And no, of course I'm not saying that using intimidation doesn't make you a proper martial artist. I'm simply saying that intimidation, in and of itself, has nothing to do with martial arts - no one teaches you 'looming menacingly and using a scary voice' in karate class. Actually I think you picked the wrong discipline here. Karate is all about intimidating the opponent and basically doing anything you can to avoid a fight.
And technically lots the weapons used in Japanese martial arts come from everyday use see: nunchaku, kama, kusarigama, etc... Also I'm not an expert, but I'm sure it could be argued that many weapons used in Chinese style martial arts have the same origin. So technically as the dictionary says, martial arts are fighting styles that have originated in Asia. Period.
Cap practices Judo? he's a martial artist. Bats does a patchwork of several styles at once? He's a martial artist as well.
