The Importance of Being Frank: The Punisher versus Ulik
So, I saw you guys were having a Punisher week. Seeing as I've never really owned (or read) any of Frank's ongoing titles or mini's - with exception of the War Zone issue packed in with his Marvel Legends action figure - I was wondering just what I could contribute. Duh, Marvel Knights, the 15-issue mini-series that had Daredevil reluctantly teaming with and against the Punisher. From those hallowed pages, I bring you: Frank Castle, the Punisher versus Ulik the Rock Troll.

Scans (not mine) are from issue #3 of the title, 7 out of 22. Written by Chuck Dixon, pencilled by Ed Barreto.

Fortunately, Daredevil manages to avert this certain disaster.

Wow that's... kinda bad. I'm sorry, Punisher plus Thor characters don't mix well

i don't know. A Punisher, Hogun the Grim team-up would be interesting.

Point.

And a JMS Thor/Punisher story might be cool.

Yeah, it's a little Wolverine-vs-Galactus.

There IS actually a Wolvie in Space story with Galactus. Saw the cover, never bought it.

Smart choice. I'm not sure what Erik Larsen was on when he came up with that thing, but I'm fairly sure it's not anything I'd want to try.

Trippy time for Wolvie that was. He was a Skrull then, as I recall.

Or, I should say: impersonated by a Skrull.

You know, this actually would have been really interesting if Frank did become an Einhenjar though.

Agreed. If anyone deserves a seat in Valhalla, it's Frank.

It's not the best, I do agree, but Marvel Knights had a charm to it. It featured Daredevil and Punisher choir boy bantering, Black Widow, Cloak & Dagger (although mostly just Dagger), Shang-Chi and later on Moon Knight and Luke Cage. I wish we could get a street level title like it going again.

The IDEA is interesting. But how to do it is the hard part, considering most of the cast don't DO teams....

I think they did it all right, considering they never actually became much of a team. That's actually the beauty of the title to me. A street-level version of the Defenders.

It's the versatility that is the key to Punishers success. He works so well both in the standard Marvel uni and his own grime "true crime" world.

Man, Ulik holds him up right in front of his face, and Frank doesn't take the logical eyeball or inside the mouth shots?

Frank never says die. I don't see him blinking at a mugger or Galactus.

I had no idea the Punisher had ever taken on anyone from Asgard. I actually quite enjoyed this, even though I can't for the life of me imagine how Ulik ended up in the Punishers neighbourhood! LOL! But I am quite a sucker for the 'characters from 2 different worlds clashing' type stories.

Does make me wish though that the Punisher was one of the characters in the original Marvel Ultimate Alliance game. Since Ulik (Partnering with Kurse!) was one of the bosses in that game. After seeing this, I can't help but think it would have been fun to partner up Frank with Nick Fury to take them on..

It really was a hilarious story. Dixon at some of his best banter for a DD and Punisher teamup.

Apparently some Asgardian relic had gotten lost in the neighborhood, trolls were invading looking for it. DD tracks it to some gangsters, then after pages and pages of Castle fighting, DD just walks up with the relic. I loved that Dixon just allowed it to be assumed that DD kicked the gangsters asses rather than showing it, though I was a touch disappointed that he made a deal with Ulik rather than conquer in heroic style (in return for the relic, Ulik doesn't kill Castle and leaves). I suppose it was more believable for street level heroes, though.

spent...plutonium....?

Sure, and cosmic rays.

I am so tired of the scene where the super-strong villain has the hero's neck in his grasp and something saves the good guy. News flash; by then it's much too late. No walking away from that.
