[Muerte]

I need a favor.

[batfam+/allies]

Now is the time to tell me if you want souvenirs from the Fairy Tale door.

You can ask.

I'm buttering you up first by being polite.

Alright, alright. I need you to bring me Crane's remains and stick around in case something bad happens to me.

Just like a biscuit.

No, it's an incredibly stupid idea. But, I don't mind looking like a fool around you. And, I think you just being there will keep him from spirit murdering me. On the plus side, I think he's actually come back, so maybe there won't be a reaction at all.

Stop thinking about my biscuits, Eddie. You're a married man.

Hm. [...] My next question, before I say yes or no: You said last time we spoke that you were stuck wherever you are until Halloween. Is that still true? Follow-up question: You want me to cross doors?

Well, now I am.

Yes, sort of. I'm still stuck in the Fairy Tale door, but I've been allowed to explore and visit other magic-types and try to raise the dead. Fun stuff. I'm currently in Sleepy Hollow, looking for an area that isn't an old battle ground. The less dead stuff around me when I do this, the better.

[She laughs, but doesn't reply.]

Okay. [A thinking 'okay', not an agreement 'okay'.] I think I know why you want to do this. Even if I'm not 100% comfortable with it, and I'm probably going to put it into the "Bad Idea" column. So, starting from the top:
-Yes, I can pick up his remains from your place and bring them out of the door.
-I can probably make it into the Fairy Tale door. The problem is not knowing what I'm going to be like when I get there. Going into Marvel used to make me human. 100%. So...
-If I'm feeling like myself, I can stick around, though I don't know the extent of "myselfness" I'll have.
-Church? Even those with cemeteries tend to be quieter.
-Does anyone else know you're planning to poke at this?

[He loves lists.]

-Fantastic!
-I don't want to risk you becoming permanently different or even temporarily uncomfortable. I'm not interested in putting you in danger ever again, you have to realize that. Though, generally speaking, being around me is a risk to begin with. I'm not really known for my safety precautions.
-Just having you there even if you can't do anything will be helpful. If Crane's spirit eats me, you can run away and then alert the others!
-Good idea. I think there's one at the edge of town.
-Batman...the batfamily in general. I'd ask one of them, but I guarantee I'm going to look absolutely silly when I attempt this. I don't need that kind of reputation with any of them right now.

-I'm going to say hi to Matilda when I'm there. It may take a few minutes. We have a lot to catch up on. And I have to meet Flounder.
-I know. [...] I have a lot of distance from the last time I was here. [...] I almost put a threat here. I don't want to put one here, though. Okay?
-I don't think that should be an issue.
-Check it out.
-Tell Bruce I'm helping you and when and where and all the details. Please. Just in case.

I didn't think I had to say it, didn't want to at this point really, but it came up. I don't want to feel like that again. It doesn't feel good to threaten anyone. Much less someone like you.

[Eddie was in a green outfit that completely matched the times. He couldn't resist and frankly he thought he looked pretty good in it. Then again, Eddie thought he looked good in spandex. He leaned on a nearby tree and left the door just barely cracked open. He'd normally wait out in the hall for her, but he took this curse very seriously. There was no doubt in his mind that if he tried to leave, he'd turn into a pile of bones. Or a frog. Those witches would probably try to turn him into a frog.]

[When the door creaked open, he gave a little bow that looked totally in keeping with the times and yet still so silly with Eddie's carnie flourishes.] Thank you for joining me, Muerte. [He waited for her to get situated in the door. If something went wrong with her god-chemistry, his plan was to just shove her out of the door before something got worse. Crane's remains be damned. His powers, which didn't come from this door at all, were working just fine. So, he had hope that he didn't walk her into another bad situation.]

[Death had known where Eddie was keeping Crane's remains, and a quick stop at his home to pick them up was hardly a difficulty. Plus, it offered her the opportunity to see Matilda, to offer pets and apologies for being away for so long. She was introduced to Flounder (who wasn't quite as certain about her as Matilda, but that was alright), and even made a round to greet the other animals. With the explanation that she was going to see Eddie (and the sad eyes that statement earned), Matilda allowed her to leave after only a few minutes, as long as she promised to deliver the message that being gone for so long was NOT to be allowed in their household.

She couldn't help but promise, even as she tried not to laugh.

Before stepping outside the DC door, she changed her clothing, not quite certain if she would be able to once she was in the hotel. Or after. The fabric of her dress rustled around her as she walked through the hallways, the skirts hiding the fact that she was still wearing heavy combat boots. Hair pulled up in a messy spill, the dress itself was nipped in tight around her torso before the skirts widened to the ground. It was a lot of material, more than she was used to recently wearing, but she'd spent enough time in dresses just like this one. It was as dark as her usual clothing, and anyone that saw her might mistake it (at first) for a mourning gown.

It was easy enough to find the right door, the spill of light spreading across the hallway floor pointing the way. The hotel itself was as silent as her mind, no awareness of living souls around her. She cradled the container close to her body as she stepped closer, taking a last moment to wonder if she was doing the right thing, stepping into another door. She didn't know what the effect would be - Marvel had made her human, but the Fairy Tale door could be different. But even if it was something awful, hadn't she had a decent run? She'd been ready to deliver the universe's final end; stepping through a new door would be fine, whatever it brought.

The door itself creaked as she stepped through, and the fall air was as silent as the hotel had been. She blinked, adjusting to the light, and smiled at Eddie, something small as she began to cross the space between them. It took a moment, but she stopped and frowned when she realized that she could feel him in the same way she could when he was in Gotham. Just him, which was strange even as it was familiar, and she stared at him for another passing breath before it hit. Everything.

The awareness of this universe came rushing in all at once, new people, new creatures, new expanse of spaces, everything. It rushed over and into her like a very large tidal wave filling a very deep hole. In the next moments, the rushing of feathers and wings was the only sound that could be heard, and when it stopped, suddenly, she was no longer standing there. The container remained, safe and upright on the ground where she'd been, but she was missing.]

[Eddie was in the very middle of breathing a sigh of relief when a flurry of wings sounded around him. His dark eyes went wide and he grasped at the air as if he could grab one of those invisible feathers. He thought he knew what that meant. He thought she was lost or broken and he whipped his head around to see if she was anywhere.] Muerte! [Eddie yelled and it sounded young and desperate. It bubbled up that feeling of loss Machina left him with and he called again, voice panicked and raspy with worry.] Muerte? I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.

[His horse, a black steed named Bart, neighed and kicked up on his hind-legs as the wings died down. The creature seemed to know what Eddie didn't. That a connection had been made between Death and everything everywhere, which calmed Bart almost instantly. Eddie? Eddie could only feel things that were beyond the living and death. And, even if he could sense her, his senses were clouded by panic.

Eddie backed up and leaned on the horse, breathing heavily and just about to collapse. He probably tried to say something, though none of it could be heard through stuttered whispers. Eddie wasn't afraid of many things anymore, but goddamned was he afraid of losing people.]

[It was only a matter of seconds, though over a dozen of those panicked breaths from Eddie. The world continued on, accepting everything in the same way Bart had, but the sounds of too-fast breathing still echoed around the space.

And then there was another rush, wind and rustling, skirts against Eddie's legs, and she was there. Standing too close, with wide eyes, wild hair, one hand reaching up to lay flat against Eddie's chest, pressing firm even as her fingers trembled.]

Stop. Slow down. I'm sorry. I'm here.

[His eyes stayed wide when she suddenly appeared like a magic show he never fucking bought a ticket for.] M-m-m- [Eddie tried as a tiny part of his mind did its best to convince him this was all a trick. That he had finally lost it. That he killed her and it was over something so, so stupid. How could he be that stupid? She could feel his heart going a mile a minute, beats erratic and uneven like his heart was barely holding together.] You-

[He seemed faintly proud he got a word out and pressed his palm over her hand on his chest. Something tangible, something there seemed to help him calm down. Eddie closed his eyes and leaned his head back on Bart, who didn't seem all that upset about the little riddled man using him for support.] Okay? [Eddie asked between breaths that were starting to even out.]
