Knowing that a writer is willing to engage in a deliberate baiting of the readers in the text of the comic itself certainly would make me less eager to pick up his future work, and I say that as someone who enjoyed Mr. Van Lente's work on Marvel's all-ages books very much. It's not only a matter of being annoyed with the content, but the that writer himself comes off as petty for picking at an already sore topic and contempt for the audience doesn't go over well with me. Given the choice between paying for a project from a creator whose work I've enjoyed and whom I feel positively or neutrally toward personally vs one whose work I've enjoyed who's also done something that makes me think he's, however mildly, a bit of a jerk, I'll be likely to go with the former. There just aren't so few decent books out there vying for my comics dollar that I'd feel I'd be depriving myself.
