[Private to Muerte]
[Groggy, hungover, worried about Gotham.]

Hey, I need you to step out of the door. Something's going on over there and I'm no help if I'm a ghost.

[Jason T.]

Bruce is gone. Can you tell me what's going on?

[Selina K.]
[Shouted from the floor of the apartment's office:]

You here?

[Donna C.]
[Later after texting Faol.]

Hey, are you okay?

[Darker.] I said goodbye. To all of it. I walked out of Destiny's Garden and I was done. [Getting angry - not at him.] I don't know what this means now.

It's a good riddle. [Long blinking pause as he lies on the office floor and tries to wrangle his thoughts.] You can't say goodbye to what you are.

I'm fine here! If you come here and we're both fleshy, then this ghost thing just becomes something we have to manage in the Gotham door! I don't care! Do you really think I give a damn about that? I want you, I want THIS. I love you I asdklcrapshiskdl [He goes to delete that last part, deleting some of the keysmashing before it just blinks. Then:] Sorry, that was selfish.

[Her stomach bottoms out when she registers what he's said (written), and she opens her eyes again to stare at the actual page, like she has to see it to confirm. And then she's moving, scrambling to her feet and moving through the hotel, messy letters as she moves.]

[He's cursing at himself for being an idiot and he figures there's a good faceslap in store for him. Eddie decides that he can take it and opens the door to his closet, which of course opens up to Passages instead of a place where he keeps computer parts. He's a mess. Stubble, PJ's, dark eyes filled with worry about everything. Trying very hard not to be woeful. He assumes she's already there, so he starts talking the moment the door opens. Babbling:] I'm sorry. I meant it, but I figured there'd be some smooth jazz playing in the background when I told you. Or maybe you'd tell me first that'd be a novel idea!

[She's not quite to the door when he opens it, not used to the way she can move again. It happens in stutters, an extra step of ground covered like a faulty, blinking film. She catches bits and pieces of what he's said, especially when she gets closer, her awareness of him tuning in like an old radio. It's been so long since she felt him like this, and it makes her stomach swoop again unsteadily, and then she's there. In front of the door, back to that thousand-millenium stare, like she's trying to see into every cell of him to make certain he's alright. What she's feeling and what she is (still Endless, even if it's imperfect in the hotel) batter against each other until she's not quite certain which way is up. But seeing him (PJ's, stubble, anxiety) only proves to her that whichever way the Powers That Be toss her, it doesn't change the way she feels about him. At least it hasn't yet.] I was never going to be the first to say it... [She sounds the same, maybe a little breathless, and soft.

She takes a deeper breath, one she doesn't need, and her eyebrows inch up. Hopeful.] Say it again?

[He smiles, recognizing that deep look and feeling comfort in it that way he used to. Eddie stares back, but he doesn't have the endurance she does with that kind of thing. He blinks slowly, but he's still smiling. Happy to see her. Eddie missed her, he always did. And he realizes then that he even missed this part of her. The Endless.

Eddie opens his eyes and there's courage there. Without hesitation because when he feels something so deeply it's written into his code.] I don't want to be apart from you. [He presses his lips together and then seriously:] I love you, Muerte.

[There were moments where she stared at someone and didn't even realize she was doing it, and it was that way in those moments with Eddie. Glad to see his smile and feeling a strange pull hooked behind her ribcage, she stepped forward just enough to linger in doorway, framed by it and half in two places at once. Once she was far enough forward to bring her presence at least halfway into their apartment, there was the lingering pressure of a breeze coming through from the hotel, and the scents of peace lilies, myrrh, and old candles heavy on the air. She was just enough human for her heart to race, and just enough Endless to trace the path of his life from beginning to end, seeing where and how she wove through it like a sable thread.] I'm not going anywhere... [It came as a whisper, and it came (from what she could see) as the truth. Words were important, and she would eventually say those same ones to him, but the promise of her staying meant even more to her in the moment.] And I really need to kiss you right now, but I'm a little freaked out about stepping through. Just in case...

[He leaned his head against the doorway, looking at her with his big brown eyes and enjoying the scent and feeling of her magic. It always reminded him of a church. Quiet with burning candles and dying flowers by the altar. The worry in his eyes settled a little, though he was still anxious about her not feeling the same. It was a stupid, needling thought. Something he knew was his age-old insecurity that told him you're never going to be good enough.

Eddie laughed quietly and then tried to guess if she wanted to try and come inside or stay out in the hallway. It was a difficult riddle and he didn't want to get it wrong. Even if he usually did.] Would you like to smooch out there instead? I can't say I've ever kissed an Endless. Felt up a little maybe. [He gave a smarmy smirk.]

[She liked the way he looked at her, the way that she could tell it wasn't just one part of her that he liked, but both of them. All of them. It made the fact that she'd regained her unearthliness at least a little easier to handle. It didn't have to be one or the other, and if their original door was going to be so stubborn as to reject her effort to make things "right", then they were going to have to deal with straddling those lines.

She grinned at his smirk, sparing a thought of how easily he helped to settle her worry about the new development of her existence.] Really? Which one of my siblings have you been groping? [Her eyes were bright with the question, and stayed warm with her next.] Did you want to kiss out here? [She took half a step back, the dark-church smell of her fading from the apartment and making her shiver just a bit as some of her humanity faded away.] Otherwise I it'd be nice to be home again... Maybe one here and the rest there? [She gestured back toward the apartment at 'there'.]

[Well, Eddie had to admit he was curious. He liked the symbolism of kissing her there and then leading her back to the apartment. A sort of acceptance of who she was while encouraging her to be more with him. That's how he saw the comic book shop and the apartment. A chance to be more for the both of them. He was less in Gotham with or without her. Here? He felt like a real person, like the kind Donna insisted all comic book characters had to be now that they were "real." His world would always be in between and constantly changing like the imperfect and unpredictable man that he was, but at least he knew Muerte would be a fixture in his life for a little longer.

He stepped forward and grabbed her waist, pulling her close for a kiss that was charged by both of their magic. She was death and he was what happened after. Even the hotel didn't know what to do with it and as he could feel himself vanish in her arms, he tugged her back through the door.] Good? [He asked against her lips and then pulled her into a solid hug, nose against her shoulder as he let her adjust to the change.]

[Whatever was in charge of their lives (existences?) had an interesting sense of humor, pairing the two of them up and giving them the powers they did. She'd been there before, being Endless when he was learning necromancy, but so much had happened in between, and he had a better grasp on it all now. It layered a sharp electricity under there kiss, a clash that was right and wrong at the same time. It buzzed along her awareness as she deepened the kiss, and even as she felt him begin to fade again. That tug around her waist propelled her forward, through the door and into their apartment with stumbling steps.

Humanity slammed back down around her like a bucket of water, sudden and then trickling along her senses. She wasn't sure if it was a good feeling or a bad feeling, and Eddie's arms around her just made it all the more intense. Eyes still closed from the kiss, she gasped as her breath burned in her lungs and her heart beat double-time for long seconds in order to start itself again. The beats were too hard as she tried to catch her breath, arms looped over Eddie's shoulders vital in keeping him close and keeping her standing on watery legs. Her hand shook as she laid it against the back of his neck, shaky breath against the side of his throat.] Shit... [She was overwhelmed, and the word came out almost in the way it did when they were in bed together - soft and on a breath that hitched.]

[Eddie for once didn't concern himself with whether or not what she was experiencing felt good or bad. If it was his fault or not. If he needed to do something different. All of that worrying was selfish even if it seemed pointed at her. It was about what he was doing instead of simply comforting her. No, Eddie understood he just needed to be there. And, this was strangely familiar in a way he couldn't quite place.] It's okay. [His arms around her body and across her back were firm, holding her up if her legs buckled.]

[Muerte clung to Eddie as he stood there, very glad to have the steady support of his arms around her. She managed to keep her feet, but it was a close thing, long moments before she was stable enough to not lean her near-full weight against him. The embrace shifted a little then, still close and still tight, but less about keeping her from falling. When she pressed against him, it wasn't about him being a brace for her weight, but to actually press against him.] Was that... [She paused just long enough to breathe out again, air strangely ticklish in her lungs.] That wasn't as weird for you as it was for me, was it? [Weird, but not bad. She'd decided that much, at least.]

Well, [He kissed the side of her head, stroking her hair for only a moment before pulling back to look at her.] I felt myself- ah. [Eddie still didn't have a good word for it. Ghostly was a bit too silly and ethereal made him sound pretentious.] Change. Kissing you.

[It took her a second to work through that, leaning her head on his shoulder while he stroked her hair and reluctantly pulling back when he did. She'd timed her breathing to his without even realizing it as she'd regained the need for oxygen, strangely in sync for the moment.] You can't be human if I'm not? [It was a twisted thought, and it made her frown.]

I think it's a little more nebulous than that. I think there's a chance you were never not Death at this point. [He shrugs though because it doesn't matter to him.] But, yes. If you're, well, if you're Endless I need to be punished. I'm just grateful it didn't take away my mind.

[She wanted to stay in his arms, but she also suddenly felt the need to move. Stepping away, she began to pace a short path back and forth.] But it felt... it was gone. All of it. [Turning, she almost pleaded with him, even though she knew that he wasn't the one in charge of whatever was happening to them.] No. [Her eyes sharpened and she frowned deeply at the thought of him needing to be punished.] Fuck that. [And then, without conscious though, a run of words that were very definitely not english, shifting back easily without any indication that she even realized she was doing it.] You don't need to be punished for anything, and Gotham can feast upon its own excremented souls before I go back, if that's the way it's going to be. [The shift back to human is perhaps a little rockier than expected...]

[Eddie just smiled, watching her pace. Being punished? Meant nothing to him. He was a criminal who had been thrown in Arkham. Being a ghost wasn't worse than that. He walked over to his computer chair and sat down, resting his chin on the palm of his hand.] You never found a replacement, did you? [It was the most obvious solution to him. If she really didn't want to be Death, someone else needed to take the scythe and robe. He considered it, swiveling the chair back and forth a little bit.] Did you like it? The Deathly thing?

[Still pacing a little, she shook her head.] No, I didn't think it was needed. There's something else there that governs over it. [And the thought, at the time, of choosing someone to step into shoes that had become too old for her, had not settled well on her mind. And maybe that was the reason it was all happening the way it was, but she couldn't think through it in the moment. Not with shifting back and forth, and not with Eddie being so calm about it. Part of her mind tried to tell her that maybe calm was the way to go, but she couldn't get a lock down on her emotions, not yet.

She was able to stop pacing though, sinking down to the floor in a surprisingly graceful fold of her legs, sitting cross-legged with her elbows on her knees, head in her hands. She looked so much smaller that way, hunched over and not nearly someone - something - that spread through the universe to be the ending force to life.] I don't know. It's not really about liking it. [She'd told him before - it wasn't like she got off on being the end to life. It just was what she was.]

That doesn't matter. It's our identity that matters. Unless you found Mort wandering the streets, you're the only Death that exists. [He shrugged and then felt a little bad for accepting all of this long before she did. After all, even as a teenager he didn't fight against the impossible, he did the smart thing and hid where he could be fleshy. So, now they were talking about the different worlds and she was freaking out. Not exactly his idea of what should happen after he confessed his love.

He watched her crumple to the floor and moved to touch her, but changed his mind. She needed space, right? Eddie stayed in his chair and watched her, unsure of how to comfort. If he should at all.]

[He was right. She knew that he was right, and yet it was taking her too long to catch up to him to accept it.] I'm sorry... [It came quiet and with a shake of her head.] I wanted this to work and now I find it's more complicated than I'd expected, and it makes me feel a little dumb...

[She caught his aborted movement out of the corner of her eye, and looked up at him from her place on the floor. She saw that slight uncertainty to his expression and frowned, trying to wade through everything swamping her mind at the moment to figure out where it was born in his own thoughts. The realization was there, but slow in coming.] I wanted it to be right. For both of us. So we didn't have to worry about what that world wanted. [It wasn't 'I love you', but that's where her thoughts grew from.

And she suddenly didn't want to be alone on the floor any longer. A quick thought, meant to take her across the room again, didn't merit any result, and the expression on her face was briefly baffled when she remained where she was. Then it was a flicker of annoyance before she began to move, up onto hands and knees as she crawled to lessen that space between them. It was awkward and not at all tantalizing, and she finally sat again when she was only a few feet from his chair. That lasted only a second before she scooted that last distance and leaned against the chair itself.]
