He's a dog in a cape, who's owned by a man in a cape. He's no more a 'silly, goofy concept' than Superman himself.
This is a pet peeve of mine - treating any fictional animal in anything but a naturalistic setting as if it's a children's cartoon and therefore finding a rather low level of brutality for an animal attack far more horrific than the same violence perpetrated by humans.
