Swamp Thing 26-29 excerpted: Just Say Uncle.

First, some context. This is Abby's job.

So you'd think she could do with a bit of support from her drunk-ass jobless hubby.

Nope. So he tries to be noble.

God, you're stupid, Matt.

GOD, YOU'RE STUPID, MATT.

But then he straightens up and gets his drunk ass a job, and everything's great for Abby!

The passion is back! The sex is great! Oh boy!
And then she finds out all Matt's co-workers are dead serial killers. NOT what a girl likes to hear.

Oh, no, the co-workers come over and she doesn't even have a roast in the oven!

Come on, Abby, you shagged a vegetable and liked it. Getting worked up about shagging a bug seems somewhat silly.

There are quite a few vegetables that are actually pretty conducive to shagging. Bugs, not so much.

Yeah, but have you seen Swampy? He's not exactly your standard fresh-bought cucumber.

"Rites of Spring" pretty much established exactly what Swampy is good for, I think. Mmm, yams.

Isn't that bug also her good ol' Uncle Anton?

Yup, that's the damned soul of Anton Arcane. So it's effectively UndeadIncestBug that she's been unwittingly doing.

Combined with the reality-altering illusory powers of her drunken self-destructive husband.

I never noticed arcane's visage in the mirror reflection from their bed before. YIKES.

It shows up before that too--when a mirror's in frame. At least once. Sadly, I was at the limit for that issue. (Believe me, in the case of that specific story, I'd post the whole damn thing if I could; it was hard choosing so I just went for the core)

They never explained where those powers came from.

Guess all dream ravens-to-be must have had them...?????

I was working in a comic store in Cincinnati when Moore took over Swampy. We immediately loved it, but we had no idea anything like this was coming. We really weren't used to being genuinely scared by a comic book.

The Moore Swamp Thing scared the living breathing fuck out of high-school-age me. And I kept going back for more. It's good to be reminded why!

...except now I have to sleep with all the lights on in case the invunche (http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Invunche_(New_Earth)) comes to get me. Oh well.

The night can make a man more brave
But not more sober . . . Burma Shave

I keep forgetting that Alan Moore never took his work as seriously as his audience.
