Huntress is Awesome Week: Huntress Joins the JLA
Someone posted a line here once about Huntress that cracked me up (please claim it if it's yours) "She's so crazy, she's Batman's Batman." Crazy Huntress is an image that's she had (and at times deserved) and still has for those not overly familiar with the character. (i.e. BFTC "The Network") Here's a look at a time in the early part of Helena's career showing just how awesome, competent and uncrazy she could be. From the September 1999 issue of Justice League of America are 7 pages telling how she joined the JLA.

Some nimrod from New Jersey has stolen Barda's megarod and is going to NYC to cause havoc. Scott tries to warn him that rod is powerful, can only be used by those with training. The nimrod calls Mr. Miracle "a freaking wimp" and rides a boom tube to the city (which is, if you think about it, a much better way to go, then say, by the subway or driving though the tunnel.)

Other members of the JLA are called in. Well, really just Bea.

Wouldn't it be cool to see Bea and Helena working together again?

Helena/Huntress is indeed awesome. She has saved the Bronx and the rest of NYC and she's saved Barda and Bea. Mr. Miracle goes to see Max Lord to recommend her for the league telling him that Helena "took charge of the situation and had everything under control before I knew it. A couple of months' experience and she'd give Batman a run for his money."

Wow, that's quite a statement. And poor Helena will spend the next 15 years just trying to get a "good job" from Bats.

Oh, she looks so cute and happy and hopeful there. I wish we could get more of that :(
Edited to add:(but without the mind control or in the case of when she was joining the Birds, Babs manipulation)

Poor Bea has had some awfully bad hair days. Looks someone switched her shampoo with Scotts Miracle-Gro Turf Builder with Weed Control. Heh, double entendre intended.

On Earth 616, there are more meta heroes in Manhattan than there are cab drivers. It's nice that NYC of New Earth at least got a visit from the cape community now and then.

"King of the Bronx", heh. Come on, gotta at least go for "King of the Tri-State Area". XD

Wow. She sneakily blew the guy's head off then smiled all evil and sexy about it.

"and rides a boom tube to the city (which is, if you think about it, a much better way to go, then say, by the subway or driving though the tunnel.)"

Except for the time when Barda and Scott used her megarod to transport their car into NYC and end up straight in the middle of NYC traffic. A couple of cars almost ran into them, which would have been bad because they're usually lacking insurance. Plus Oberon could have died.

Always need to use caution when riding the Mega-Rod.

Here, let me mind-control you into joining my super-team... is it me, or is that creepy?

Mind swiping, mind controlling it's all part of the JLA way!

Vaulting over those bricks the crotch of Helena's outfit looks like it's totally not covering her adequately. I know it's only one panel but it's really distracting! It's why these bare-legged costumes always make me feel uncomfortable just looking at them.

Aww, brown eyes. I miss that.

But, really, Hel, Max being a creepy fuck aside, you could do worse than hang out with these guys. I mean, look, Bea didn't even ride your ass about that guy blowing his own head off (I like how it's not entirely clear whether she meant to do that, or is just reveling in the happy accident).

I don't think there's anyway she could have meant for it to happen. THere's no way to guarentee he'd be triggering it just as she shot him, which way it would point when it landed. She could certainly be hoping it would happen but if she was actually planning on it happening or even trying to make it happen she's a little to confident in her abilities.

On a purely logical basis I agree with you, but this is comics, where people (specifically, Batman, who is intrinsically a point of comparison with Huntress) are allowed to be Just That Good. That is to say, if that were a mistake, despite it being completely incomprehensibly impossible to predict or anticipate, Batman nevertheless would never have made it. And if it's possible to avoid, it's possible to do on purpose (at least, by his thematic foil, it could be).

Although I do think Huntress is pretty awesome here, I don't really like her offing that mook. I wouldn't mind if it was say, someone like the Joker but from what I see from these scans he is just a harmless criminal who is better off in jail than get his head blown off and die a horrible death.

That's fair given what you can see in the scans. But in the story he's killed 12 police officers and numerous civilians.

Even then he is still no Joker and redemption is a possibility for him unlike Mr J. He doesn't have 15 long years of killing people for lulz and ruining the lives of hundreds of people. The man above is merely 'crazy with power' or he could have been on drugs, he could have been manipulated/mind controlled/body possessed, etc.

Fuck that noise. You play with fire, you praise Darkseid while slaughtering innocents, you deserve every head-disintegrating backfire from your stolen weapon you get.

For pickiness's sake, I must note that she doesn't actually kill him. She shoots him in the arm, which causes him to drop the megarod, which fries him. Even though she seems pretty happy about his death, I don't know if we can accuse her of purposely killing the poor guy, since her shot was not intended to be fatal.

It could go either way, I suppose.

I'm not generally in favor of any story that has someone stealing something of Barda's in which Barda herself doesn't end up punching the guy in the dick and sending his teeth into orbit. And the cosmic rod goes off accidentally when someone drops it? That doesn't seem right. Also, a few too many shots of the gals with their legs akimbo.

Okay, so has Helena ever joined a team without being manipulated into it? And it's hard to believe this is from '99, the art makes it look older (is it Giffen? it's a lot better than most of the stuff i've seen of his, but all of that was ten years older). What's the issue number?

Also, I think the "Batman's Batman" line was [info]richardak, who tried to start the Huntress Is Awesome week back in June. Haven't seen him in a while.
