Choosing a baby name

Christopher came out into the living room after reading and singing to Lauren. He sat down on the couch next to Christine, pulling her feet into his lap and rubbing at them. There was so much going on in Atlantis that he wasn't surprised when Luna curled up at his side, pressing her weight against his thigh. Having two Lauren's was certainly an experience and it was quite something to see his daughter all grown up (though it was somewhat panic inducing for part of him). Having Phil here was unexpected, but grounding and he was glad to be able to share this new life of his with his best friend. "How are you feeling?" he asked, thumbs and fingers moving over her feet. It had been a hell of a few days. Meeting grown up Lauren, the influx of people, it was a lot to handle and Christine was exhausted. She was determined to work up until the baby was born but she was beginning to wonder if that was the best decision. With Lauren, she’d worked right up until she went into labor (and was in fact at work when it started) but she was also six years older now and had done some interdimensional hopping. Maybe she’d back off a little but for right now, she wasn’t ready to give in. “I’m exhausted,” she said with a sigh. “I’d lie and tell you I was fine but you’d know I was lying and I’m too tired to deny it. That feels really good by the way.” her feet were killing her and having them rubbed felt amazing. “It’s nice to know that Lauren turns out to be as amazing as we both knew she would be.” Christine smiled. “Still hurts my head to see her all grown up,” Chris admitted. With all the departures and arrivals, Atlantis always felt so transient. It saddened him a bit to know his daughter would grow up in a world without Starfleet. “Does all the extra arrivals mean extra work for you in medical?” He asked, eyebrow arching. “You know, no one will fault you if you take a few days off.” “No, it doesn’t. We have enough people now that I can do more of the paperwork and less of the examining. Trust me, if Claire or Leonard thinks that I’ve been on my feet too long, they don’t hesitate to let me know. I don’t think you’ve met Claire have you? Claire Temple I mean. She’s a nurse who joined us in Breckentale, we were friends there and we still are.” Christine had enjoyed getting to know her here, they worked well together and it was nice that their friendship had continued even when they were back to themselves.” “I don’t think I’ve had the chance yet. But you should invite her over for dinner sometime,” he said as he continued to massage her feet. “Speaking of friends, Boyce showed up today - not through intake though - one of those special arrivals like older Lauren.” Christine didn’t say anything at first, unsure of what exactly to say. She knew that Boyce was Chris’ friend but he had once been far more and she’d been surprised to see him. “I know. I saw his post on the network. He seemed a little less than pleased to see me though. I’m not sure why, I never really talked to him much even when I was working with you and he’d stop by.” Chris shrugged. “He’s probably just being Phil and doesn’t know what to make of all this. I mean, it’s a lot to take in - showing up somewhere to find out your best friend who you thought was dead is actually alive , not to mention married to someone twenty years younger who you didn’t know they were seeing, and has a kid? It’d throw me for a loop.” “I can see that. Finding you here was a lot for me to take in too but I’m very glad I did,” she smiled at him. “And I wouldn’t trade what we have for anything. You, me, both Laurens, and….what are we going to name her? We should probably figure that out.” They had talked about names but their time in the alternate universe had kind of derailed that and they hadn’t made a decision. “It’ll be time before you know it.” "Believe me, nothing could tear me away from you," Chris said with a smile. Christine had made plenty of friends here but it had been harder for Chris. Half the Starfleet folks still treated him with the distance that came with command and he was grateful to have his best friend here and hoped he'd stay for the birth of his kid. "I'm horrible with names, Christine. I'm pretty sure you don't want me naming our daughter after a starship." Christine laughed. “I refuse to name our child Enterprise or Titan. She would kill us if we did that to her.” She thought for a moment, running through names in her head. She had named Lauren after her mother and Chris which had been an easy choice but this time she was stumped. “Is there anyone in your family that’s special to you? I like the tradition of passing on a family name and Lauren’s already got her grandmother’s name which is my middle name and her middle name comes from you. So you get to pick this time.” She suddenly realized that she didn’t know the names of Chris’ parents or if she had, she’d forgotten them. Chris probably was the kind of man who would name a child after the Enterprise. "If I was going to name her after a ship, it'd be more along the lines of Olympia. Olympus was my first ship after all. Plus, works better than Aldrin or Yorktown. Although Aldrin would work for a boy." He smiled softly. Most of his family had passed already, which made it easier for him to throw himself into Starfleet. "My mom's name was Willa, though, if you want to go that route." She thought for a minute and then smiled. “I like Willa, that’s a pretty name. Willa…..let’s see..Willa Marie? I don’t know anyone in particular with Marie as a middle name but it fits. Willa Olympia might be a little too much for her.” "I'd probably go with Willa as a middle name," Pike said. He didn't mind honoring his mother but he wasn't sure he could call a kid by his mother's first name. "But I'm open to first names if there's any that have been on your mind the last few months.” Christine bit her lip, her expression thoughtful. She’d thought of several names but it was hard to decide. Then it hit her, she’d read it in a book recently and had liked it. “Emily,” she said. “Emily Willa. What about that? It’s not too fancy and I’ve always preferred traditional names to the more trendy ones anyway so what do you think? Because once we tell Lauren, she’s going to be Emily no matter what we name her.” "Emily could work. I'm actually surprised Lauren hasn't already named her," Pike said, reaching out and rubbing a hand over Christine's belly. "Then again I'm not sure we want to entrust our daughter's name to a child's whim." “Oh god no. I can’t imagine what she would come up with!” Christine laughed. “She’s liable to come up with anything. I mean we could cheat and ask Big Lauren but that’s not any fun. I have no idea how that kind of thing works as far as if we can change what’s already happened there by changing things here but I don’t think it changes anything. I have no idea and it gives me a headache thinking about it.” "I'm still shocked that the world hasn't imploded with having two of them in the same place," Chris said with a laugh. "Emily Willa it is then." Christine poked at her stomach. “Hey you, you’ve got a name now. Emily Willa Pike. That okay with you?” To her surprise, she felt the baby flip over and she laughed. “Oh my god, Chris, I think she approves. I’ve always believed they can hear in there anyway. So I’d say we’re all in agreement.” "Not going to keep her Chapel Pike like her sister? She should have your last name as well," he said, leaning over and pressing a kiss to Christine's belly. "Because I'm pretty sure you're going to take after your mama.." She thought for a moment. “She’s part of both of us. You’re right, she should have both of our names.” Christine sighed, hating to spoil the moment. “I would much rather stay here with you rubbing my feet but I woke up our daughter and now she’s bouncing on my bladder.” With a chuckle, she moved her feet off Chris’ lap and leaned over to kiss him. “I love you. Now grab a hand and haul my fat butt off the couch.” |
