And hilarious.

[Grumble grumble]

... I suppose I wasn't using that dignity anyway.

Trust me, dignity is the least of your worries here.

Yeah but as far as I can tell, there's absolutely nothing I can do about the bigger stuff. So I may as well worry about the small stuff while I still can.

... in the grand scheme of things? There's not a lot of things you can do, no. The trick is coping.

... I seem to recall having this conversation last time, too.

Yeah, sorry. It comes up a lot. And it's the veterans' job to keep bringing it up, just like it's your job to keep us from going over the edge.

... Keep you from going over the edge, huh. ... I hadn't thought about it that way before.

Betcha a lot of people don't. Think about it, I mean. For me ... Faith pulling me back from that nasty decision isn't the first time I've needed someone to remind me how to be human, and it won't be the last.

But-- that's also the reason that... game... happened to Lacerta, though, isn't it? That wasn't a competition. Nobody was competing, it was just... a slaughter.

That's ... yeah okay, that's harsh even for the Judges. Usually it takes a huge sacrifice to get them to come down on you like this. Not being the first to give up.

[Grits teeth]

So then they just used them as a-- a demonstration? Is that what you're trying to say?

It's possible. Could be that Gambler's just a dick and just wanted to pick on Lacerta. Or he just snagged the team who'd been loudest about self-sacrifice most recently.

What happens if we refuse? If everyone refuses to kill other people? Do they just kill us all, then? Is that it? We all die? No revivals?

That happened once, actually. We defused one of Trickster's games and everyone got memories.

... and then Trickster went crazy, probably died, and got replaced by Flowers.

So then-- why only once?! Why hasn't it happened again since then? If everyone knows now that it can be done, then...!

Because most of the time managing something like that causes godawful backlash. Maybe they can't afford to kill all of us, but that doesn't mean they can't make things hell.

Right, because they haven't managed that one already.

Why doesn't everyone just refuse to play, then?! No matter how you justify it, murder is still murder! What's so important to you that you'd be willing to kill people for it? I'd rather-- I'd rather stay in this cave without any memories for the rest of my life than watch another person get killed, or maimed, or turn into some monster who'll even be a party to it!

... there's a lotta different answers for that. But we're here for some damn good reason, one way or another. At one point we thought it was worth the murder and the crazy and the pain. I don't trust the Judges, but I do trust the guy I saw in my memory tube.

...

If something happened in my past life that was worth killing people over, I'm not sure I want to know about it.

Also possible. Carly ... my teammate, she was pretty sure she'd done something awful. But Sabra made her into a better person, even with all the murder and shit.
