Arizona had finally accepted that this was how life was going to be now. She still missed her wife and her daughter and there was nothing acceptable about it. But she couldn’t wait forever. She had to go to work and she had to talk to people and eventually she was going to have to learn how to live without them again. She hadn’t given up on them. How could she? But they weren’t here and she was and she couldn’t change it. She couldn’t change anything. After all the crap they’d been through, and finally figuring it out, getting their life back together, this happened. And she wished she knew what kind of higher power could be that cruel.
At least she still had a job.
Shrugging out of her jacket and changing out of her scrubs, she didn’t even bother to head home, instead stepping out into the halls of the hotel. Anything had to be better than going back to an empty house. She just couldn’t tonight. She passed slowly through the halls, taking a moment to study each door and wonder what was on the other side. Pausing near one, she reached out to press her palm flat against the door.
Could she open it? What would happen if she did? Would she be able to get back? Would she want to get back?
After a beat, she pulled her hand back. Maybe next time.
