It's a bit rich hearing this from me, of all people, but the last time I truly felt for the Scarecrow (apart from the aforementioned Milligan story) was in the comic adaptation of the DCAU...in a story where Scarecrow was a retired English teacher rather than a shrink, using devices implanted in electronic commodities to disrupt the reading ability of the populace (named the "Dyslexia Device"...a bit risque).
In the course of the story, Crane's dreams are tormented by Alan Moore/Neil Gaiman's Cain and Abel, who give him a twisted fantasy of his teaching job in which the Scarecrow mask sits on his desk and derides him. The idea of Crane as an English teacher who wants to educate people by forcing them to see how badly they've learned has great power...especially in this day and age where literature is challenged on all sides and eBooks wait in the wings to destroy the binding business...
