Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:char: daredevil/matt murdock, char: kingpin/wilson fisk, char: lady bullseye/maki matsumoto, char: master izo, char: turk barrett, char: venus, creator: andy diggle, creator: carlo pagulayan, creator: jeff parker, creator: roberto de la torre, group: agents of atlas, group: x-men, title: daredevil

From very opposite ends of the genre spectrum.

Four scans apiece from Daredevil #501, the first proper issue of Andy Diggle's run on the title, and from X-Men vs. Agents of Atlas #1; obviously something of a stylistic difference.

First, over in the grimy side of town, Turk is called in to meet with the Kingpin, who remarks that when he first returned last arc he said Turk would be his lieutenant until a more suitable person was evident.  That time has come at last.  Also, he knows that Turk screwed up in #500 and gave Daredevil the information he needed to crash the Hand ceremony.

A cunning plan indeed.  Though it relies on Turk going around boasting that the Kingpin is a wuss for not having his throat cut, which is the sort of tempting fate you'd only do if you were an idio...oh, yeah, good plan.

Daredevil's initiation into the Hand requires a sacrifice, and the Hand wants Master Izo.  Daredevil has a bunch of ninjas and Black Tarantula jump him and drag him off.  Then the two of them get into a shouting match about necessary sacrifices, etc.

"...Lord Daredevil."

One tends to doubt that this isn't some elaborate plan by the group to fool the Hand.  If not, harsh (sort of reminds me of the penultimate episode of Angel).

Over in sunny San Francisco, the Agents raid X-HQ to steal Cerebra, because Venus is missing and they can't find her with their own technology.  Jimmy remarks that...

Back in San Francisco, the Agents narrowly get away with Cerebra, thanks to the X-Men's skirmish group not having a telepath with it, allowing the Uranian to disrupt everybody (Colossus is throttling everyone until Bob makes him think he just snapped Shadowcat's neck, for example).

Kurt, man, go back to red-and-black; it looks way better.  As an aside, his stock has seriously depreciated lately; there are now four teleporters attached to the overall X-Men (him, Pixie, Illyana, now Cloak), and he's got the least range and least capacity of any of them.

I really wish Pagulayan was drawing UXM instead of Land.

Ok, how is Lady Bullseye's costume supposed to work ? Is it body paint ? Body stocking ?

What happened to Dagger's flatchested dancers body ?

It's a black and white bodysuit; she wears black and white facepaint as well, and so far it's kind of variable whether artists clearly demarcate the collar. De La Torre, based on the black stripe on her neck, is drawing it as a high collar (or else, not really thinking about it).

*sigh* Yeah, because his stock was SO high to begin with. I wish Marvel would quit paying lipservice to his fans while figuring out new ways to treat him like shit. Just put him in limbo or kill him off, already.

He used to have a clear role to fill, though; he was the teleporter guy.

On the other hand, he remains Kurt Motherfuckin' Wagner.

No, he doesn't. These days, all he is is whiny or sanctimonious or both, thanks to over a decade of non-stop hackery from his writers. There's no swashbuckling, no cheer, no inner life, no depth, no story, no purpose, nothing but a blue guy with a tail who keeps getting his ass kicked. Fraction had the fucking nerve to say he had shown Kurt as a "moral beacon" in a storyline where he BARELY APPEARED. That's how deluded he is. It's extra frustrating when you see great characterization and storylines go on in pretty much EVERY OTHER TITLE but the one they insist Kurt must be solely confined to.
Kurt Motherfucking Wagner died ages ago.

Also, I can't stress this enough: Black Tarantula used to run the Hand's Sworn Enemies. There was a centuries-long feud and everything! Sure, Stan Lee may now own the trademark on their name (the True Believers - it was a religious difference), but it should still be at least acknowledged!

I thought they were just his allies? IIRC, they were working together with Rose, BT's competition.

Though the current BT in no way resembles the old one, sigh...

And totally agreed about Pagulayan (he should also replace Dodson)

Well, what did Master Izo really expect? Didn't he act behind the scenes to get DD in control of the Hand? His attitude here and in the preview just strikes me as odd.

Oh come on. They violate reality with that many ninjas overcoming the single old ninja! That's how you know it's a put-on!

Clearly, Matt and Izo worked out ahead of time that Matt would piss and moan, Izo would be unhelpful and Matt would say sorry that RIGHTEOUSNESS demands his sacrifice, but it's all for the best..The Hand's history is full of people claiming that they'd infiltrate them and destroy them with Justice. They're EXPECTING THIS. Izo knows them well enough to know this, and so does Matt from Elektra.

Izo is a nearly immortal martial artist; stopping his heart and breathing so he can fake being dead is nothing. The Hand sees what they expect to. They don't really know Matt, how stubborn he is and how devious.

I am loving this X-men/Agents crossover. Both teams are so unique and should stick on the West Coast to have further adventures like this.

I can't wait to see Aphrodite. I have never seen her in the Marvel U, which is so wrong since Ares and others of that pantheon have been shown excessively. The books all need a little more love than war right now.

I am loving the writing and art on this. I would love to see them takeover on Uncanny, too help Terry Dodson out. That man can't be the only good thing on the flagship title.

I kind of like the X-team shown there. It's a really interesting mix of the first, second, middle, and current ages. 4 originals, 4 from the Giant Sized X-men group, a New Mutant, a 90's X-woman, some of the Young X-men, Emma, and Cloak and Dagger. (I kind of like them as X-folk).

More than four teleporters. Vanisher is on X-Force. And Ariel had temporary X-men membership during the Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-men crossover.

And 616 Blink is a member of Selene's inner circle, if they redeem her at the end of Necrosha she'd make 7.

Oh, and as an afficiando of the concept, if not the gender involved, that's categorically NOT how you tie up someone who has vocal powers you want to neutralise. You tie their hands BEHIND their back so they can't just reach up and pull the gag off, as there's absolutely no reason Venus couldn't do here.

True, but two of the other three run the risk of their passengers being eaten by creatures/forces in their medium of transport. And Pixie has to yell out a multi-syllabic incantation before each use of her power-that can't work smoothly more than a couple of times in a given fight before someone realizes it might be a good idea to clock her as soon as she starts chanting.
