Gotham Central: that one time when they shot Batman (whoops)
If I recall correctly: when the Joker was sniping people in an earlier arc, he also kidnapped a female news anchor, tied her up, and hung her upside down with a camera pointing at her with a bomb nearby. Detective Nate Patton tried to disarm the bomb. Meanwhile, Batman showed up and managed to rescue the woman, but not the detective. The ensuing explosion put Patton in a coma, and eventually his family chose to pull the plug. Nate's partner was Romy. The police department took down the signal and then instructed the officers to treat him as a hostile.

Aaaaaand if it matters, Romy does get her gun back before she gets in trouble, thanks to some diplomatic work from Robin and Stacy the receptionist.

"He hits a woman, he is not a man."

Ick. This comment makes my inner feminist go all eye-twitchy.

It presumes that she's completely his inferior. Now, she may be not as good as him at hand-to-hand combat, but that's because he's the goddammned Batman, NOT because she is a woman. She is a cop, and I'm sure when she's up against non-superheroes she is more than capable of taking care of herself. Saying "Oooh she's a woman" invalidates all the very hard work I'm sure she had to go through to get to the position she is in.

Well, doesn't being the godda** batman make everyone his inferior? This was just low. How many other methods does Batman have at his disposal where he could have gotten out of that situation without inflicting harm to anyone? He looks like he went out of his way to inflict personnel harm to that officer. No battarang to disarm her, no gas bomb to disguise his escape, nothing. Just wait till she gets closer so you can assault her and take her gun away to make her life even harder.

"Saying "Oooh she's a woman" invalidates all the very hard work I'm sure she had to go through to get to the position she is in."

Ya, i'm sure Batman cares very much about that considering how he treated her.

Then talk about how he's super competent and could have disarmed the *cop* in multiple ways. I'm perfectly fine with that. That sort of complaint still respects her as an officer and does not expect some kind of very specialized, kid glove behavior because she's female.

While I haven't been in that topic exclusively (But believe me, it bothers me just as much), I have been questioning Batman's intent on what possible outcome his actions would have had and how they would make things better. Unfortunately everyone concludes that Batman was passing judgement down on officer Romy and he just wanted to make her pay for shooting him. I make the point that Batman really has no right to pass judgement on these officers because they are the ones who really put their lives on the line for Gotham because many of them have already died in the line of duty. And as a good Bruce Wayne once said, they did it without wearing a mask. I also don't like how Batman would go out of his way to ensure that his villains won't get killed (despite the fact they will always escape and kill again), yet he'll use brute force against officers of the law and steal their belongings because they 'irritated' him.
