Dick shows Tim the ropes...
No, not THOSE ropes silly... Though that IS a pleasing mental image! :)

And with Dick managing to be menacing whilst wearing the Disco!Wing suit, we now move into the story proper

And as is so often the case with these things

This happens not long after "A Lonely Place of Dying" which introduced Tim, and before he got his own costume, he was still very much a rookie, whereas Dick is still the idol of millions...

"Yeah kid, that little program ought to last us until lunchtime, what are we going to do this afternoon?"

I'm not even going to comment on the slashiness of some of the following, because it's late here, and I want to make it to bed before 3am, it would take that long to highlight it all, besides this is scans_daily, you don't need MY help for slash....

Dick wandering around half dressed would be TERRIBLY distracting, then I remember that that's actually MORE material than he used to wear as Robin, even counting the cape!

And I like Dick revelling in the chaos of his apartment.

I'm not sure the water you pour INTO the coffeemake before it's filtered should BE that colour, but this IS New York...

And thus begins the unbearable brotherliness of Robins....

This is a great scene next...

Must not comment on subtext... promised...

Now, see what you can do with Dick's challenge on this page, WITHOUT re-reading anything above this line.

Awwww... poor nervous wreck Timmy...

So what else are they going to do? Dick is going to dress up like a longshoreman and hang around with underage kids under streetlights in an unpleasant part of town.

and hold him tight...

Anyway, I can't show you any more as it would go above the page limit, but it does involve Dick kicking ass, Raven going berzerk and zapping Tim to beddie-byes and other shenanigans... but I did like this early interaction between the two, the starstruck Tim Drake, and Dick hoping to maybe be a better big brother to THIS Robin than the last one....

Yay! I love love love this story. That whole training session at the park is like the essence of Robin to me, with the anticipating orders but not presuming etc. It's really hard being Robin!

[Dick/Tim], I want you to move like some well-oiled gear, so we mesh perfectly, one smoothly working with the other instead of creating friction.

move like some well-oiled...

friction.

...emphasis on friction.

Friction was an innocent word to me an hour ago, but... this only counts as subtext if it's subtle, right?

(And Tim is suddenly much more likeable now that he's already got the job as Robin.)

Damnation, Bruce used to talk to teenage Dick about being "well-oiled"? Yowza!

So here's where Dick's my-life-is-so-orderly-I-need-my-room-to-be-chaotic interior design philosophy is presented.

I think I saw these scans before in S_D. Maybe in S_D 1.0?

Question: I could swear there was a time that Tim said didn't plan to become Batman when he got older, but was thinking of joining the CIA or something. Anyone know when that was, or am I imagining panels from my past?

And now I want fic where Tim joins the CIA instead of running off half-cocked in Doctor Mid-Nite costume. SOMEBODY WRITE THIS!

I second this. I like the idea that Tim wants to use his crime fighting skills in "real life." It just seems a little more grounded. I mean, you do see teen superheros and sidekicks going to school and college all the time, and really, why? They all seem to end up as full-timers anyway, only resorting to civilian identity around fellow former teens. But Tim? He was going to go out there and make a difference from inside, and be totally awesome!

Le Sigh.

I think it's in Nightwing 25, when he tells Dick "You reinvented yourself to become Nightwing. You wanted to be a hero, I'm happy just to be Robin"

Tim originally envisaged that he'd stop being Robin when he could no longer serve as the "light" balance to Batman's "dark".

I thought I had jus about every single book featuring Tim Drake. So WHY didn't I even know this gloriouness existed before.

Well-oiled machine...friction?!

I am laughing like a hyena.

Dick ruffling Tim's hair for the first time! ♥ I think Dick has a fixation with Tim's hair. He's always noogieing it and ruffling it and kissing it. I approve!

That's because Tim has only at most one Robin bang. Not sure if Dick's trying to ruffle the other bang into being or to make the first disappear, but there you go.

Tim was originally designed with the classic Robin bangs (I have one of the original art pages of "A Lonely Place of Dying", and you can see the original hair style under the pasted-on modification which gave him the single downward pointing strand.

Awesome. It's great how Dick is both the loing big brother and strict when he teaches Tim.

"So did Jason. Only he never learned better."
And you obviously know this because you spent so much time with Jason while he was alive, Dick. Oh no, wait, you didn't.

Dear Tim: would you also like a black puffy jacket to put over your red one, or do you think you can go the rest of your being a nervous wreck without without following that tradition as well?

It's so nostalgic to see Tim get the last name treatment.

Went back and hunted up the book in question. The presence of Tim Drake in a New Titans story really jarred me and put the timeline into greater perspective.

Just think - only six years ago from current events, Arsenal was still Speedy, Donna was married to Terry Long and Deathstroke was not a complete sociopathic demi-god nutbar who could take on the entire Justice League. And Tim was greener at the superhero business than Gar. XD

I can't believe I've never noticed that... Seriously. Kudos! (Such is the power of Dick Grayson's convictions!)

Or you can put it down to the Doppler shift from recalling it several hours in the future, when the light will be seven light-hours away! ;)

Nice story. I've always liked it. And nice to see the Bat philosophy--so zen like, it is, too! Also good example of how Bats choose to go after the top-level criminals versus low-level ones.
