Reborn in the USA

Four Scans from Captain America: Reborn #4.

Previously on Reborn, Sharon turned herself in to the Normster, who knows that she's the key to recovering Cap.  Sharon reveals in this issue that she's okay with this, as it will at least mean rescuing Steve, and she figures that they'll at least be able to play things by ear from there (better than him being stuck wherever).  However, what she didn't count on was Norman shipping her to Latveria for a rendezvous with...

Ah, Sin, always ready with a condescending word.

Anything, they rev up the old machine, which pulls Steve out of time (ironically, just moments after he had resolved to actually try and change history, by pulling Bucky away from the exploding drone) and forward, where midway here's attacked by a Skull-apparition...

I do like how Brubaker writes all the big-ego villains when they're in a group.

Best issue of the mini so far, as the plot really kicks into high gear.

Yeah, placing the Red Skull in the body of America's most beloved icon, now freshly resurrected, has absolutely no chance of biting them in the ass.

I pray that they do a What If Skull stuck around, if only to see how he'd fuck over Norman!

I am a bit confused about the pairing of Dr. Doom and Red Skull. After all, Doom is a gypsy (using this not in a negative way, just don't know whether there are Sinthi and Roma in the MU), and Red Skull is a Nazi, the guys who nearly eradicated the gypsies.

Doesn't this seem a slightly bit improbable?

Doom clearly doesn't like him, but he'll deal with anyone who'll benefit him (he is, after all, beyond any group; he is Doom).

I thought the thing about Doom was that he is a villain with class?

So? He'll classily (and, really, it's more like pretension to class) make a deal with anyone who advances his interests.

And then betray give them with an add-on to the original agreement that works the same way as a backhanded compliment.

"Oh Dracula? Your hand's failing? Sure, I'll help you out! Here's the wife of Captain Britain for you to use as a bargining chip. No, she's not a superheroine who fought her way out of Hell, why do you ask?"

Earlier in the ish, Doom tells Skull and the others "Were von Doom not a man of his word... I'd have you all put down on the spot."

He didn't have to give his word, though, did he? Stuff like that is empty rhetoric since he's not going to do it.

Why Doom works with Red Skull
[info]politicalzombie
2009-11-12 12:39 am UTC (link)
...same reason why it was okay for Magneto to be retconned as a Gypsy Villain at one point when a Jewish Villain was seen as scandalous.

Racism affects people differently in different places in different circumstances*, and currently, while there are definitely still people who are racist against Jews, that tend to be more condemned then negative portrayals of smaller minority groups.

* Personal Example: There has been at least three old white dudes who assumed that by being friendly and respectful and ASIAN, I'm For Sale, but at the same time, I have the dubious comfort of knowing that if I go missing, the news in Toronto would be all over it, the way it wouldn't if in the case of a missing black woman (and many has indeed fallen through the cracks). Back when I had short hair, and was mistaken as a boy 50% of the time (and therefore, does not get the Girls Are Non-Threatening Exception), I notice that a classmate of mine who was black always get suspicious looks when we walk together, just him, even though he's actually very stereotypically girlish, I've seen new teachers look at him like he's going to pull out a knife or something.

Remember when Red Skull was inhabiting a cloned Steve Rogers body?

Doesn't this feel... the same? :p

In this case, it's his real body.

Won't last, if for no other reason than Brubaker has made it known in the past he doesn't like that version of the Skull (hence, killing it in his first issue).

Goddamn if the man can't draw his ass off, though. That first panel with Doom and Red Skull, you can feel the menace pouring off the page. I<3 you, Hitch.

I really need to sit down and read everything when the run is done to see if it makes sense, because right now I'm all... :/'

Dunno why.

Bored to tears of this whiny, weepy, ineffectual, stupid Sharon Carter. Her greatest triumph in the last two years has been stabbing herself in the gut!

You're right, of course. It just seems like ninety percent of the time, Sharon's a limp dishrag, and now she's cocked it up totally. Didn't she used to be a competent badass?

Yeah, even before I bailed on Marvel completely, I bailed on Brubaker's Cap, because (among other things) I was irritated as shit at Sharon endlessly being weepy and useless.

Okay where to start... okay, two question right ontop of my head.
Do think believe that this will be the real Cap at all? DO think RS will have a better comeback to the whole "Real Americans" BS from Frontline than what Steve had?

I'm for it actually. =)

Amen to that. This is the Victor von Doom I know and love to hate. I don't recognize the guy who's been appearing in Fantastic Four and Dark Avengers the past couple of years.

I never get why they write Doom working with Red Skull

Like dude, any Romanian writer on board here?

Magneto never works with the Red Skull, because Magneto is Jewish...but um, wasn't Doom's ethnic group also oppressed by the Red Skull?
