Spider-fun!

Photobucket

Does anybody know what this is from? A friend of mine linked it to me with a complete lack of context and I couldn't stop giggling. I apologize if it's been posted, but this is the first I've seen it.

(Also, I suck at cuts.)

She-Hulk. Early in Dan Slott's run.

I actually don't like this scene as much as I used to because I can't see Jonah reacting to a statement like that with anything other than outraged, thump-your-fist-on-the-bench denial. He's a newspaperman, he should be as used to dealing with unfair allegations as he is to dealing them out.

Probably true, which is why this out of character portrayal adds a bit of humor.

I don't know, Spidey's allegation is so off-the-wall, in that I think people'd do a double take because simply no one knows what's beneath the costume. I can see Jonah, who probably obsesses about what's under that mask at least half that time, blue screening as a result. :B

Yeah, I agree with this. Topical whiplash to the nth degree.

Thing is, while JJJ and everyone may not know who Spidey is under the mask, they've seen him with his mask pulled up to his nose or enough costume damage to know he's light-skinned. So any "it's 'cause I'm black" statement would be met with "no you're not" rather than "oh er um I didn't know."

Jonah's always been a strong supporter of minority rights, believe it or not. Some examples include the Sam Bullit storyline and his role during the Operation Zero Tolerance X-Men arc.

Yep. I seem to remember there being a comment about him and Robbie becoming partners when he was reporting on the Civil Rights struggle or something, but I can't recall where I saw that.

He had a really odd relationship with women's lib in the Ms Marvel series, too. He was uncomfortable with the amount of "real news" Carol brought in and how seriously she took her magazine, because it wasn't like the mindless "appeal to the wimmens" fluff that sold other women's magazines, and Carol rightly called him out on this as sexist. But he thought the magazine was important to have and he thought that it was important to have an obviously feminist woman like Carol at the helm, who had the teeth to not back down from him. So it was sort of that he was fairly sexist, but also forward-thinking enough to know that he was and that that was a bad thing.

I always figured JJJ was someone who grew up with the New Deal, identified as progressive, but was still a bit uncomfortable with how FAST everything seemed to be going, but he still acknowledged that yes, this is the right direction.

Just don't progress in *my* office!

Why would anyone be surprised at that? He's had a black editor since the early sixties and Robbie being black was never an issue. In fact, a good case could be made for Robbie being the only person he actually likes.

Various boards have discussed Jonah's dislike of Spider-Man with different degrees of seriousness.

The Sam Raimi movies play it up as Jonah isn't sure *what* to make of Spider-Man. There's a dislike of masked vigilantes, an uncertainty of why Spider-Man does what he does, and speculation that Spider-Man just can't be *that* noble. Anything like "Spider-Man heroics attract those super-powered nutcases!" seems to saved for Christopher Nolan's Batman movies.

The 90's animated series had his wife being killed by a masked robber, and Jonah being basically for accountability: People have a right to know who it is that calls himself their protector. They have to in order to keep him accountable.

A dislike of masks is perfectly reasonable, and JJJ has every reason to believe that nobody can be that selfless.

In LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT ANNUAL #2, Sara Essen says how she just doesn't trust Batman due to his mask. I'm not sure if she's certain the mask means Batman is "dirty" or if it is something else. But she was willing to work with him when she took over as Police Commissioner of Gotham for her husband.

Am I crazy, or is there also a version where instead of sitting with his lawyers, JJJ is in the jury? I just remember him sitting with a group of people looking at him disapprovingly...

Pretty sure in a realistic courtroom setting he wouldn't even be allowed to answer the question, as he's not a psychological expert.
