The three best things about today:
-agreeing to marry my best friend
-being released from medical
- turning 54.
Drinks are on me tonight at Lightening Brew.
SHIELD agents generally don't have a long life expectancy. It comes with the job description. From the moment Nick Fury asked me to be part of something bigger my senior year in high school, I was pretty sure I was going to give my life to SHIELD. And I had no regrets when that happened during the attack on New York. After all, I'd already managed to last longer than most SHIELD agents. Besides, I'd survived being Barton's handler, which was a feat in and of itself.
The point I'm trying to make is - everyone is shocked that I was so willing to die this time. Maybe it was selfish, but I've had a full life. I found my family in SHIELD and then Avengers. I loved. I lost. I made mistakes.
When I was a kid, I idolized Captain America. I've been fortunate enough to live a life surrounded by heroes. Not just the ones who wear capes and have superpowers, but the ones who are always willing to do the right thing and fight for the little guy, no matter the cost. And for that, I am grateful.
Despite what happened back home (and I stand by the decision I made there), I am grateful to be alive, to see this birthday, and to be surrounded by an island full of heroes - or people who are willing to do the right thing and fight the good fight, even far from home.
