log, Hogwarts: Sirius B/James B
[After this.]

[Lavender. The spigot spewed it, lilac, lolling, bubbles bowing, the air rich with it and heavy with wetness. James floated in the miniature sky on his back, backstroking in a swath through white. His glasses were removed, set aside on the lip of the large stone tub, sunken into the tiles of the floor, shining as they were like the scales of a mermaid's tail. Not a real mermaid, mind. But the sort that lounged in sugar-dyed glass nearby, giggling and splashing about most enticingly in stained waves. Scaly blues, aquatic greens inlaid in the ancient room. It reminded the young man in the bubbles of a Turkish bath, and he closed his eyes.

He enjoyed the suspension of weight.

It was similar to flying, he thought. The weightlessness.

But that thought was overshadowed by the toss of journal and quill, by the prick of tears as he considered the harsh truth of mortality. His parents were dead. He wouldn't see them again, whatever Sirius said, and how was he supposed to cope with that? There would be no funeral, no procession or remembrance. They were gone, long gone, as he himself supposedly was. Perhaps he—or some version of him—knew them, in the Great Beyond. Perhaps they were together.

He breathed out his nose.

Tightness curled in his chest, around his heart.

There had been no progress made in dressing himself. James was having a bath, and Sirius' presence didn't change that. He'd bathed in the room before, as it was open to Quidditch captains, and he'd learned long ago to not care much about his own nudity (unless Evans was around). Sirius would simply have to deal with it.]

[Sirius laughed, outright, and pretending to be offended] Have you got your own stall, Head Boy? So no one else's arse will sit where yours does for the duration of the year?

[Sirius watched James carefully, looked at him when he swam up, and while it wasn't James' nakedness that disturbed him, it was the lack of glasses and he often wondered if he would recognize James in public without them on. It had weirded him out for most of their friendship.

He gave James a sympathetic (as sympathetic as Sirius ever got anyway) look and was about to say yes, he was there to cheer him up, when he found himself completely soaked from head to toe. But James was laughing.] I see it's working. [He said dryly (lol), even as he trudged through the water to the edge to start taking off shoes and socks and everything else.]

[When Sirius' head bobbed above the water, an apple in a witch's brew, James continued to laugh, clearly delighted by his own cleverness. He splashed a wall of water toward Sirius as the other boy began to retreat to the fringes of the bath.—He didn't give chase, but instead, went, in fact, to pick up his spectacles from where he'd left them near the mermaid window.

With Sirius here, he didn't quite trust his surroundings enough to blunder through them blindly.—That and he knew it unsettled the boy.

He slipped them on and tread water enough to turn around, back toward his mate.] Alright, they're back on, you can look at me again, you idiot. [James breaststroked over.] So I'm to celebrate the birth of my son and mourn the deaths of my parents on the same day. [He was low in the water, its tide high on his face, chin brushing the warmth and safety of the bath.]

[Sirius was dumping out shoes and wringing out socks and brushing wet hair from his face practically all the same time, so he was pleasantly surprised to see James had his glasses back on even though he was now taking an unwilling bath in a fancy snobby bathtub and James was making morbid points about the weirdness of their lives.

He sat down on one of the weird underwater ledges and furrowed his brow.] No. We're not going to think like that, James. Here, its awful and we probably can't see them. But we're not going to just think all the terrible thoughts at once. Alright? One at a time. Your parents are my family too, and I refuse to mourn them at all, because where we come from they're fine. And if I'm not allowed to be miserable about getting you murdered, then we are going to think ridiculous happy thoughts about the state of your parents. [so there. He almost pouted, but he did splash some water in James' direction]

[The bath wasn't so deep as it felt when one submerged oneself. If James stood, it might come to his chest somewhere, but outside the comfortable confines of the water, he felt chilled. He was no Muggle, so whatever symbolism there was in him retreating to water, mother and womb, was lost on him. He mussed his already wanton hair with a habitual ruffling of his hair, another comforting gesture disguised and confused by the boy himself. He smiled as he led ripples through the bubbles and the bath, but that smile died (like his parents had!—That wasn't funny).

Black brows drew together as James stopped in front of Sirius. He listened until he was splashed in the face. He retaliated with a full arm swipe of the surface of the water, sending a glass wall of water toward Sirius where he sat.] —I know they're your family too. [He scratched his head. He took a deep breath.] Okay. They're fine. [The smile notched back onto his lips, half-heartedly.] Hating us in the south of France whilst you feel up a man in a skirt.

[Sirius was doused soaked, no hope, nowhere.] Precisely. And little do they know I'm here in the future bathing with their son whilst planning a birthday party for their grandson and a bloke called Neville.

[He splashed James again, water sloshing onto the floor, out of the tub, all over James, it was glorious. But even mid-splash he got a little introspective. He didn't know the ins and outs of what may or may not have happened to James' perfectly adorable parents. He just knew he didn't want to think about them dealing with losing James, and watching him go off to prison. It made him feel a little queazy. He even went a bit pale at the thought.] They are, James. They're fine. They've got to be.

[Predictably, the mention of 'bathing with their son' had James giving Sirius a lecherous waggle of dark eyebrows as he circled nearer.

Still, even as a slop of water sloshed over him, and as they made a mess of the bath, faucet still spewing lavender from the other end of the room, James caught the moon-paleness of Sirius' face. He continued to draw closer, stopping just outside of an inappropriate distance. He realized then he'd been taking this whole thing a little too personally, forgetting Sirius in lieu of his own feelings. He nodded, in a manner entirely earnest, and slid his arm around his mate's naked shoulders in a half sort of hug.] You're right. [He nodded again, his expression betraying nothing but genuine agreement. Until he dunked his mate's head under water with ruthless strength gained on the Quidditch Pitch and once again hurried out of reach.]

[Sirius rolled his eyes and his hands were ready in a defensive position in case his shit of a best friend decided to be his shitty shitty self]

[Honestly James, they're your parents you ought to take it personally! Sirius didn't like that he was requiring the half sort of hugs and his eyes narrowed slightly, but only really at himself.] I'm always ri-[he almost got the sentiment out when he was being pushed under the water and when he resurfaced he looked around for James for a moment and sputtered a bit of water and rubbed his eyes] I'm going to smell like Divination Class for a month.

[He moved all the way to the other side of the tub from James if only to have more of a chance to counter an attack] I'm sorry they're not here, mate. I know you miss them, and I'm sure you want to go home as badly as I do.

[Almost completely submerged, but for the top of his head, ears up, James peered silently at Sirius as the other boy thrashed to the surface of the bath and drew himself further away. His smile was entirely conspicuous, in spite of the lack of visible mouth, but—not for the first time, the expression waned. He blinked some water out of his eyes, digging a knuckle under his glasses as he stood some.] I do. [He sighed.

James didn't much worry about how he appeared to Sirius Black. They'd been through thick and thin and back, they were like brothers, it didn't matter to him if the other boy saw him sad about something he had every right to be sad about. So he let his shoulder sag. But he knew—he couldn't dwell on it. Not now.] What do we do for Harry, hm?

[Sirius could see the stupid underwater smile even if he couldn't, it was written all over James' face. The corner of his own mouth turned up and he let out a sigh, his own shoulders slumped] Don't ever tell anyone I said this, but we require adult supervision. We're going to lose an arm each before school even starts at this rate.

[On the subject of requiring adult supervision, parties was next and since there was no adult supervision to speak of Sirius' eyes almost lit up. Almost.] I've never planned a nineteenth birthday party before, but I imagine we invite everyone we know including Crazy Eyes and turn off all the lights. And drink until it stops hurting. [Grin. Thumbs up.]

[Warm water frothed in bubbles slid down the narrow plane of James' chest as he stood, tall, lanky, with an athletic slight. He watched Sirius closely from behind water-besotted frames, his wand not being handy enough to charm them as he did when it rained. He didn't disagree about adult supervision, though they were all technically of age.—He wondered perhaps if that was what French Weasley and Remus Junior didn't quite grasp—the Marauders, whatever had been written of them in history, infamy or pride, were yet boys. They were the children of war as much as any, though their climate was entirely different than those of following generations. Their parents were cracked by Grindelwald, frightened or combative, with tensions ever rising in the wizarding community along bloodlines when the German wizard fell to Dumbledore. And they themselves were raised in a world dark, tainted by the rise of a once-man bent on Power and the vanquishment of all who opposed him. They were fighters, men and woman yet boys and girls, who would, in time, lay down their lives as so many of their relatives had. If there was one thing to cling to, within the safety of Hogwarts' beating heart, it was one's youth, a sense of impermanence, of a world threaded with some gold on its tapestry of black.

The Marauders were boys, they were not men. Not here, not yet.

James thought of his mother as he laid back in the water to float. He kicked idly as he stared up at the vault of the ceiling.] Has Remus spoken with Teddy?

[They weren't even boys playing at being men, they were boys enjoying their boyhood for as long as they could, and in recent days they were confronted with what exactly it meant to become men in their own futures. It gave Sirius a sick feeling, and didn't inspire him to want to behave any differently. In fact, if anything, he'd likely just act out even more. And probably lose more than an arm in the process.]

I don't know, I haven't asked. I don't know if he's remaining calm because he's calm or if he's going to lose his mind when we aren't looking. So I just keep looking. Just in case.

[James rolled in the water, feet touching down, to look at Sirius. His expression was somber. Wet fingers nudged slipped glasses up the bridge of his nose.] Right then. [His jaw clenched and dark eyes moved sideways across the tense surface of the water, skimming toward the mermaid in her sea of glass. He seemed about to speak, but instead, one hand held to the arm of his glasses, he disappeared beneath the bubbles.

He swam in the approximate direction of Sirius. With a hand to each other boy's ankles, he dragged him under too.]

[Sirius had tried to escape. He had been about to push off from the bottom and and swim in the opposite direction but then James had hold of his ankles. He flailed but went under regardless and rather than fight him the turned on him and managed to grab hold of him and drag them both above water while keeping James in a headlock as much as he could. He was squirmy and water was heaving itself over the sides of the tub]

What the hell is wrong with you? You're like a water menace! I want no part of your weird mating rituals![He said still trying to maintain a hold and laughing.

[There was some thrashing, legs churning water that remained warm long after it ought to have cooled, and James struggled in Sirius' grip.] Leggo!

[Heavy, black glasses finally fell from James' face and plunked to the depths before.

Realizing this was his opportunity, James wriggling in Sirius' grip, to stare, as menacingly as possible, at the other boy, knowing the sight of a sightless James would drive him to fear. Or so he hoped.]

[Sirius managed to deal with James' weird looking face by just pushing him into the water. Unfortunately in order to do that he had to let go of his hold on the other boy which meant he had to push his face into the water and then flee. Quickly.

He pushed James face into the water, counted to three, and practically jumped over him to get away from him.]

[James laughed, but as he did so, he was shoved, face first, into the water, and as such gulped down lavender bathwater in a slop. He choked as he floundered away from his mate, laughing, crying, and trying to breathe.

He had to feel around under the water to pluck up his glasses and slide them back on. His face was red from the exertion of breathing, but eventually he was able to press his lungs back into place.] Git. [He coughed into his fist.] I just want you to love me.

[Sirius laughed, looked generally smug, and quite pleased with himself by the time James had his glasses back on his face.]

I do. [Said arms across his chest and a pout on his face.] Now get your arse out of the tub and help me sneak and inordinate amount of booze back from Hogsmeade.

[James did, gasp, shock, as he was told, and waded to the stairs that rose one up and to level ground. He padded up and into inordinate coldness, though he thought, quite vehemently, the steam ought to have assuaged that a bit more than it had. He hurried over to the messy pile of robes and trousers to fish out his wand.

He dried himself off with a simple drying charm and hustled into his clothing, one leg at a time. He even helped Sirius out and dried his clothing with a flick of his wrist and wand. He smirked at his friend and waggled his eyebrows.] What's the plan? Shall I be in the cloak and you the distraction, or what were you thinking?

[Sirius, grateful for the dry clothes got himself situated as well.] I'll be the distraction. [He answered easily enough. It was a sound plan.

[James rolled his lips together as he felt Sirius nearing him. He glanced up, his smile sprouting uncertain, but there. He inhaled deeply and nodded. It would be fine. He had to believe that. Black hair flopped in the boy's face.] Yeah. [He nodded again. James pocketed his wand.] Let's go get my son drunk for his birthday, shall we?
