[It may be the smell more than anything else that calls you now to the Arena. It smells so good it’s almost maddening. No matter what your team managed to scrape together for breakfast, by the time you get to the arena, your mouth is watering and you are famished. Nothing has ever smelled so good.

And when you arrive it’s easy to see why. There is a buffet set out, with every variety and preparation of meat available. Fried pederpes, slow stewed raptor, squidrats curried in sauce spicy enough to make even them seem tasty. There’s barbeque, grilled legs, pulled meats and racks of ribs nearly the size of a full grown man. Steamed fish, fried fish, fish sticks, fish cakes, fatty lizard cutlets shaped like little fish. At the center of it all is an exquisitely prepared and sliced traditional Vulpeculan twelve-layered combobeast. There is precious little garnish, and no side dishes at all to speak of- vegetables have been used sparingly if at all. The only other thing missing is any sort of personal place setting. There are no plates, no knives, no forks. Just the meat. The only individual vessels you’ll find at all are wooden cups full of thick, dark red wine.

The meats steam, crackle and glisten. It looks so good. It looks so good.

Around the Arena are the War Rooms that may be familiar to some, as each new team enters the arena, a grayed out door gains the color of that team]
