank Miller story revealed that Young!Matt decided to become a lawyer after his father PUNCHED HIM in the face for DEFENDING HIMSELF from bullies.

"C'mon, Matt. Just beat up some drug dealers to make yourself feel better!"

Matt takes Luke's advice to heart about "his own backyard" when he declares himself the Kingpin of Hell's Kitchen.

I'd say the best part of Bendis DD run is the very last page of issue... 32 I think?, when Foggy sees the newspaper headline of Matt being exposed as Daredevil. Maleev's art really made that scene.

Reminds me of "Hero". Every scene seems to be colour-coded.

Y'know, I should post their meeting in Marvel Knights a few years earlier. Quite a contrast with their buddy-buddy thing in Bendis' DD.

Daredevil didn't really care for Luke's 'Hero For Hire' shtick. I'll post it.

That's the best I've seen DD written since Miller.

I love when people who know Matt is Daredevil still forget the range of his powers. Here Foggy underestimates his awareness, whereas there's a later moment when Iron Fist holds up a newspaper to show Matt something (happened in issue 38 for those interested).

Luke: Put it down.
IF: What?
Luke: You can put it down. He's blind.
IF: Oh, he really is blind. I thought he was pretending because of all the heat on him.
Luke: No, he's really blind.
IF: Oh.

Then again, I just love one of the Marvel U's best martial artist kind of a social goofball funny.

Wait, you were talking about Iron Fist, what do your feelings about Shang Chi have to do with it?

Lies! Lies and slander!

(Eh, mostly Shang Chi's been off-the-radar; while Brubaker gave Danny a kick-ass revival series. Also, comparing the two is kind of difficult, because Shang Chi has less "mysticism" tied to his abilities; no super powers.)

I agree. Iron Fist's character resides on three pillars, a TRIPOD TRIFECTA if you will, of 1) multibillionaire-ness, 2) incredibly zen dude from otherworldy hidden asian city, and 3) social goofiness.

Of course, when they were partnered, Cage and Fist could switch off. I remember when Luke visited K'un L'un and everyone spoke in zen haiku mysticism, but whenever Luke spoke jive-lingo, everyone complained, "You speak in riddles!"
