quicklog: st. john and liam
Who: John and Liam
What: a meeting in the woods
Where: Tales world, near the Nightmare Before Christmas Doors in the woods
When: nowish
Warnings/Rating: TBD.

[Traveling was on the menu. Maybe it was getting completely drunk on other people's memories, or robbing a bank, or talking to that woman about Vietnam, but he was mobile. If nobody wanted to tell him why he was alive a fourth time, if nobody was going to make demands upon his person, he was going to start living it up again.

Whether he'd end up being good or bad this time was to be determined.

The door he found himself in this time was surprising. It actually took him a while to figure out that he didn't have his powers. He always fell into the weaker end of the power spectrum, and he never had used his powers for profit until Mystique recruited him. It was strange as he walked through these woods, a lifeless lighter in his hands.

Was this a better or worse fate?]

[There was something to be said about new environments; it was refreshing, exhilarating, exciting not knowing what was laying around each corner, what one would run into down the road. But that didn't mean that Liam was comfortable enough to let his guard down. No, the wings were kept hidden, carefully tucked beneath shirt and trouser, only the slightest hint that they were there if one was to look closely enough.

He had told Betty that he needed some time on his own, just a few hours, but he would return once he had had his fill, and that was how he came upon the man wandering in the woods. At first, Liam kept his distance, but that could only last so long before he stepped wrong, the dry branch cracking beneath his weight, alerting all around that he was following the stranger.]

[On the one hand, John had a lot of experience in fights, so he knew better than to let his guard down. However. What was the worst that could happen? Death? Betrayal? An incurable disease that turned his own body against him? Been there, and done it all. He didn't want to die, but he knew this life wouldn't forever. He might as well enjoy himself.

At the sound of someone nearby, his body tensed in instinct, but he forced a smile. He didn't have his mutation here. There was only so much he could do.]. So, the big bad wolf out there?

[Fighting was the last thing on his mind. He wasn't the sort who was cut out for it, didn't even particularly enjoy it, and he was quite sure that his employers would not be happy if he found himself injured in an altercation. So he stepped carefully and when the sound of the voice reached through the branches, out towards him, he stopped as well, a sliver of a smile pulling at his lips.]

No wolves here. I was concerned I heard one in your direction, however. [The voice was steady and even, the Southern drawl still pronounced, though softer after the years that had passed.]

[John laughed at that answer, stepping towards the other man with an open expression. The accent made him think of Rogue, that girl from a few lifetimes ago, who was all molasses when she spoke. The Australian accent sounded all the more strange in comparison to that one.]

So you came towards it? [Not the best decision, right?]

[Liam was fairly sure that wolves didn't laugh, so maybe that took the edge off slightly. He was still, though, as the other stepped forward, waiting until he was in sight before stepping out from behind the tree he had grown close to.]

If you were looking to cause harm, I doubt you would have called out to me as you did.

Maybe I'm the sort of wolf that likes to play with his food. [Way to not be reassuring, St. John Allerdyce. If nothing else, he could burn down the forest with his lighter. Could. But he had no desire to.

So he offered his hand.] John. Just goin' out for a walk in the woods. Nothing bad happened in doin' that. [He smirked. He knew his stories. Everything bad happened from just a walk in the woods.]

Are you trying to convince me to run away from the wolf? [It was said with humour in his voice even as he accepted the hand that was offered in his direction. Liam took in the smirk, the unfamiliar accent, and he dropped his eyes after a moment with a shake of his head.] Liam. And I'm simply doing the same. I needed a breath of fresh air. [He squeezed the offered hand before letting it go.]

And plenty of bad things happen from walking in the woods. Haven't you seen the news stories?

[John returned the firm shake, and although he wasn't a wolf, his grin was downright wolfish. The name sounded familiar from the journals, and he filed that away.]

News. Who has time for the news? [His voice dripped sarcasm. Yes, of course he knew it all.] Do you even get news here? [They were in the middle of the woods.]

[He grinned smugly.] So you are one of those displaced freaks like me. I thought I talk to you on the journals. [Didn't make either of them less of a wolf, but.] Doesn't seem like there's much to do here but clear your head. [He looked around at the expanse of trees in all directions.]

[Somehow, there was a bit of relief in knowing that John was from the same place, at least in a way. His name wasn't familiar to him, but he had to admit that he didn't spend a lot of time on the journals any longer. There was so much that he didn't remember, so many gaps in his memory, that it seemed to be easier to simply stay quiet and still rather than upset those he had no intention of upsetting.]

There are villages if you wander far enough. Other people. But yes, it's a bit more secluded than I'm comfortable with. I've spent most of my time in New York, lately. Marvel.

These people any interesting? [Maybe it would make for a good story. Or maybe it would be a waste of his time. John himself was a hermit one day and an extrovert the next, depending simply on how depressed he was about his lot in life. The fact that Liam was in Marvel--a word he learned to associate with his world--made John snort.]

Can't get the fuck away from that place even when I travel, huh?

[He'd consider it, then. John liked all sorts of people, even if he wasn't great at relationships. At all.

He followed alongside Liam and snorted.] Yeah, that's home. Born in Sydney, but I've spent a while in New York.

I thought I recognized the accent. [One foot scuffed at the ground as they walked, kicking up leaves before he settled his pace once more.] I'm from Mississippi originally. Lived in Vegas for a while before the hotel got involved. Gotham and now Marvel. I've a place in Manhattan now. Quiet, comfortable.

[Mississippi. Yep, just like Rogue.] Manhattan, quiet? Not the way I would normally describe it. But I guess this one's got fewer mutants running around causing mayhem.

Quieter than Gotham City, at least. [There was a pause though, at the mention of mutants, and he turned to look towards John, his gaze decidedly more frigid than it had been moments prior.] Not all of us cause mayhem.

[Some of the coldness eased at that, though his lips were still pressed in a thin line, wary. His interactions with other mutants had not been many in number, and there was still a definite amount of shame that came with the wings upon his back, hidden beneath his clothes.]

Do I cause trouble, or am I a mutant? Always on the latter, sometimes on the former. [His track record was mixed, and it was exhausting some days. The first time he had died, he died so that humans and mutants could put all the bad blood between them. On subsequent lives, he realized it was a vain dream.

But he definitely had no shame about it. Too many years in Mystique's Brotherhood, even if the rest of the world just saw him as a freak.]

You answered both, so I guess there's no need to clarify. [Liam let out a long breath and closed his eyes for a moment, trying to put aside some of the worry that had accumulated in the back of his thoughts.] I'm recent. The accident in Marvel a while ago. It happened then.

[Recent? How could he be recent, he didn't look so young--oh.] Accident? [That had been before John's time, but it had to mean one of two things. Either the event had caused Liam's latent mutation to activate or...the accident turned humans into mutants. Fucked up.]

I didn't mean to offend. [His lips pursed again and he shook his head, apologetic.] So the fire has to exist for you to manipulate it? Is that what it is? I'm just... I'm trying to understand how these things work. I'm still getting used to it.

[There was a large part of him that didn't want to show John, but the other man had been revealing enough with his own mutation that it didn't seem fair to withhold his own. So he started to take his jacket off, glancing towards John after a moment.] It's easier to show, I guess.

[The shirt was removed a moment later, revealing scars along his back and shoulders, but most telling of all were the wings that appeared. Pure white with the tips stretching down towards his feet, it was hard to believe he could have hidden them beneath the shirt and jacket he wore.]

Angel. Of the X-Men. They don't seem to be around in this Marvel. [He watched the wings, barely avoiding poking them. That would be rude. The word caught brought his attention back, and a frown to his face.] Caught? Mutant-haters?
