First Appearance of the Mad Hatter (and Vicki Vale!), Batman #49 (1948)
Welcome back to my series of posts on my favorite Bat-villain, the Mad Hatter. Previously, I posted scans from a story featuring "the other Mad Hatter", a mustachioed maniac who was retconned to be an impostor playing at being the macrocephalic menace we've come to know. But now, let's go back to the Golden Age to see the origin of the "real" Jervis Tetch. I was surprised to learn that this story not only introduced the Hatter, but also Bruce Wayne's long-time Lois Lane ripoff lady friend Vicki Vale as well.

Like a lot of Golden Age villains, there wasn't a whole lot to the Hatter. He was really just the Penguin without the umbrellas at this point, and the story focuses more on Ms. Vale.

Lawl, pop culture references.

Also, note that Batman carries around a cat to throw at people.

Oh Bruce, you tricky little minx.

Coming soon, the modern incarnation of the Mad Hatter - same Hat-time, same Hat-channel!

Okay, since this is an old comic, I'm not entirely clear on how long the issue is and thus how much 1/3rd of the issue is. However, please realize that we have new rules and you're in blatant violation of the posting guidelines several times over (this is exactly why I told everyone in my mod post to go read them no matter how many times they'd posted to the comm(s) before, oh dear). At the very least, you need to trim down your preview image down to spec; editing your subject to include image number and other pertinent info and adding tags would also be great.

You've got six hours from timestamp of this comment to make any edits. Thanks!

Oh, and please edit your other post as well, but I'll give you a bit of extra time for that.

Ah, I see. This comic was about 40 pages long not including ads, so this post squeaks through, but I'll resize the top image and edit the other post ASAP. Thanks for the note.

So am I the first user to get a mod warning or what?

Nope, that wasn't a mod warning, more of a reminder to get your posts rules-compliant. When you get an Official Warning (tm), we will be sure you know that you did, and exactly why.

I always thought the Mad Hatter would make a more interesting villain if, instead of basing his entire persona off of the short Alice novels, he switched it up with various famous literary characters. It would have given him a lot more freedom over the years.
But that's just me.
Also, SIGH at Vicky Vale. Back when someone thought Bats needed a Lois. I'm glad that didn't really stick.

Ah, but she is surely more interesting than Lois. Observe.

Comics need more glove fetishists.
