Who: Sidney Parker and Jonathan Strange
Where: The Crown Hotel
What: Assigning blame
Sidney passed no less than three acrobats and two bearded women on his way back to town from his favorite cove. His mood only soured further as he drew near the hotel and encountered a man dressed in red scarves smelling suspiciously of fire accelerant.
He knew whose fault it was. Oh, it was Tom's fault, to be sure—his brother perhaps reigned with the supremacy of a ringmaster over this present situation—but Tom wouldn't have come by the idea had it not been for an off-the-cuff remark, or several, originating from the shiftless mouth of one Mr. Jonathan Strange, who Sidney had made the mistake of introducing to his family. This mistake had only come as a result of Tom's persistence, however, so as far as blame went, Sidney considered himself acquitted.
He blew through the door of the Crown Hotel with the force of a tempest, like the arrival of a long-expected ill omen; his hat was off, his cigar primed, and he was seated at his usual table with a drink at the ready before he realized he had barked a command for one. The employees were by now used to his changeable demeanor, so while his conscience reared itself to chastise him—in the voice of one Miss Charlotte Heywood—an apology for his conduct did not appear instantly necessary. He would tip well, he decided, and allowed himself to think no more about it. His thoughts were still with that damned Strange, who couldn't help but then appear as if conjured. When Sidney was inevitably espied amid his trademark smoke, all he could muster was a black look, which was Very Black Indeed.
"I hope you are well pleased with yourself."
He was surprised the man did not already have his face painted.Status: In Progress
