I think the most believable notion is that the bodies are just templates to piss off or horrify the people and that teh ring itself is the main power house. That would explain why they only die when the ring is destroyed, it's whats keeping them strong and alice.

Batman and Robin only beat up those BL because they allowed them to. The BL get off on the emotions of others, they like getting you really scared or really pissed off because that "flavors" the heart.

I'm starting, though, to notice the writers getting frustrated with how hard it is to destroy these things, going "fuck it, just hit them with something REALLY HARD," and ignoring the requirement with the mixed Lantern energies. Because am I supposed to believe a dog's heat vision worked here when Superman's didn't? Or making it fall? That's a bit weak and says more--much like the rather anticlimactic end of BL: BATMAN--about a need to tie that plot off too quickly. There's too much buildup in both for the rather oops-we're-out-of-time quality to the mini-conclusions.
