Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:question: html/css, tools: html, tools: lj-cuts

I have a question about how to do the parentheses-less cut-tags. For example, the entry would look like this on the friends page, but when you click the link it takes you to the entry itself, like so, so that the "cut tag's" text is part of the entry. Anyone know/have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

It's probably just a separate entry and a link instead of using the cut tag?

I thought so too but it's actually the same entry (with the same entry number/url and everything).

Does IJ allow the use of java for paid accounts like LJ? If so, it might be that. Or someone's found a clever way of mixing hidden tables and cuts.

Oh hmm, the entry in the screencaps is actually from LJ, not IJ, so do you think it might be java? I just assumed that it's some kind of code that's transferrable between LJ and IJ like most everything else.

I really have no idea. I know you can mimic an LJ-cut on wordpress with java. But I'm not exactly sure. The only person I know of who uses this is [info]sherlock and she has a paid account.

Hmm, oh well. Thanks anyway!

Of course. I'm fairly certain the suggestion below will work for you but you need the first span tag. It might be span="display: none" as well. BUT IDK TBH. <3 Good luck figuring it out, though. And it's a very brilliant question.

I'll definitely try that, thanks for all the suggestions!

Someone has done this I just can't think who, I thought it was [info]sherlock but apparently not but the coding is:

Obviously changing the georgia/size as you need! Wish I could remember where I got it from. But hope that helps!

Thank you so, so much! You (and whoever coded this) rock!

Sorry to be a bother, but I actually have another question. It didn't work when I tested it just now, and I think I might be doing it wrong. I'm assuming that where it says "text" between the link tags is where I put my "cut tag" text, is that correct? Then where should I put the text I want in the entry that's inside the "cut-tag"? Thanks so much!

I should have done better instructions! Sorry about that. The first 'text' is what you want to come before the link the 'text' between the and is the text you want the link to be and then you can have more text after the </a> if you want! Then the content of the entry after the cut tag.

I imagine you may have this all from [info]zombiephile's comment but I thought I'd comment so I don't seem rude! Hope you've worked it out :D

You left out an opening span tag there.

Actually I meant to remove that span completely but forgot to remove the closing one. It was a doubled up georgia/size formatting for some reason. Thanks though!

Okay, so! Here's the code I use:

"Link Text" would be the text of the "cut" ("If you see a friend without a smile..." in your example).

The text of the entry would go after the closing span tag.

Basically, what happens is that the span tags essentially hide the actual cut-tag (hence the "display:none" part). BUT the cut is still there, so you have to click the link in order to open the rest of the entry.

Did that make sense?

HERE'S A LIVE EXAMPLE!

http://ellie-cooks.insanejournal.com/2009/01/09/

That's the view you'd see from the journal itself, with the pretty lyrics. The bolded lyric in the middle ("I believe that junk food tastes so good because it's bad for you") is the link. Click it, and you get to the entry.

Oh, and I don't know if closing the lj-cut later is entirely necessary, but it's habit for me to close all my tags, so I stick it in there, anyway. AND IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE: if you do close the cut-tag, anything you put after it will show up from the journal-view, beneath whatever you had put above the cut-tag.

You're welcome! :) It always drove me crazy, wondering how to do it. I don't remember who I asked, but they were a godsend. :) And I'm always happy to spread the love.
