Justice Society of America #32
Four pages...

Power Girl knocks him down with super-breath.

Ladies and gentlemen, who do you think is the culprit? King Chimera? The All-American Kid? Neither? Both?

Having just realized tonight that Willingham wrote Shadowpact, I think All-American Kid is actually Kid Karnevil, and the whole mind control angle is an act he put on to throw the JSA off the trail.

The culprit is Sturges and Willingham.

Turned the gay one into an egg and killed the smartest member of the team in a forgettable way as though he were some obscure fodder nobody would care about.

Dropped.

Killed the only open ATHEIST on the team, to boot.

But I'm sure his politics didn't impact his choices at all.

Atheist and black.

All of the bad things in this title lately have happened to the gay one and the black guy.

Excuse me?

Since when is Jay Garrick skilled enough with technology to clean up a videotape? That just seems oddly out of character for him. I dunno why, it just does. o_O

That's actually one area where I'll defend Willingham, since everyone seems to forget that Jay Garrick was, from his first appearances forward, a scientist (that's how he got his powers, after all), so if any senior citizen should be able to operate a VCR ...

I also don't get how super-speed would let you clean up a tape faster... none of the equipment has motors fast enough to catch up, and even if they did you'd just end up breaking the tape. (Assuming it's literally a tape. If it's digital, you hit up against the CPU, video processing is pretty heavy.)

I wish they'd just say "magic" and stop pretending there's any science involved in superheroics. "How did you clean up the tape in like 3 seconds?" "Magic." "Oh ok."

King Chimera's actually the son of a different (very obscure) Golden Age character. Guy named 'King' Standish.

Neither.

We know the All-American Kid was controlled, and Chimera is going to be a member of that JSA spinoff.

box_in_the_box,

I've seen similar allegations in other places on the Internet, and thought I might address them here if I may.

First, JSA is currently being co-written by Bill Willingham and me. If you're going to call him a racist and a homophobe, then you're calling me one as well. Now, everyone's free to interpret the text as they like, but I want to be very clear that there was no such intent in writing the story, and I was deeply saddened to learn that some had interpreted that way.

Is Bill a conservative? You bet. But I'm not. I'm as pinko liberal as anyone you'd care to meet. Bill and I disagree about many things, but neither of us would dream of injecting racist or homophobic sentiments into a comic book. Aside from the fact that Mr. Terrific happens to be black, is there any indication that there is any racial motivation for his killing? Scanning the text, I don't find one. It never occurred to us in our wildest dreams that anyone would view it as anything other than a villain attacking a hero.

If I seem a bit strident in my response (and normally I wouldn't respond here, only because I don't want to color the discussion with my presence), it's only because being accused of racism or homophobia is something I take very, very seriously. I would never under any circumstances want to be thought to condone any kind of hateful agenda.

So let me be clear: the reason for the attack on Mr. Terrific is solely that he is the smartest member of the team, and the most tech-savvy. There was certainly no further motive on our part, I can assure you. Obsidian being turned into an egg was for a similar reason: to knock out the security system of the brownstone. No other reason (well, there is something else going on with Obsidian, but I can't say what). I can also assure you that if Mr. T stops being dead, he'll still be black and an atheist, and when Obsidian stops being an egg he'll still be gay.

I understand and applaud sensitivity toward these issues. And there are lots of real racists and homophobes out there who make no secret of their presence and their attitudes. Not in this case, however.

Thanks,

Matt Sturges

I'm going to agree with this. I might not necessarily agree with how they went out or even who went out (I say "out" because we all know in a few years they'll be back in : p) but I'm sick of writers being accused of racist or homophobic undertones every time a character with one of these traits is killed. Same with women, they're not all cases of fridging.

Well, neither box or manofbats actually accused anyone of racism or homophobia, or even mentioned those words-- they just stated some events that have happened in your comic. If saying what's happening in your comic makes it sound like someone's accusing you of racism and/or homophobia, you may want to re-examine what you've been writing . . .

ghedit because I always manage to word things in the weirdest ways

Whether or not he did it, King Chimera can take his jheri curl and his incredibly unflattering suit and gtfo. And if this artist could learn how to draw breasts at the same time, that'd be cool too.

At this point, I suspect 'neither'. While I applaud the fact that they are actually *investigating* whether All-American Kid may have committed the murder, I feel the story is trying too hard to force our suspicions on King Chimera. My gut feeling is red herrings.
