This isn't all that new, actually; it's from the Italian Mickey Mouse comic magazine Topolino and was published in Italian a couple of years ago. (It was published in Norwegian last year, so I've actually read it!)
Aside from wizardry, there's not very much to tie this to The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
The basic story revolves around a wizard tournament where the goal is to gather all the fragments of an uber-powerful magic crystal that was shattered some time ago. The fragments still have some power -- you can see Mickey holding one of them in the preview pic here (that particular fragment can control the weather, and he's trying to make it rain).
To compete in the tournament, Mickey gets together with Donald and Goofy, who in this series are also wizard apprentices, but each have some performance issues: Goofy (who's just a wizard because it's an old family profession) just isn't very interested in magic and instead spends most of his time and energy on finding other things to do, and Donald has huge problems with timing -- it's not that his magic doesn't work, it's just that it works too late, the desired reaction usually not showing up until long after it was needed.
It's a pretty fun story, in that certain "Italian Disney comics" way.
