Nightwing and Batman

I read through a good chunk of the nightwing series recently and really enjoyed it. When Dick first came to Bludhaven, he was determined to be his own man. (Heh, I love his pouty face on the last panel)

But Dick obviously still wants some of daddy's approval

See Bruce, that wasn't so hard was it?

Though I honestly don't like Dick's sometimes almost desperate need for Bruce's approval and validation when Chuck Dixon was writing him, especially since he'd been operating as leader of the Teen Titans for YEARS by this point. But then again, they had turn up the dickishness of Batman to 11 by this point, so this, dperessingly, WAS a surprising thing for him to say.

I was under the impression that he was still a bit bitter over the fact that Bruce had chosen Azrael over him during 'Knightfall'. It wasn't so much that he was still attached to Bruce's apron strings, it was that he'd been under the impression that he and Bruce had a 'we'll be there for each other if needed' relationship, and having Bruce choose a relative stranger over him was a low blow. More specifically, he felt like Bruce had been saying that he wasn't reliable enough to fill in for him, which is why he was on an 'I'm gonna PROVE I'm good enough! Doin' this MY way!' kick in the first scan. With all that whirring around in his head, it's not surprising that a bit of parental validation came as a nice surprise.

Aweee, gotta love DIck's face in that last panel. Even Bruce is smiling just a teeny-weenie bit.

It's like Dick just received his favourite cookie! Come to think of it, so might've Batman.

His seat is like that chair built by George Clooney in Burn After Reading...except voice-activated by Bruce.

To me, this is the first time I ever saw Dixon write Batman positively as in 'not a Bat-dick'.

Those expressions are just a bag o' fun, aren't they? It's like he's trying to frown his face right off in that first page, and the "Daddy said I did good!" look just radiates happiness right off the page. Loving that.

Was all the Bludhaven stuff as good as this and the Cass stuff I've seen?

the vast majority of Dick's time in Bludhaven was really quite good - I would definitely recommend reading it

Though the character beats are great, just be prepared for a singular lack of interesting villains or progress of the overall plot. Blockbusters lame rent-a-badguys should never have been remotely a challenge to Dick. And yet they kept coming back, and back, and Dick's progress in taking Blockbuster down was slower than molasses.

"Who says that Bruce is always a dick? "

Me. He's won't let Dick drive. :P

Bruce is a dick? No, Dick's the other one. :P

That said: This, and the "I don't mind the company" scene with Spoiler, are what Bruce should be like IMO. I'd like to see a version of the Bat-Family where everyone is emotionally and not just tactically supportive of each other (if nothing else Bruce should really realize that you can't tease the two apart). You know, emphasizing the "family" part of it.

In fact, it would be amazing if "Brave and the Bold" took this route.
