Entry tags:char: flash/barry allen, char: power girl/kara zor-l/karen starr, creator: amanda conner, creator: j. michael straczynski, publisher: dc comics, title: the brave and the bold

Kryptopolitans and Barry picks up a gun for the war effort.

These are from The Brave and the Bold #28 in which Barry volunteers for an experiment and accidentally travels back in time to the Battle of the Bulge then joins the Blackhawks in their fight against the Germans.

Barry's leg is broken when he awakes after blacking out. Some Nazis spot him and fends them off by pelting bricks at them.

Barry is reluctant to help the Blackhawks kill even though it's WWII and he would be fighting Nazis and he doesn't seem to have a problem with only possibly killing them with bricks to the head at super speed. Since Barry vowed to never kill while wearing his Flash "uniform" he takes it off and puts on an American soldier's uniform to help the Blackhawks just until his leg heals.

The issue ends with Barry putting on the Flash suit, his leg healed, and returning to the present via the rift his experiment created, but not before Blackhawk says, "Go with God, son."

And now for something completely different.

That was posted on Jimmy Palmiotti's blog. It was drawn for fun at a con by Amanda.

there really are times when a superhero's "no killing" or "guns are bad" rule gets ridiculous. I don't see how bricks flying at super speed is less likely to kill someone as a gun, especially when there's so many of them. hell, none of them are even bleeding.

Even if we ignore the physics and the proper biological response to being hit in the head with a super sonic brick by way of plugging our ears and repeating "Speedforce" there is the matter of him being in WWII Europe where it is expected by society that one kills the enemy when confronted.

The superhero logic of not killing to avoid becoming judge, jury and executionor street facists doesn't really apply during wartime.

See this issue made me wonder what was up with the Blackhawks being basic soldiers. Weren't they the fighter pilot people of the DC WWII and not ground forces? Or maybe they were both and Zinda was only with the pilot groups elsewhere during this time in the war?

This was the first klunker story of the Brave and the bold I have seen. Very cookie cutter in nature. Also, wouldn't he have become a nazi slave due to the Hitler/spear of destiny spell ????

He should have, but at the same time it's possible that he didn't just travel through time, but through dimensions as well...or not. It could just be a bad story. Or it could be that DC has retconned the Spear of Destiny away this week. It seems like they rewrite things to suit whatever mood they happen to be in anyway.

Have to agree with you. I opened it up, read a page, put it on the bottom of the stack. Ended up reading it later, but was disappointed. It seemed like the standard person from the future stranded in the past story, with Barry in the place of the hapless time traveller.

In regards to the bricks, they were thrown by a Flash. They typically have great control over accuracy and speed. At worst, the soldiers received bruises and knots.

A brick to the head thrown by a normal human has a high likelihood of lethality. Those things are heavy and hard and have pointy edges, it doesn't really matter how slow you throw them. The absolute minimum speed he could lob one with and still get it to travel that distance would be quite enough to kill.
