Entry tags:tools: thread unfolder

Lovely people of the [info]rp_tutorials! I have come to share my wisdom and knowledge with you and let me tell you, that doesn't happen very often. I normally troll through [info]rp_tutorials because I am coding/html/EVERYTHING illiterate and this lovely place helps change that but lo and behold I found something I can share!

I have discovered that most rpers tend to use either Firefox or Chrome as their preferred browsers because they both have amazing add ons that make rping WAY easier for those of us who do it than IE does. (Seriously, if you're still using IE? COME LET US SHOW YOU THE LIGHT...and give you cookies because who doesn't like cookies?) The feature that I have seen most rpers use though that for some reason Chrome hasn't been compatiable with is a thread unfolder. For those have no idea what this a thread unfolder can take a page that looks like this and make it look like this without having to open a new window to unfold threads and without having to open new tabs.

Step 1: The first thing you are going to need to do is download Chromes Tamper monkey add on. It takes no time at all to install and as soon as you click the little button that says Add to Chrome and BAM! There it is. If it doesn't show up right away just close your browser, reopen it and it should be there. (I highly suggest closing all other tabs in Chrome before you add Tamper monkey and add the script to allow the thread unfolder to work just in case you have to close and reopen your browser multiple times. You shouldn't have to but with technology you never know.) After you reopen your browser you should have a shiny new picture next to your address bar that looks like this:

(NOTE: your tamper monkey when first installed WILL NOT have the red number one. Mine has it because I already have the script for the thread unfolder added into my Chrome browser.)

Step 2: After you install your Tamper monkey, go here and install the LJ Thread Unfolder with "Unfold All". Simply click the giant green button that says install in the upper right hand corner of the screen. As soon as you hit the install button the tab should change to a page that looks like this:

CLICK OK to install the script in Tamper Monkey.

Step 3: Once your script is installed (its really as easy as just clicking ok. Don't think you've done something wrong because you clicked ok and nothing happened. That is what is supposed to happen) go up to your toolbar and click the Tamper monkey add on:

And then click OPTIONS:

Step 4: After clicking options you should be taken to a tab that looks like this:

CLICK ON LJ THREAD UNFOLD ONCE. It should bring you to a screen that looks like this:

Step 5: WITHOUT scrolling through the text find the area that says // @include http: //*.livejournal.com/*:

HIGHLIGHT livejournal, delete it and replace it with insanejournal:

Step 6: After you have replaced livejournal with insane journal find the little black save disc picture about the text area and click it:

As soon as you click it a box should pop up saying this:

Click ok.

Step 7: After clicking ok close out of Chrome and reopen it and upon doing so your Tamper monkey add on icon should now have a red number one box and upon clicking on your Tamper monkey you should find this:

If you do? SUCCESS! You now have the thread unfolder installed! Simply go to any page on IJ that you know of that has a collapsed thread because of the amount of comments and when you click into the entry you should find this:

If you do congratulations you officially have a thread unfolder in Chrome! I have found that if you have an insane amount of comments on and entry (like some of my games we have entries with 200+ comments on them) that it won't always unfold all of the threads. If you click on unfold and it doesn't unfold all of them? Just refresh the page and try it again. Also, if you should click on unfold and your comments disappear? (I seriously had a heart attack the first time this happened to me) don't panic like I did. Just refresh the page and the comments should come back and you should be able to unfold them just fine!

Hopefully this will help the rest of you in rplandia who use Chrome and have been going OMG MY THREADS DO NOT UNFOLD. WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY? This should help with that feeling of rage.
