He hasn't even seen the burn. Stop nagging me. [He smiles up her because he knew she'd be annoyed when he said the word "nagging," and that's half the reason he said it. Leaning, he drops the rag to one side, his hands still filthy. Leaning forward, he puts two hands out to take her by the hips, gently, leaving prints on her clothing. He pulls her toward him, away from the bench.]

[As if by magic. The frown is instantaneous. Also superficial. With deliberate irritation, but swaying away from the bench toward him, dropping the phone on the workbench where it continues to glow and buzz.]

I'm not nagging you, he doesn't need to see it to know about it - oh! [Height differential abruptly taken away, balance on high heels requiring a center of gravity that stays above one spot. Catching herself with one hand on his good shoulder, her weight braced on his, her knee in between his.] You're trying to change the topic. [Trying very hard to sound stern. She's smiling. It spoils the effect.]

[He readjusts quickly so that her knee has room on the stool, and unlike her he's got the upper body training to essentially hold himself and her in place at the same time. It pulls at the skin of his arm and he gets a better hold on her with the hand attached to his good shoulder. His palm leaves a long smear of black up the side of her stomach. Enjoying the precarious balance, he looks up through the now diminished space between them.] No, you can stay on the topic, if you really want to. Just keep going. I'm listening. [Patently false schoolboy attention, complete with innocent blink.]

[Very much distracted by both the false innocence and being close enough to admire the length of his eyelashes when he blinks them at her. Enough not to notice the state of her shirt.] I was talking about the art. And Bruce. [Breathless.]

And the Duchamp, maybe I should make a list of what the museum is allowed and what needs to stay on the walls. [Her knee digs into the stool to find purchase, one high heel dangles off the tips of her toes and drops without ceremony to the floor.] I should do that now. [Making no move to go anywhere.]

[Noting the breathlessness with distinct smugness. His grin grows a little wider.] About art. I was listening. Duchamp. Cubist. [The sound of the shoe falling makes his blood heat. His pupils flex and he leans up to touch her mouth with his, eyes open, fingers increasing pressure to hold her up in front of him.] Riveting. Lists.

Finding it increasingly difficult to concentrate. Her hand slides up his shoulder and finds the back of his neck, sets four fingers against the pulse just under his ear. Said on an exhale, almost like a sigh:]Practical. [Her mouth is moving against his own.] I like to cover all the options. [Her back arches into the pressure rather than away from it; the contact is broken. As demure as is feasible when covered in engine grease and half in his lap.] What about the Picabia instead?

[He takes a breath in against her mouth, inhaling her taste.] You are so practical. You can have the Pickaba. [Slaughtering pronunciation. He tries to get a grip on her so he can move his other hand under her shirt, but he can't hold her with that arm and he hisses with pain and annoyance. A quick kiss against her lower lip, and then he's standing up, using one leg mostly and awkwardly picking her up and pushing her against the workbench. Something important clanks down to the ground on the other side. He kisses her again, but this time it's a longer one. He pushes slick filthy hands under her shirt.]

[She thinks about correcting him. About Cubism, and the art hanging in the board-room downstairs and then the art is forgotten. Her balance is off (one high heeled shoe abandoned on the floor beneath the work-stool) and she kicks off the other one as well because it's easier. The kiss is brief enough that when the next comes, her fingers are tangled hard in the hair at the back of his neck and she kisses him the way she thought about it all the times before, impatient and hasty, licking into his mouth and tasting.

Her stomach muscles leap involuntarily at the first palm that skids over bare skin beneath the now-filthy shirt, and her fingers tighten on the back of his neck. She's forgotten Cubism. She's forgotten the MOMA, her hips are nudged back against the workbench and she lifts her knee to nudge the outside of his thigh to pull him closer. The skirt is protesting but it's already covered in grease.]

[He's honestly surprised. Pepper has always been so proper, extremely restrained, interminably professional. She keeps doing sexy things that make his ears roar. Every time she does something like loose a shoe or lick his lips, his whole brain goes, what? Is that her foot?

There's a lot more kissing, graduating into making out and, to Tony's smug delight, a lot of groping. He pushes her shirt up by catching it in his knuckles until the tips of his fingers can reach her bra, and he stops, drawing circles on her skin and outlining her ribs with his hands. They take a break to breathe.] Um, next time you talk to me about art, we find a bed.

[He glances down from her lips toward the taut lines of her skirt.] Wow. [Stop to think.] Wait, do I want to say--yes, I do. Wow.

[He reaches an arm back, but that turns out to be a mistake. This time, he sighs.] You have the worst timing. [He puts a streak of grease in the lock of hair over her ear with two fingers.]

[There hasn't been a lot of thinking past Cubism. Not a lot of reflection of circumstance - the lab does not feature highly on Pepper's list of anything, or next steps because the next step is not obvious until it is. The breathlessness thing has stuck around, and when they peel apart, her pupils are ink-dark and wide. Something in the region of her stomach dissolves to liquid the minute he mentions bed - and she comes back to the surroundings with the certainty of a metal lab bench digging into her backside.]

I didn't come here for this. [Distracted. Extremely distracted. Her knee lowers, the seams of the skirt stop protesting and he isn't held fast any longer.] My timing? [A wrinkle of forehead, the beginning of protest. She's starting to think. Thinking doesn't mix overly well with making out in the lab.]

Why is it my timing?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]atomic26

Because if you had good timing I would be able to pick you up and find a bed. [A show of thinking about it, eyes moving vaguely upward and shifting.] Maybe that's what I should have done when I picked you up the other day. Aliens then bed. Things went wrong only when I didn't put you in bed.

[He looks back at her eyes and smiles a small smile, one of those ones that is both distant and authentic. In some ways they're better than grins. He awkwardly readjusts his weight, tapping his foot on the ground and trying not to pull the skin of the burn as he shifts back onto the good leg.] Next time you come, it should be for this. [He just sort of let the innuendo go where it would, calmly. His hands drop to her thighs. Most of the grease is gone now, so his thumbs just leave faint trails of grime over the fabric. He doesn't move it, just strokes it. ]

[A very deliberate contemplation of it she allows to be obvious. The flush that began just beneath her throat somewhere between the beginning of the kissing and the groping and climbed to her cheeks has washed the skin there faintly pink. ] You had an invasion to get back to. And then in need of medical attention. You're still in need of medical attention. This isn't resting.

[There's an equally obvious although less deliberately so readjustment of her weight and balance until it's somewhere between the ball of her foot and the lab bench and taken away from him and the hand still curled into his hair, nails against his scalp, slides free, palming down over his chest until the blue light spills between her spread fingers. Then she looks down.] What is that? [Belatedly; rag and hands added together and:] You're paying the dry-cleaning bill before there's a next time.

[Grumbling.] I am not in need of medical attention. I'm fine. They'll change the bandage a few times and it'll be an [...sudden closing of his throat, which he opens with a cough,] ugly scar and then I'll be fine. [Squeezing her knee gently.]

[Tony sighs when she takes some of her weight off the bad arm that he is not eating in a sling. ] It's anti-sieze lube. [Looking up into her eyes and raising one eyebrow, daring her.] For nuts and bolts. Pistons. That kind of thing. [An involuntarily shudder of pleasure as her nails scrape the back of his scalp. It makes him crazy when women do that. Not so much with the reactor, but when Pepper touches him it's not that big of a deal. She'd seen it.]

[Arguing. Albeit lacking heat.] If you let them take care of it maybe the scarring will be less.

[The cough is received with quiet consternation and a look that is arguably verging on 'you are very silly about all the things and I will have to explain'. It's fond. There's a kiss, quick and light put to the corner of his jaw but she draws back and laughs. Pepper's laughter is uninhibited in the lab. It's nothing like polite boardroom jokes and polite boardroom appropriate responses. It echoes on metal and on bare floor and she misses a couple of words in the explanation.]

It's all over my skirt. [Her hand stills on his chest, she's noticed the reaction. She makes a demonstrated mental note.]

[Tony just doesn't answer about the scarring, and he lets it drift away into the obscure conversation topic pile where it belongs. A big grin when he makes her laugh. Tony's good at telling the truth in that way.] It's all over you. [He points it out by dropping his gaze to her shirt and touching his tongue to his lips--for once not an intentional gesture. Both hands compulsively flex over her thighs and then he abruptly lets her go.] You are to imagine this as being ridiculously sexy. But now I'm sitting down again. [And he does, looking around for the stool, trying to hold his leg up, obviously wishing the healing part was all over.]

[The shirt will wash. The skirt won't - but there are dry-cleaners. Her chin drops, she pulls on the edge of the shirt outward and away from her body to try and assess the worst of the damage, sees a distinct handprint-ish smear, and gives up.]

I'm sure Doctor Banner would approve you sitting down. You didn't have to get up in the first place. [She slides down from the workbench, toes first, then heels and begins to look for her shoes.] I've imagined. I think I have enough to go on. [The look over her shoulder (and through a lot of mussed hair) is deliberate, if he catches it. Knowing.]

[Tony might be secretly hoping she bends down to find the shoes. He nudges one of them over under the workbench, and he is a terrible person for enjoying his handprint on her clothing. His whole body glows with casual mischief.] I definitely had to get up. [He watches her move, catches the look over her shoulder, and is surprised into a pleased smile.] Yeah?

[She has one shoe, dangling off the tips of her fingers, the filament of the heel wickedly long. But one shoe is not enough, even if her skirt seams are crooked and the shirt is beyond excuse. Nudging her toe under the workbench to see if she can wiggle for it] You could have stayed sitting down. [You can hear the smile, even with her face turned away.] I would have come to you. [Locating the missing shoe, the skirt so ruined now it's destined for the trash, kneeling to retrieve it.] I didn't leave that there. You're a terrible man. [Definitely smiling.]

[This whole idea of her coming to him is absolutely delicious. He savors the concept for a little while as she searches for her shoe. He tilts his head to get a better view.] I am terrible. I am so terrible. I feel bad about it. Really bad.

[Wry.] You're so broken up about it. I can tell. [The second shoe is retrieved, and the first shoe stepped into. She puts a hand on the workbench to balance and the same thing repeated. Now extremely tall. Sweetly (never bodes well):] If you'd done as the doctor told you, you would have been in bed in the first place.

[With an effort to keep his jaw in place.] It gets boring when you're not in it. [This is so much more fun with Pepper. Less like he's fighting with a stranger and waiting for them to leave, and more like... he's waiting for her to stay.]

[Both heels secured now. Staccato on bare floor as she approaches him. She's trying to fix her hair and oblivious to the streak of grime in it.] It's supposed to be boring. It's restful. [A smile. She kisses his cheek - very briefly - and straightens.] Let Banner check the burn and don't be impossible. [She's looking to retrieve her coffee.]

[His pupils realign ever so slightly from her face to look at her hair and then focus again on her eyes. The little boy smile lingers. He reaches up and touches her face, the lock of hair, and her arm as she draws away from him, a drifting touch.] I don't need Banner to look at it. The other medic is taking care of it. Stop fussing.

[A softer look at him, less certain of herself. There's a hesitancy as she pulls back. Maybe she knows what to do with Tony behaving outrageously, less so the more naked affection.] The other medic will listen to you when you tell them you're doing everything they tell you to. I need to go. Change my shirt.

Pepper. I... am... fine. Please stop haranguing me.
