AUDREY COLDWATER-QUINN ✦ QUENTIN COLDWATER ✦ ALICE QUINN (BRIEFLY)
Quentin picks up their daughter from intake. It's hilarious. PG Complete. |
Audrey knew the norm in Atlantis leaned towards the strange. She'd spent her whole life on the island, and she'd had her own share of weird experiences. But arriving in the past, where her parents were closer to her own age, where her parents had probably not even had her yet, was a completely different level of weird. Back at home, she'd been in the middle of studying for her physics final. Now, here she was, surrounded by a whole bunch of strangers, all of whom had supposedly been 'wished' here for the holidays. "Dad?" she said, seeing a familiar face. Quentin had been surprised to see the name on the notifications and even more surprised to see her on the network. There had been people arriving out of nowhere for a few days now but he hadn’t expected to see anyone and certainly not his own child. A child that he had had with Alice. He had no idea exactly what the state of things with Alice was right now. They were civil to each other which was good but he wasn’t sure he’d say they were friends. Or maybe he might say it but she wouldn’t. Either way, he just tried to keep things at an even keel and try not to rock the boat. This was definitely going to rock the boat. “Hi,” he said, feeling a little bit shy as he stood there. One look at her was all it took to know that this was his and Alice’s daughter. She looked more like Alice he thought but he could see himself too. “It feels strange being called Dad. I never even really thought about that, having kids I mean. I mean I wanted to but well…….okay…..so here you are.” he gave a nervous laugh. "Well, surprise?" she said, throwing her hands in the air. She smiled brightly. "I'm your one -- and possibly only? -- child. Don't worry. I won't ruin the future for you." Audrey didn't normally do awkward, but she felt a little uncertain being here. Why had she been brought here, if they didn't even know she existed? She'd have to figure that out later, she supposed. It wasn't like Atlantis ever explained its weird behavior. "Is mom here? I mean, I know she's on the island somewhere, but…I just thought she'd be with you, or maybe...close by?" Well that was definitely Alice’s personality coming through and his too if he were being honest. “I’m not sure exactly where she is, intake contacted me, they were looking for her I think but they couldn’t reach her. We work in magical research so sometimes we’re in places where normal communication devices don’t function.” Quentin had no idea what to do with her other than take her some place that wasn’t intake. “Did they give you a place to stay? I overheard someone mention a hotel that had popped up out of nowhere so that must be it? I guess I should explain that your mother and I….” he paused for a moment and ran a hand through his hair trying to figure out how to put this. Audrey no doubt knew the story of his and Alice’s relationship or at least some of it so this probably wouldn’t be a surprise. “We’re not together right now. Here I mean. We’re both here but we’re not a couple, we’re broken up but we still see each other a lot. So we live in two different houses so they probably put you in the hotel.” "Huh," said Audrey, eyeing her father, "well, this is a surprise. I guess one parent's better than none?" She knew her parents had had a rocky start, but she'd never expected to wake up in the middle of their...thing. She decided to let that go for now. She wasn't here to play matchmaker. She shoved her hands into her jacket pockets and looked around the intake area. It was probably about time that they headed out. "So, hotel, mom, or… something else first? You pick. I figure I've already turned your world upside down for today." “Let’s go and get you settled and I’ll try and call Alice again,” he said as they headed for the door. “Damn, it looks like a lot of people showed up today. I wonder if this is related to Christmas or something?” It wouldn’t surprise him since Atlantis had a way of trying to keep them on their toes and apparently telling them things they didn’t know. Like a child, a grown up child. Maybe this was good though, he thought. Maybe it meant that he and Alice finally worked things out and managed to have a functional relationship. That would be nice. "It's just like Atlantis to do something like this for the holidays," she agreed as she walked with him. "I've lived here my whole life, but it seems like the island can always come up with something new. We've had it pretty good though." She meant what she had said earlier. She , didn't want to ruin the future for him, but she also knew he was bound to figure out some parts of it. "How long have you been here now? You and mom?" As she talked, she observed the island around them. She was curious about what had (and had not) changed since her own time. “I’ve been here since the week before Halloween,” he said. “Alic….your mother got here a little bit before me. I was the last one to get here and I caught hell about that. I guess you know Julia, Eliot, Margo, Kady and Penny in your time? Marina’s here too but we don’t talk much so I don’t know if she’s even around in your world.” He really didn’t have a lot to say to the woman who’d constructed a mental hospital in his mind and trapped him there. He’d forgiven Julia for her part in it although it had taken a while but he wasn’t sure he could ever completely forgive Marina. But who knew. He wouldn’t have thought he’d have a daughter with Alice either. "So, you're still really, really new to everything here? Wow. And yep." She ticked off the family members mentally in her head. "Aunt Julia, Uncle Eliot, Aunt Margo, Aunt Kady, Uncle Penny, and even Aunt Marina. She's not as bad as she used to be, or so I've heard. I don't know much about her from before, but I can guess… Then, there's all the extended family and cousins. It's hard to keep track of everyone." She frowned slightly. "I'm sorry. This must be completely overwhelming, especially when you're not… well, you haven't been here long is all. Atlantis is crazy sometimes, isn't it?" That was an understatement. His mind flashed back to Halloween and he hoped that his daughter wasn’t psychic. Neither he nor Alice was but magic did its own thing and wasn’t necessarily hereditary but you never knew. Either way, he hoped she didn’t see his mind hit on an image of having sex in a flying pumpkin with Alice. “Yes, Atlantis is very weird. Some people swapped bodies with their pets a few weeks ago. I was a button on someone’s shirt for a day. I’m still getting used to it all. And now here you are. I’m glad to see you…..just surprised.” Quentin was actually happier than he wanted to admit since Audrey’s presence meant that he and Alice worked things out in the future. Which was what he wanted but he wasn’t going to ask how that had happened. Time travel could be tricky when you changed the future. Audrey was hardly psychic, just far better at people than either of her parents were. It came with being the least awkward one in the family. "Oh, I get it. This has just...always been the norm for me. When I was younger, I desperately wanted to be able to go somewhere else...Brakebills, Hogwarts, I don't know. But I'm also really, really glad I got to grow up on a mystical island? I mean, how many people get to say they are from Atlantis?" She looked at her dad, aware she'd gone on a bit of a ramble. "I'm just saying. It could be much, much worse." He wouldn’t argue with that. “I think we all wish we were somewhere else when we’re young. For me it was Fillory but you know all that.” It was hard to comprehend that she knew all about his life…..and Alice’s life including things that had not happened yet. “To be honest, I don’t mind it here. It’s weird but I’m used to weird and growing up here certainly prepared you for just about anything I bet.” The phone call from Quentin had been met with a little roll of the eyes, but Alice had picked up regardless. The conversation felt weird and he had been vague in regards to her questions about what was going on. Sighing, she agreed to meet him in a predetermined location and when she arrived there she wasn’t expecting the young woman. She glanced between the two of them, “Who’s your new friend?” she asked. Audrey knew what her dad meant. Being in Atlantis had prepared her for the weird and unexpected. Well, maybe not all the weird and unexpected. Seeing her mom at this age definitely fell in that category. "Mom?" Quentin should have explained things in more detail on the phone but he hadn’t known what to say. He could only imagine what Alice was thinking right now about this young woman who was about their own age. “This is Audrey,” he said. “Our daughter. From the future.” Considering everything Alice had been through this should have come easily, or at least a little less shocking than it felt. However, hearing the other woman call her mom and Quentin confirming they supposedly had a child together she froze for a moment. “Our what?” “Our daughter,” Quentin said. “From the future. We worked things out it seems.” Or at least enough to make a baby which they could have theoretically done a couple of times here and now but Audrey had said that things were good which was a relief. “And she grew up here, we stay here. Everybody does.” Audrey was too busy staring at her mom to notice anything unusual between her parents. Even if they weren't together together, they were still her parents. They got together eventually, and that was all that mattered to her. "So, what dad, I mean, Quentin said...sorry! I'm Audrey. I'm your daughter from the future, and as I said to dad, growing up in Atlantis is… always surprising????? Surprise?" She hoped at least that it was a good surprise, or that it might be, eventually. If Alice ever wished she could read minds now was that time. She looked back and forth between Quentin and Audrey, trying to detect some sort of trick in this. Judging from Quentin she couldn’t find any dishonesty in either of their confessions. Alice couldn’t help when she began to stare at Audrey, who she couldn’t help but admit did greatly resemble her. “This is a surprise,” she said, looking back to Quentin. God, she hoped she wasn’t pregnant right then because if this did pan out to be true it was very possible she was carrying this girl right now. She shook her head and looked back to Audrey again. “Where have they put you to live? We can walk you there,” she asked curiously. "At the hotel," said Audrey, as she walked with her parents. Maybe there was a chance (slim though it may be) that her parents wouldn't be completely awkward for her entire stay. |
