Adventure Comics #3

Tim is helping Conner find one of Luthor's labs.

Conner uses his tactile telekinesis to open the door, and realizes that Luthor hasn't been there in a while.

Meanwhile, Luthor tells Brainiac to drop him off in Smallville.

Speaking as someone who's not particularly a fan of Conner nor Tim--and subsequently, has had no interest in their friendship--I thought this was absolutely wonderful.

They actually sound like people, like real friends talking to one another, not just characters being put through the plot wringer of soap-opera superhero storytelling. Maybe I'm just feeling weird from the sheer amounts of green tea I've been consuming today, but dang it, I was actually moved by Tim's "I am so screwed up right now" moment.

You just don't see enough scenes like this in superhero comics, where the focus seems so much more on ANGST and ACTION rather than character moments like these.

I'm in agreement, this is very deep, intelligent character examination. The sort we should be getting in Red Robin's own title, rather than the constant angry confrontations.

I feel Conner is in the right position for a costume shake-up. Tim & Bart have both reverted to a classic look used by other characters in their heritage - why not he revert to an alternate Superboy costume? Not complaining, mind you, but the shirt and jeans must get pretty smelly if he wears them all the damn time...

Oh good, so it's not just me, then. :)

Agreed. Honestly, I was never too fond of the T-shirt and jeans look. I love utilitarian practicality in my modern superhero costumes (like Jack Knight! Or to a lesser extent, Cooke's Goggles!Catwoman) but Conner's look has always just struck me as sort of lazy. Like somebody wearing a Superman T-shirt for Halloween and saying, "I'm Superman!"

I was examining, above, how the Nightwing & Red Robin suits represented the moods and persona of the wearer, and the Jeans/T-Shirt look are basically there to represent Conner as the casual guy, the friend who you can talk to no matter what - sort of a less majestic version of the mood that Superman himself is meant to radiate (if A-SS is any indicator).

Now, Bart's new costume represents the fact that he's regained his life and his youth, and so donning a 'Kid' identity; Tim is covering his entire head and strapping belts to his chest as if to contain his intents and emotions.

Since he's on a finding-himself journey, but a more positive one, perhaps Conner should try out several new looks. What about a more scientific costume - the sort that Luthor would have designed if he himself had been Superboy instead of Clark? Or a reworking of that suit he was wearing back when he used to have a goatee and crushed on Cass Cain.

I still miss the green touches in Robin's costume, but you make a good point for what the Red Robin costume represents to the character at this point. It's kind of neat that we can actually do that with these characters and have it mean something to the character, not just be a lame marketing thing (Superman has a new logo! Instead of yellow, it's black! Like the KINGDOM COME logo, get it??).

Something that could share traits with his two Daddies would definitely be ideal for Conner at this point.

Yeah, these first 3 issues of Adventure Comics have been amazing.

Who's been writing them? Johns? And/or somebody else?

Surprisingly enough, just him, far as I know. Which is really something considering how by-the-numbers this scene isn't compared to most of his work.

Johns has been writing the main feature and co-writing the co-feature with Michael Shoemaker. Jerry Ordway is taking over art for 2 issues next :(
