I like it when people are considerate about that kind of thing, don't you? Besides, you're not my type.

[A pause.] Yes, I do. And why do you say that? What is your type, if you don't mind me asking.

Frankly? Rich. Older. Sort of... put together. I have enough on my mind. [She puts her feet up. Her chair creaks.]

You could always change types. [He shifts as well, the soft clink of the handcuffs as he switches the phone from one ear to the other.]

[Chuckling.] No, not me. I like being taken care of. [Sobering slightly at the metallic clink.] This is ending up like those weird women who marry people in prison and ask for their savings accounts?

And the only men who can do that are older, rich, and put together? [A soft laugh, filling the air.] No, it's nothing like that. [His voice is quieter, brows knitting together.] I would never ask that of anyone, nor would I put someone in that position.

[Squinting.] The only ones that do it well, really. [Smiling.] I'm not after your savings, Will, even if you hadn't any.

[A swallow.] You've high standards. Have any of them made you happy? [A pause.] And I didn't think that you were. Even if I do have savings.

No. I end up miserable and alone, so far. [Cheerful, but a bit bitter underneath, sigh.] Single again. Just got to find the right man. You know how it goes. [...] Better not to tell me how much you do have. I might ask you for a loan. [Not really. She's afloat at the moment.]

Then why not find you someone who makes you happy? [A pause.] And no, I can't say that I know how it goes. Dating has never been something I've excelled at. [A soft laugh at that.] It's enough. I live a simple life and that doesn't cost much. Government benefits are good.

That's what I'm trying to do. I hate dating though. It's like bartending. Hard not to be bored. [...] Are you trying to impress me? [Obviously not, grinning.]

Then find someone who doesn't bore you. Someone interesting. [...] I'm not sure. Am I? I think it's hard to impress someone when you're wearing handcuffs, honestly. Though I could be wrong. Perhaps you like that. [Teasing, oh so gently.]

One of them! [Gamely.] So keep your chin up, Will G. When you get out, you might convince me to go on a date between my real boyfriends. [Throaty chuckle.] I've got to get back in time for my shift.

[The call's too short, and his voice might be a little wistful.] Let's hope that day comes sooner rather than later. [A pause, head ducking slightly.] I hope the rest of your evening treats you well, Valerie. Talking to you tonight has been [...] well, as pathetic as it may sound, the highlight of my week.

[He listens to the click as the phone goes dead in his hand, and for a long while, he doesn't move from where he sits. He's in no hurry to return to his cell, but eventually he hangs the phone up and leans back in his chair, lifting his cuffed hands to push back through his hair.] Best and worst part of my night. Best and worst.
