When Hans von Hammer met Booster Gold
so Booster Gold's been being rubberbanded around time by a knife that can open holes in time.

All part of a day's work when you're a protector of time, right?

and running into people who are ironically related in some way to your life.

like infantryman Cyrus Lord, direct ancestor of Maxwell Lord.

Booster only finds that out at the end, though, and when he does, it's a real " .. time, you are a BITCH " moment.

for now, he's trying to find his time knife and get out without Cyrus asking too many question about this gaudy stranger who's shown up on a death-strewn WWI battlefield.

objectives not made easier by sudden gunfire overhead:

" Hans von Hammer! Best pilot who ever lived! A killing machine with wings! Run! "

why, yes, this WAS one of those Faces of Evil things, as the cover will show you:

so either Hans is up there with Parasite and Prometheus on the bad guys level (well, he ain't called the ENEMY Ace for nothing, and some of his actions would bear it out) or the real Face of Evil is... war, I guess.

whatevs.

anyhow, Booster decides to save these pilots from von Hammer's guns, because he's a hero, and he can't stand by and watch someone die.

but how to it without showing off any of his strange fancy tech?

except that's not the sun, those're chronal portals triggered by the time knife being in the immediate area.

meaning that Booster is stunned, but recovers:

... not in time enough, alas.

Hans takes them back to the castle him and his squadron are currently holed up at, trading " You'll be a legend someday " type of conversation 'long the way:

Booster's just found the plot device, a relic of the castle's owners. Oh, time knives. You turn up in the strangest places.

The interrogators set to work on Cyrus and Booster; when one of them sticks a bayonet in Cyrus's injured arm, however, Booster is driven to attack them, even without a powered suit.

He does well for a bit, but then one of them draws a bead on Booster with his mauser.

However, enter Hans again:

' experimental flight suit '... after the people he's fought against, Hans isn't fazed by any costuming choice anymore.

... too bad we didn't get von Hammer dogfighting Booster in the air.

ah well, would've been like some cracked up Secret Weapons over Normandy shit, anyway.

anyhow, we've got a few more pages to wrap shit up, so:

why did he pick the magic time knife?

because fate works that way, I guess.

anyhow, Booster hies Cyrus to a hospital, picks up on " oooh, Cyrus LORD ", and then is rubberbanded further through time.

... man, time travellers meet the weirdest people, don't they?

bonus: Deadman Wonderland, showing us how a dream can go from normal to HOLY JESUS GOD AIEEEEEE in 0.02 seconds...

Pretty good read, this is.

If nothing else, it proves that fictional privately owned prisons can easily become gateways to WHAT THE FUCK

But if you have to put a face on war, that's a pretty good drawing of Hammer to use. That is a face of war: the determination to kill your foe, even if you do not survive it.

On WAR, yes, but I don't think that's what's going on here. From what little I remember of the 'Faces of Evil' thing, all the other covers had characters like Darkseid or the Joker or Dr. Polaris on them. It wasn't meant to represent all the various facets of evil, such as war, cruelty, genocide, etc., which would have been fairly interesting; it was meant literally - 'THESE people are EVIL, and here are their faces on the covers.'

To my understanding it was editorial mandated, originally Booster was going to meet up with Sgt. Rock in World War II, but they wanted a tie in with Faces of evil.
