	My FF4 history is somewhat iffy but pretty certain it was during John Byrne's run, when she went from Invisible Girl to Invisible Woman after going through a bunch of emotional torture and it was discovered that she was the strongest of the FF due to the force fields. Way before that. Back in the early Lee-Kirby years, issue 22 or 23, somewhere around there. Reed is testing her because he suspects her invisibility actually creates a force field she could learn to use. Sure enough, when Ben tries to spray Johnny with fire extinguisher foam, Sue instinctively protects herself with an invisible field.

As she experiments with it, watching Ben bounce off it and Johnny take a few minutes to burn through it, Reed says something like, "Sue, you always worried that you didn't contribute enough to the team but now I have a hunch you're about to become our star player."

The Invisible Girl to Invisible Woman change did come about much later. In the 1960s and early 70s, grown women often referred to themselves as girls. (They still do in day to day speech, of course, but not in a professional capacity). Comics were quite a bit behind with that.

	Byrne also had Sue do an interesting "make the invisible visible" bit with her powers during the Galactus/Terrax story. Sue making the invisible spectrum of light visible must be handy sometimes. (Not often, though.) (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Lee and Kirby did that in the same story where Sue discovered her new powers. She used her energy to reveal a door that the Mole Man had made invisible (Heaven knows how). Byrne expanded on this, but that was his plan from the start.

There was a twist that was quickly dropped. When Sue made another person or object invisible, she herself had to become visible. She could only affect one thing at a time. Still, when a villain is running away with the loot, and you make the lamppost in front of him invisible, it can be effective.

	Ah, your icon comes from perhaps my favorite of the Wieringo run on FF. Though I'm still mystified by exactly how getting swept away by a tidal wave can divest one of both pants and underwear that have to be pulled down and a sweater that has to be pulled up in the same motion. 	Is anyone else thinking of the scene in the FF movie where Susan's invisibility is flickering on and off, and in order to use it, she has to strip down, so she starts stripping while she's invisible, but halfway through - EEK! She's in her lingerie in front of a crowd! The second panel kinda reminded me of that. (Reply to this) (Thread)
