Rose is having a baby! :D
At first, Rose thought it was just indigestion. Despite her promises to not gross Mara out with her weird food combos, she’d mixed some pretty weird concoctions for her own food when she’d snuck all that Chinese into medical for her. It helped when you were friendly enough with some of the staff and it probably also helped that there wasn’t much of anything wrong with Mara now, thanks to Lissa. She’d sat and talked with the other woman for a couple of hours yesterday before making her way home to her room and then she’d started to feel kind of weird, but it wasn’t anything she thought anything of. Dimitri was good at the distracting thing and she was feeling a lot better about a lot of things now that Jim was awake and Lissa and Eddie were both back from Narnia and perfectly okay. Things were looking up and she wasn’t busy worrying about friends or wishing she could be there, to help keep them safe. Her stomach had kind of hurt all morning, but that hadn’t stopped her from grabbing a large bag of Doritos before plopping herself down on a chair for a little while. She didn’t have any sessions today, with everyone just being back and the party last night, so she and Dimitri had plans to relax. “Hey, do we have any ranch?” she asked, thinking somehow that would go good with Doritos. Without waiting for an answer, she started to get up and that’s when she felt the contraction. “What the hell?” she asked, instinctively grabbing her belly. It was hard to even know when she was due, anymore, with the whole time jump from Breck to here, but that didn’t mean she was expecting him to come now. Dimitri was glad to see Rose more relaxed. He knew that not being in on the action had been hard for her, it had been hard for him too, not being able to go to Narnia but his place was with Rose and there was nowhere he would rather be. When she grabbed her stomach, he immediately looked up. He’d been around when his younger siblings had been born and he’d helped with some of the births in their community so he had a pretty good idea what was happening. “Is this it?” he asked. “Do you have any idea?” Dimitri himself couldn’t offer any help as to how far along she was since he hadn’t been there for the conception but Rose’s expression certainly looked like someone in labor. “Give me the bag,” he said, reaching out for it. “Sit down and let’s see if you have another one. It could just be random but if you have another one and they’re regular, we should take you to medical and let you get checked out.” His voice was calm but inside he was anything but calm. This was his child, he’d never expected that he’d be able to have one unless he entered a relationship with a Moroi but after meeting Rose, he’d known that wasn’t going to happen. Nodding mutely, Rose did as she was told for once. She handed him the bag of Doritos, that she hadn’t even opened yet and sat back down, trying not to panic. Was this it? It seemed like she’d been pregnant forever and yet the idea of labor, of actually having the baby terrified her. All her old fears about having to be a mom came flooding back and she stubbornly pushed them aside. Not now. She needed to stay calm. Several minutes passed before the next contraction hit. She’d been about to ask for her Doritos back when she felt it and her face screwed up in pain again. She looked up at Dimitri, trying to put on a brave face even though she was kind of freaking out. “I think he’s coming,” she said. Dimitri had been moving around their apartment, getting things together but keeping an eye on the clock. It had been ten minutes since Rose had had the first contraction so they should have time. Then again sometimes first babies came fast and he had no idea what to expect here. To his knowledge, two dhampirs had never had a baby together. “I have your stuff,” he said. “We should get to Medical. I think this might be it. I know that the times I helped my mother, it started out slow like ten or fifteen minutes apart so we should have time.” Dimitri reached out and pulled her to her feet. “So what’s the fastest way to get there, do you think? I also haven’t asked you if you’ve seen a doctor here. That would be a good thing to do, call whoever it is.’ If Dimitri didn’t know what to expect, Rose definitely didn’t. She’d never even witnessed this before. Luckily, he was staying calm, which helped her stay calm, too. She cracked a few jokes and acted like everything was cool, but she was internally kind of freaking out about this. “I saw Molly in Breck, but we haven’t been here that long,” she admitted. She hated to bother her when Jim had just woken up and she knew she and McCoy were spending some time together, but she reluctantly pulled out her phone, anyway. Molly wasn’t officially a doctor here, but there was no one else Rose felt more comfortable with. “We’ll probably have to walk unless you’ve learned to teleport in the last 10 minutes,” she joked. Luckily, the medical center wasn’t that far away from the housing. “No I haven’t. I wish I could right about now though,” he said. Thankfully it wasn’t that far and he was glad that Rose had someone to call. Dimitri knew that trust wasn’t always easy for Rose and this was going to be a new enough experience as it was without adding a doctor that she didn’t know to the mix. They got to Medical and were put into a room. There were a lot of people there who had been injured in the battles but they found a spot to put them easily enough. Dimitri was keeping an eye on Rose’s contractions which were still coming ten minutes apart on the dot. He took her hand when they got her into bed and kissed her forehead. “I love you, Roza,” he said. “You and Ivan are going to be just fine.” Rose laughed at that. “Hey, we’ll be fine,” she assured him. The contractions were a pain in the ass, but they weren’t too close together for her to walk, even if she’d have to stop if one hit her again. Molly answered her text and Rose took a second to reply, answering her questions before she slipped the phone back into her pocket. Dimitri had everything they needed, so she let him lead her out the door and then they walked toward the medical center. The 15 minute walk took just a few minutes longer when she felt another contraction partway there and she gripped his hand tightly until it passed. “Molly’s waiting for us,” she informed him confidently as they reached medical. Despite the number of injured people occupying the rooms, they had found a place for Rose and Molly had the room ready for them when they arrived. “Yes, we are going to be fine,” she said, laughing as she shook her head at him. “You’re totally freaking out, aren’t you?” He was putting on a good show of staying calm, but she knew him. She could tell he didn’t feel as chill as he was trying to act. He looked at her and made a face. “Of course I’m not freaking out inside, why would I be? My fiance is about to give birth to our first child in an alternate universe. Why should I be freaking out?” Dimitri squeezed her hand. “Okay so maybe just a little bit but I know you and I know Molly wouldn’t let anything happen to you. It’s just….this is all new for me. I mean it’s new for you too but you’ve had a little time to get used to the idea.” Not that he was complaining, finding out Rose was carrying his child had been the best surprise he’d ever gotten. “And I can’t wait to meet him.” “You never talk this much, comrade,” she teased him. She loved it, she loved seeing him so anxious about this, even if it wasn’t that obvious to everyone else. Dimitri usually seemed so unshakable, but this had thrown him. She knew it wasn’t it a bad way and she thought it was kind of cute. “You’re not the one who has to go through labor, at least. I bet this is going to be way more fun for you than it is for me,” she joked. Truthfully, she was a little nervous, but she trusted Molly. She knew her friend would get her through it. It was almost seven hours later when Rose laid back, sweating and exhausted against the pillows while Molly got Ivan cleaned up so she could hold him. Dimitri’s hand would have been crushed if he wasn’t just as strong as she was, she thought. Whatever had possessed her to try and do this naturally, she was pretty sure she’d been insane. As much pain as she put her body through on a regular basis, giving birth was completely different. “I love you,” Dimitri whispered, pressing a kiss to the back of her hand. He was a little bit in awe of Rose right now. He’d watched her fight, he knew what she was like when she was determined to do something but watching her give birth had amazed him. When they talked about the miracle of childbirth, they weren’t kidding. It was truly a miracle and he couldn’t believe that the two of them had created a life. Sentiment wasn’t really their thing most of the time. Dimitri was a man of few words and while Rose talked enough for the both of them, she usually hid her feelings behind jokes and sarcasm, even with Dimitri. They didn’t exchange these words very often, but they didn’t have to. There were enough meaningful looks to say it for them. Dimitri was one person she could sit in complete silence with and not feel the urge to fill it. She didn’t hesitate in returning his words, though, as she turned her head to look at him and smiled at the lips on her hand. “I love you, too,” she told him. She lifted her head, trying to see her son, even though she trusted Molly was taking care of him. It wasn’t long before she was holding him in her arms, but Rose had never been very patient. “He has your nose,” she murmured, smiling over at Dimitri with so much love in her eyes. This was the moment she’d been scared of for months, but now that it was here all she could feel was happiness and wonder at the life they’d created together, their son. She’d never felt more blessed. Hie eyes were filled with wonder and love as he looked at their son. “He does, doesn’t he?” he said. “But he’s got your eyes, well what little I can see of them since he opened them and then closed him right back. I wonder if he’ll have your appetite,” Dimitri grinned at her. He was happier than he’d ever been in his life, this was what he’d always wanted but had never expected to have. He had been committed to his job as a Guardian and even after he’d met Rose, he hadn’t thought they would be able to have children. While he still didn’t understand exactly what had made it possible and truthfully didn’t want to know the details, he was grateful for seeing Rose holding their son was worth it. “I hope that wherever he is, Ivan can see him,” he said softly. Rose almost told him that Ivan had been in Breck, but she wasn’t sure what good that would do and she didn’t want to make him sad. She laughed, instead, at his comment about Ivan’s eyes. Hers and Dimitri’s were the same color, but it was true that Ivan’s held the same shape as hers. It was amazing, seeing both of them reflected so clearly in Ivan’s features. When she’d first realized she was pregnant in Breck, it had been after losing Dimitri and Rose had thought about how she’d have a piece of him in their child, but she hadn’t been prepared for how much of him she would see in their son. How much of both of them. Even her memories of Taisia couldn’t prepare her for how much she loved the little boy in her arms. “I didn’t know it was possible to love something this much,” she said, more emotion than she would normally show shining in her eyes as she looked up at her fiance. She knew he would understand what she was feeling. This right here wasn’t something they’d even been supposed to have. Even after learning about Declan and the effects of spirit on a restored dhampir, having a child of their own could have proved dangerous. It was why they’d chosen to adopt in their future. That hadn’t been a worry in Breck and it wouldn’t be here. This alone gave them a good reason to stay, no matter how dangerous it got. “Neither did I. Or that it was possible to love something so much that didn’t have to do anything to make you love them other than simply show up,” he reached out and touched Ivan’s tiny hand. “Can I hold him?” He’d been dying to but he wanted Rose to go first and he’d loved watching her with their son but Dimitri wanted to hold this little miracle of theirs, to convince himself that he wasn’t dreaming, that all this had actually happened. Nodding, Rose handed their son to him and smiled as she watched him take him into his arms. Seeing that look on his face, she felt her smile getting even bigger. There was a time not that long ago when she didn’t think she’d be sharing this with him. He’d been gone when she found out she was pregnant and at the time she’d had no idea if he would be coming back. She thought then that she’d be doing this alone. Having Dimitri here, being this happy, it was more than she’d expected and she almost wished she could freeze this moment. “You’re a natural,” she mumbled, watched Dimitri bond with his son. |
