Icicle
One of my favourite recurring characters from JSA is Icicle (Cameron Mahkent), son of the original Icicle and member of the Injustice society. Whether Icicle is a redeemable villain (Sand seems to think so) or not is debatable, but he is definitely a character with a strong sense of loyalty, who loves teamwork. He's one of those villains who are in it for the money and the fun, and not out of craziness, and he'd probably feel right at home in Ocean's Eleven.
One problem, though, is that I'm not quite sure in what order to put his appearances. Can you help me?
First a couple of scans from "Stealing Thunder" (JSA issue 32 - 38). The Ultra-Humanite has stolen the Thunderbolt by controlling poor old Johnny Thunder and has created a dystopic alternate reality in which most superheroes are either mindcontrolled or kept in suspended animation. One of them is Sand...
As you can see, Sand already knows Icicle, so I'm thinking that this is not their first meeting. But if that's the case, what IS their first meeting?
Icicle and Sand finally get outside, where they meet Jakeem Thunder (sans Thunderbolt) who leads them to the resistance which consists entirely of heroes (and the Crimson Avenger, I'm not sure she counts as hero, what with shooting people being her thing). At first they're wary to let Icicle on the team, but he does his part and all goes well. More and more heroes get freed from the mindcontrol, and eventually the Ultra-humanite is defeated. Sand finds Ultrahumanite's brain...
As you can see, Sand has accepted Icicle as an ally by this point. In fact, he even seems to like him, because this is what he does after the Thunderbolt resets reality:
(Sidenote: Icicle's heat-prison reminds me of Magneto's plastic prison. Equally uncomfortable.)
Poor Sand. So what IS the next time they meet? I'm thinking this (from JSA Allstars #5), because Sand still hasn't given up on his determination to reform Icicle:
But Icicle doesn't get to kill Sand just yet, and Icicle doesn't reform, either. The mastermind behind this storyarc turns out to be the Wizard (William I. Zard), btw, who usually isn't very far behind when Icicle shows up.
This, I think is the latest appearance of the Icicle, in the JSA storyarc "Honor Among Thieves", which kicks off when his mentor, the Wizard, shows up to ask him for help. The whole arc is AWESOME (the Secret Society is very much a proto Secret Six) and I reccommend you get it for yourselves.
I'm looking forward to seeing Icicle and Tigress in the upcoming JSA All-Stars.
