Supergirl #46

The Conclusion of The Hunt for Reactron. While I could post the manifestation of the Flamebird. I liked this part better. What can I say, I'm a sucker for good girly friendships in comics

They're sharing sex-toys! How wonderful and intimate!

What's Reactron without something to react to, really?

The art in this is very good. Sterling Gates has really been a breath of fresh air as a writer for Supergirl. When the new Kara debuted I was excited because I loved the old (pre-Crisis) Kara but for some reason DC wanted an edgy, obnoxious, bratty (frankly unlikable) Kara and I found the early issues of the Supergirl series unreadable (even when Rucka was writing it). Now this may be my favorite Superman title (and that's saying something since I think all of them are being written well at this moment).

But you've missed a chance to joke about how Jean Grey has come back to life in the DCU!

You know what I love about the art? Kara has a reasonable cup size for her build! It makes me so happy to see a teenage girl who actually looks her age in comics :D

And man, the femslash just writes itself, doesn't it?

I love Kara/Thara.

Don't get me started on Conner/Christopher. If those boys ever interact in the DCU proper I think the Internet will explode.

Two super boys with tactile telekinesis joined together...

It's a crime that Kon and Chris haven't interacted yet. On the other hand, Kon just got back, and Super-continuity is all over the place with Blackest Night and New Krypton and all.

I didn't notice it before you're right. Thara looks like she has a larger cup size here than Kara, and even the way Lois and Lana are drawn is more "adult". Compare this to how Churchill and Benes drew Supergirl's chest or how it looks in Robinson's Don't Cry for Justice, Argentina.

There are a few teen females who usually get drawn consistently physique-wise. Stargirl comes to mind. But mostly it's rare because artists seem to forget that not every super-heroine (particularly teenagers) is supposed to look like or can look like PowerGirl

Enjoy her cup size while it lasts. If Peej is her Earth-2 duplicate, shouldn't Kara wind up looking like her when she matures?

So did I. I don't understand the fuss over her characterisation and the complaints I've heard haven't been well discussed. Most commonly she is called a slut when she only kissed two guys and went to further at all. Cry about the art all they want she wasn't written that way at all.

I liked her too. It's the cigarette, kissing, tattoo, too many weird origins that were criticized and talked about the most overshadowing the good stuff that was there.

The idea of a heroine that had the powers but no automatic need or motivation to be a hero or believe in herself as a heroine was interesting. She could have really been shown as an alien (something Clark stopped being long ago, imo). But I think she was being painted with too broad strokes, exagerated and inconsistent, which was a problem. The execution was bad but the idea had merit.

Now she is more traditionaly superheroic and more consistently written, with traditional supporting characters (unlike Boomerang) and Wonder Girl as best friend and it seems to be more in line with what everyone expected from this title.

Its the people that talk like she was smoking/drinking/having sex every issue that get to me. She had a drag of one cigarette and said she didn't like it. Is that an unteenagerly thing to do? I didn't do it put plenty around me did. The tattoo was out the blue but I think if some teen girls had no authority to tell them no they would do it too. Does this make Kara a bad character? Not at all. Does it make her a bad role model? I don't think so. It normalises her which may have been the issue for a lot of people. She isn't the aspiration but the girl you know in class.

I don't like the idea of 'traditional' supporting characters. I don't think family affiliation is that important. Boomer was a spectacular character and often got the best characterisation.

That's the thing, I think making her more like a normal teenager didn't sit well with the readers who expected that she'd be more like Clark reflecting the fact that she has 'super' in her name. Didn't want the 'normal' in their 'super' hero comics.

I think a more conflicted, trying to find herself teenager would have worked well had she been written consistenly and actually dynamicaly changing. Her road to being more superheroic could have been interesting, if written well. But then I like dynamic characters that are allowed to grow. Yet the writers looked at the criticism and the sales and kept changing things.

I agree that Boomer was great; it would be nice to see him in Kara's title again :) Perhaps some other non super (traditional) characters as well.

I half expected Jaime and Eddie to pop up and stare slack-jawed at Thara and Kara's hug.

"Can't talk. Committing image to memory."

And then Rose brings out the camcorder and rocket launcher.
