Soda with caffeine in it for the same reason coffee and black tea, but also for the sugar.

Basically, there's an "everything in moderation" approach to Mormonism and diet--which is ironic, since whenever Mormons have a get-together, we always bring WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much food.

I think that's more or less a universal human trait.
Incidentally, sorry, man - didn't realize you were a Mormon. Hope it didn't sound like I was mocking your religion or anything - I'm just (more than) a little leery about monotheism in general, which can make me a little hasty with my statements at times.

Please. I'm used to it.

And Mormon too-much food at get-togethers are actually the basis of nearly half of Mormon inside jokes (the other half being about our perennial failure to be on time, to the point that one joke is the punchline for the other).

I mean, if you can't laugh at yourself, laughing at others is just mean.

Well, no one I know is a Mormon, and at all the get-togethers I've ever attended that involve food, there are invariably large amounts of leftovers, and it is extremely rare that anyone's on time. They're universal human traits, I tell ya.
Still, you're right, one should always try and find the humor in oneself first - and goodness knows there are things in my neck of the woods to joke about which no doubt ARE more-or-less us-specific.
