WHO: Severus Snape & Lily Evans
WHAT: It's Lily and Severus' first day of work as Professor Slughorn's assistants. Nobody thought to inform Lily that her ex-bestfriend would be the one competing with her. Awkward.
WHEN: Monday morning, before classes start.
WHERE: Hogwarts, in the Potions Classroom.
RATING: PG just because.
STATUS: In Progress.
It’d only been a few years since he’d been here last, but to Severus Snape it might as well have been two lifetimes. The darkened potions room in the bowels of Hogwarts, was exactly as he remembered it last. It even smelled the same, the same hundreds of different ingredients wafting in the air. The gloomy, musty feeling the room gave off was deeply comforting. It reminded him of times when life was simpler, and when he didn’t spend almost every waking moment wondering how long till he was found out by the Dark Lord.
The sound of nearby footsteps caught his attention, and he instantly looked towards the closed door. When the footsteps had passed by without anyone else entering, did he dare turn back to the potions book he’d been reading earlier. The nostalgia had been a momentary distraction to his current predicament, but now it loomed over him with such an oppressive air; he had briefly considered running away somewhere where he wouldn’t have to deal with any redheaded estranged bestfriends ( that he'd put directly under the Dark Lord's scrutiny).
He was no coward.
Severus believed it enough to remain sitting, his complexion drained of what little colour it had left. With a slight tremble he turned the page in his book, not really looking at what it actually had to say. For a moment he tried to concentrate on what it said, something about kneazle fur being a distinctly powerful ingredient in memory potions.
When he heard the sound of someone else walking down the hall nearby, he gave up on the task all together and hurled the book shut. Severus tried to ignore the intense pounding of his heart, squared up his shoulders to look as big as possible, then turned to face the doorway. He’d be damned if she caught him acting like such a coward, Severus still had his pride after all.
Severus was an adult.
He would face her like one.
Now if only he could stop his hands from shaking. And where was Slughorn-?
