Roof, Hell's Kitchen: Clem, Bucky & Matt

[Clementine, she wasn't real pleased. It wasn't the broken window, and it wasn't even the fact she'd need to get some alarms installed. No, Clementine, she was cranky over Matt fighting folks and hurting himself up again. Man didn't have any call to be up fighting, and she didn't know where he'd found whoever called her, but she reckoned that man was just as fool as Matt was.

Suffice it to say, the woman wasn't real pleased as she got off the subway and made her way to the building she called home. She called Graham on the way, telling the man she needed glass mending and alarms installed, and then she climbed her way on up to the roof.

She'd come straight from Penny's, and she was still dressed lazy. Pink running shorts with PINK written on the ass in bubble-white, and grey FDNY shirt, her hair piled high on her head, and designer sunglasses perched on that bleached blonde.

Truth was, Matt probably smelled her soon as she pushed that roof door open. Chanel No. 5, azaleas, and she still had the medkit in her hand, seeing as she'd grabbed it to splint Penny's toe.

If it was possible for a thin woman to look like maelstrom, then Clementine, she fit the bill just then.] I thought you were staying quiet and letting them move on. [Which she said before she even saw Matt any.]

[Matthew smelled her before she entered the building, actually, and that was through a throat full of blood. He made a visible effort to collect himself before she actually appeared, groaning with effort to pull himself more into proper sitting with is bare back against the duct. The soldier would not have heard her steps quite so early, but two seconds after Matthew pulled off the blindfold, her steps sounded, and out she came, and with a mouth full of vinegar, too. It was obvious from Matthew's flattened hair and compressed eyelashes that the mask had been there moments before, but he stuffed it behind him anyway. His expression acquired a distinctly shifty look. You could almost see him trying to decide how best to appease Clem's temper--this while he rasped out every breath and tried to stem the blood from the torn stitches in side and thigh.

He opened his mouth to say something Irish and charming, but she got there first. A bard's profusion of innocence then followed.] They searched you out, lady. Through the door they came. I could not but defend thy home. [He tried to sound incredibly gallant about it, but since the unfocused eyes were directed somewhere over her head and there wasn't much of his face in the purple, bloody mess, it ended up rather pathetic.

Matthew immediately tried to unload some of her anger on the nearest target.] This good gentleman assisted. [He coughed, and visibly prevented himself from spitting more blood in front of her.]

[He had left the mask on his new acquaintance, making no move to pull it off, and was a little surprised to see Matthew remove it as his friend arrived. So he cared what she thought about him, which meant they had a relationship that went at least a little past sewing up wounds and putting him up in her apartment. That small act clinched several assumptions for him.

Clem, as she approached, would have seen him straighten a little, checking to be sure she was who they'd expected before relaxing again, though not entirely. He'd done his best to compress Matt's wounds and check his vitals, after briefly disappearing to clean the stairs of spattered blood. While Matt was charming the pants off his understandably angry friend, he was watching her, assessing. She was casually dressed and beautiful, clean and professional in all aspects of her appearance outside her current outfit. This wasn't a poor woman, and the FDNY T-shirt answered to her occupation. She had said she worked across the street, and he felt a brief moment of cognitive dissonance. Women were firefighters?

Bucky shot Matt a look that would obviously go unnoticed when he directed Clem's attention to the next warm body.] Was fighting when I walked by. [Bucky had come out of the fight relatively unscathed, saved for some bruises hidden by his clothes, but he'd been lucky enough to show up when Matt had already done the heavy lifting.] Can I help? [He didn't like just standing around watching somebody else work, despite the fact that, for whatever reason, he had no fear at all that Matt wouldn't survive this.]

[Taking that mask off, it didn't do a lick when your hair was all patted down like you'd just taken the thing off, and Clementine looked at Matt, all shifty like he was, and she exhaled real hard through her nose. Was only a second later, and she was looking at him different. Not with her exasperation, but something more fitting for an ambulance, taking in new injuries, bleeding patterns, figuring stitches torn and things she needed to fuss over. She made a real quick perusal, like they were trained to do at scenes, and then she looked again, slower. She ignored that damn man standing there, off to the side, though she could feel him looking at her. But he was secondary, and that rasping and bleeding from Matt was more important.

Right about that time, she realized that rasping should come with some blood gurgling at his lips, and the man was still upright, and that man shouldn't be able to sit up on his own steam, duct against his back or no damn duct against his back.]

You couldn't but defend my home. [She repeated it real south, and she moved forward crouched as he coughed. And, there was the blood she'd been wondering after earlier.

Crouching, she pulled a stethoscope from her bag, and she didn't bother warming the thing before sliding it beneath whatever was left of Matt's shirt and listening to see how bad that lung was punctured.

She looked over at the helpful gentleman in question as she listened, and she didn't believe for a damn second this man was walking by, casual.] Don't know if you can help any yet. If that's punctured, we're getting you to a hospital. [She said it to Matt, sure and sturdy, listening, and she was having trouble finding the gurgle real well, though she knew it was there. It was like the damn thing went and got smaller as she listened, and her blue eyes narrowed some.] If it ain't punctured, you can help me move him downstairs.

[Clementine, she clearly didn't sense a lick of trouble down there. She'd survived zombies; she wasn't real scared of local thugs.]

[Matthew didn’t have the respect for his identity that the other would-be heroes of this world did. Matthew came from a place where the closest facsimile of a face was a crude woodcut illustration drawn by enterprising artists who hadn’t been the people doing the seeing. He had no real conception of how accurate a photograph or a camera could be, and in his own mind only he could accurately identify any individual when in their presence a second time. Factual concepts like these had still given him a miss; he knew what a camera was and what a photograph was, but not their function and use in this modern society. He heard the digital sound of snapping cameras in the alley below, the responding officer’s handheld, probably, and wondered at it. These people took photographs of everything.

Matthew was, and always would be, contentedly oblivious to any dirty looks shot his way. He did not underestimate the fine chance that had brought the soldier to his assistance. One might think God was in charity with him. If so, He was probably the only one. Matthew knew that Clementine was in a mood with him, but he was hoping he could talk her out of it if he survived the night.]

Ay. They came at your door. I think it certain they followed me in thy ambulatory vehicle. [It was sometimes difficult to remember that Matthew could be dead serious while sounding like a bad stage actor. His tone was thick, and he tried to breathe shallow. He heard the gurgle in his chest too—but he had heard it before, and survived it.] A few days and ’twill heal.

[He used the mask to press down on the knife wound and reached out in her general direction, taking her arm and obviously expecting that she would assist him into standing.] They know your place. We must hide in mine ’til I may put things aright. James must come as well, to protect you should they steal after. [He gave "James" a hopeful look. Or he sent in his general direction.]

A few days and 'twill heal. [Repeating things, that was real indicative of Clementine's mood. Still crouching, but she did move quick when Matt reached for her. The fool man would get himself to standing, she reckoned, whether she was inclined to help or not. He'd fall himself right over, and they'd be worse off than they already were. And that silent man on over there, he wasn't saying a thing, and that silence wasn't making Clementine feel any better 'bout a damn thing.]

Me and James, we'll get you to your place. I'll get you patched right, and he can stay and protect you from anything that comes.

[Here, standing now, she shot James a real long look, because James best not be sassing her just 'bout now. She was already trying to figure how a punctured lung could fix itself in a few days, and she was turning that 'round in her head, trying to suss whether she believed it was literal, or whether it was just Matt sounding like some Irish charmer off a damn stage and saying lines to make her calm.]

The only thing you're putting aright is that lung, and don't you argue with me any. I got my kin coming to fix the window and install a real nice alarm system. [That was said like there was no arguing any about it.] I got work, and I can't hide somewhere else for a real long time, but I'll come with you until you're wrapped and settled. How far are we going?

[She glanced at James, and her real-perfect brow was lifted high. Maybe James knew where they were going, seeing as the blind man couldn't know real well, could he? So, James that just happened to be walking on by, make yourself real helpful some.]

[James didn't have a clue where they were going, any more than he knew how Matt was going to heal a punctured lung, or how he'd fought so well when his vague look in his general direction confirmed his assumption of blindness. There were a lot of impossible things in this world, and a probably guess said he'd stumbled on one. One who talked like all the books he hadn't read in school.

He didn't have Matt's hearing, but he'd seen the police enter the alley below, checking carefully over the edge. He turned back to her when he heard his name again, after listening, mutely, to the two talk back and forth. It would be safer for her to come with them and stay, especially when the faction behind the thugs in the alley still wasn't clear.] They might have friends to send back here. Friends that'll be looking for him. [She seemed upset with both of them and the situation in general, the kind of woman who didn't brook talking back. That was good, because if her friend Matt had dragged her as deep into this as it looked like, she'd need that spine to get herself clear of it again.

Clearly the decision was up to her, but leaving her here with nothing more than an alarm system to protect her made him uneasy, since he knew firsthand just how easy they were to get around. He knelt down, however, and slid his stiff left arm under Matt's again, just as he had to help him up to the roof. He stood with him, letting the other man lean his weight on him without buckling at the knees, bending, or showing any sign of strain, solidly rooted and steady.

Staying with a stranger could be dangerous. The odds were just as good that he would bring danger on Matt than that the reverse might happen. And wasn't it strange that she was willing to trust him with her friend, her lover, her whoever he was to her, after meeting him only a minute ago?

It could be that he was suspicious of everyone beyond reason, but he knew there was no edge to conspiracy, no level it couldn't wrap to. These people seemed unrelated to anything in his own life, a little too strange a pair to be someone's cover story. Still.] I'll stay there. [It didn't matter to him where he slept. Now it was more about curiosity, and wanting to know who he'd stepped in to help. It was one of the first acts of altruism he could remember performing. There was no reason to do it if he wasn't going to follow his curiosity, too.]

[With her aid and the soldier's in turn, Matthew stood up. His breathing was still wet and gasping, but most of his wounds had stopped bleeding--or at least, gushing. He wasn't leaving behind a pool like he had when she had found him in that junkyard, and while he was certainly not at full alert, he wasn't continually passing out the way he had in her ambulance. His trust in her was obviously very strong, and James... well, James had a strong heartbeat and ten times the opportunity to kill him. If he hadn't then, he wouldn't now. As far as it went, he had Matt's trust there, too. The limping did not get better, though. The stitches, now torn flesh, hurt him, and the ribs definitely need to put back where they were supposed to be so he could get on with that healing thing he kept saying was going to happen.

That he was sure would happen.

That he prayed would happen. Yes, praying was certainly a good idea.]

Ay, that they do. [This to the soldier, who obviously knew something of spy and military matters.] Many. They are a gang, a mob. [He hacked something up that sounded nasty, and shifted all his weight onto the soldier. He thought it would be better to die on such a man, if it became necessary. James was obviously used to it.] Bitter pills and burnt powders be their trade and children their vessels.

[His hand convulsed on James' shoulder. He lowered his voice slightly, but Clementine could hear it, for sure.] This night's business shall not pass their notice. Take my purpose, should I fail the Clementine's protection. I should not leave her worse than she found me. If I live, you may make worse friends with this favor than Matthew Murdock.

Thinkest thou we may make our way unseen? I may borrow your coat, having lost mine. [Lost, right. He never had time to put on a shirt. Or shoes, come to it. Paused for the mask though, didn't he? He had it wadded up against his side.]

[James, he was real helpful. He said friends of the bad folks would come, and she figured he was right, because she wasn't fool enough to think this wasn't going to ripple all the Hell over her life.] Friends'll come, sugar, but I ain't going to hide for the rest of my life. My kin, he'll make it safe plenty, and I'm on a dispatch line, firefighters are right out my window all night, all day. I'm not letting some thugs control me any. [Maybe that was a whole lot of dangerous bravado, but she'd lived with the rotting for near a year, and she'd done her daddy in, and she'd survived that Tower and all them nazis inside. She'd survive this too, and maybe she wasn't realizing it wasn't near the same, folks breaking in, criminals when you weren't expecting and her not bad on the eyes. But she didn't like thinking 'bout being controlled by fear, and she wasn't showing any just then.

But James said he was willing to stay with Matt, and he helped him up easy, and that won Clementine over, even if the man didn't have a lick of charm to him. Time with Matt might fix that right up, because even looking like his face was some real beat-up steak, the man was still trying to charm her, and she wasn't no fool; she could tell.

Still, she let him go on doing it.] "The Clementine" is going to be just fine. She's got firefighters, and she's got boys that wear plaid regular, and she's got her own damn gun. James is going to take care of you, honey, not me. Least for now.

[She waited for James to hand his coat on over, and she looked on over the edge of the roof, looking for any dangerous seeming folks below.] Matt, sugar, how far we going? Whether we can make it unseen or not, that depends on how far we got to go. I can borrow us a car across the way, if it's far. [She considered.] I got a place we can go in Queens if need be, but that's real far. I don't want you moving that far, Matt, even if you swear up and down I don't got to worry any over that gurgle.

[Truth was, she really just wanted to get the man cleaned up and laid out, so she could stitch and listen better than she could up on this roof with the thin air and germs all over.]

[He told her where it was, by address. A few blocks away, short as the crow flies or over rooftop, but winding by street and foot.]

[Matthew quested with one hand to his left, away from the soldier, in the direction of Clementine's heartbeat, heat, and place in the air. He led with the back of his hand, his knuckles, really, with fingers loose, because he had learned a long time ago not to quest for anything with his fragile fingers leading. The gesture, as such, was an almost limp, passive movement, but once he found her arm, he flipped his hand over and caught her up in a grip so hard that he felt that if he let her go she might fall a long way down.]

Come. I will stop them, so you may return, and be as you were before.

[He let her go, and muttered,] Alack, that I bring ladies to the brink of arms and fire. No more places, allies to fall. [He took a step to quick, a rib went the wrong way, and he went white under the blood and grime.] Murrain on't. God. [He glanced at Clementine, and added, with great gravity.] Fuck. The lady may be right, my bones are misaligned.

[James didn't have a coat to hand over, but he did have a sweatshirt, which would serve the purpose just fine. He took it off and slid Matt's arm through one hole without asking for permission, letting him slide the rest on himself once he had it over one shoulder. It would help to keep him warm and disguise the wounds, at leas. Without the sweatshirt on, he had only a thin t-shirt underneath. As he shouldered Matt's weight, the muscles under the thin cotton slid and tensed like cables under his skin, thick and solid.

He thought Clem was brave, but stupid. Living your life without fear was good in theory, but then the things you feared came in through your window in the middle of the night and slit your throat, because they weren't afraid of the police, or your alarm, and it was the paranoid ones who survived longest, the ones who succumbed to fear. Of course, that left them open in other ways. He didn't comment on her choice, but that charmless mouth took on a grim cant.

Matt was serious, pained, and strange. But he liked him. Something about the flat swearing and the strange language that he still couldn't pinpoint.] Don't do that then. [It was so dry it wasn't actually obvious as a joke. He took on more of his weight after he went so white, and moved toward the stairs. They couldn't very well exit through the alley, so -] Back way out of building? [The fire escape would have been ideal, but not with Matt in this condition.]

[Clementine, she wasn't expected the touch to her arm, and she sure wasn't expecting to get tugged up into that grip. Not that she had any trouble being touched any. It wasn't real Murphy, being touched by people weren't kin, but she'd gotten a whole lot better 'bout it here, even if it was still something she was working on some. But Matt's grip was real tight, and even she could tell it was worrying.] Relax some. We'll get you feeling better, and my place isn't even getting worked on until next week. I'll stay put where you're going until then. [She was being real obliging, because she could get herself a hotel just as easy, but she figured she might as well stay and make sure this didn't happen again any, at least not until that gurgling ended.

She lifted a hand to touch Matt's face, but the damn man was swelled and purple all over, and she settle for fingers just behind his ear as he let her go. He was fussing about allies, and she was about to fuss back, but he cursed then, and she had to muffle a laugh to face the more serious reality that he was worse off than he claimed to be.

And maybe she was still looking over at James' metal arm some, and she wondered how in the heck she, of all people, had gotten herself so tangled with men from comic books.

But what mattered then was moving, and she pointed toward the back exit.] It'll take a few turns to get to where he said, but it ain't far. I'm guessing you got some kind of strength could lift a mule, so you just go following me. [She walked on ahead, down and out, and she only stopped to talk over her shoulder once.] Don't you go dropping him.

[To Matthew, the walk seemed interminable. The loose bones kept driving into his flesh, and while his external wounds had stopped bleeding, the internal ones kept reopening, and it was a stronger power than most humans possessed that kept him upright and walking. He gave up talking before they were even a quarter of the way there, but he guided them, usually with a weak push or pull on the soldier's arm, in the right direction. His eyes weren't even all the way open, he was navigating primarily by instinct and scent. It was Saint's chemical sting, the developing fluid for his square images on the wall, that drew him on. It had done so several times before; it was a distinctive scent, one that was not common in that part of the City.

The two-bedroom was up a set of stairs, and someone had left the street door open. Matthew was panting and his lips were red by the time they mounted the stairs, and at the last one he produced a key for Clem to open the door into the empty living room. Neither Matthew nor Saint claimed much in the way of furniture, and there was some small clutter along the edges of the room where Matthew might never notice when they were in his path. They were fairly clean, the both of them, but it was clear which room was Matthew's, and which was excessively papered with photos no blind man could see.

Getting them there, somewhere secure and safe from which they did not have to move, had been Matthew's only focus, and once he took a step in the door, he stopped trying entirely. All his weight came off his feet and down heavy on the soldier's arm.]

[He tucked the arm behind Matt's back and under his shoulders, which did a good job disguising it to the naked eye. If anyone happened to notice the three of them limping along, they'd need to turn around again to see the expanse of scuffed steel along Matt's shoulders, and, stiff as it was, it could still pass for a prosthetic. As far as Clem was concerned, though, all he could do was keep a close eye on her, and watch for tails over the next few days. It would be obvious pretty quickly if she was anything more than she said she was. Still, at her stern request that he not drop Matt came the unexpected fragment of forgotten manners:] No ma'am.

[The flecks of blood on Matt's lips were what drove him onward. He was strong enough the the man's weight didn't wear on him much during the long walk to the walk-up. He kept his eyes up and scanning for witnesses. He'd faked the move of carrying a drunk friend home enough times, but still, there was a moment of quiet observation as they passed the edge of the alley and moved beyond.

True to his word, when they stepped into the apartment and Matt's weight turned dead and dropped, he didn't let him go. He grunted and hoisted him more firmly onto his shoulders, half-dragging him in the direction of the nearest door, guessing at a bedroom. He didn't pick him up by the legs - no need to risk opening those wounds any deeper - and he carried him with his legs almost off the ground until they reached the bed. He laid him in it slowly, on his back.] Does he need blood? [Then he was out of the room, going for towels and water to clean him up, raiding the cabinet for medical supplies.]

[Clementine barely looked at the space they were walking into. She was too damn concerned with how long the walk was, with how Matt was doing 'neath his skin. This whole damn thing felt irresponsible to her in a way that made her mouth draw itself straight into a line, and she was tense as nuns gone to sin by the time they were inside the place, and it screaming bachelor real loud and in all the normal ways.

She waited until James got Matt onto the bed, and she stood in the room, arms crossed and her expression real sour. There was blood on Matt's mouth again, and she didn't like how he looked any. Thing was, she knew the man wasn't going to like what she had to say, but wasn't a chance in Hell of her not saying it. She gave it a real long second, though, because James asked after Matt needing blood, and that was already going through her head.

She crossed the space, and after a hand pressed careful to Matt's forehead, she fished out her wrist cuff and checked the man's pressure, looking to see if it was dropping low on account of blood loss. She could go hunting for some O Rh D negative blood in her bus; they always kept some, on account of not having time to type-and-cross at the scene, but it wouldn't do any good if he was bleeding inside.] Won't do any good to give him blood and not stop what's bleeding. [Clem, she wasn't so much worried about his external injuries. It was what she couldn't see that fussed her.

And she didn't like that low blood pressure any. She looked down at the man on the bed.] I got to call my doctor friend, Matt, honey. I can't not. You listening? There's too much bleeding, too much moving 'round inside, and your pressure's way too low.

[Matthew, coming from a world in which tainted blood was drained from the sickly, misheard the suggestion of blood. It was probably a good thing, because the idea that they would put someone else’s blood in him probably would not go well. So far, he had been extremely complicit with Clementine’s wishes, as the majority of them had to do with bandages and various electronic devices that went (forgive the metaphor) over his head. The medical supplies in his room consisted of a great deal of bloody bandages of unknown age, a great number of fresh bandages that looked extremely new (and may or may not have been torn from sheets), a sewing kit with a disturbingly large and unclean needle, and a very large bottle of generic-brand aspirin. Plus a bottle of liquor without a label.

Saint could have a box of band-aids in the kitchen cupboard and he’d still be better equipped than Matthew.

Now that he was flat, he was conscious again, and staring up toward the ceiling as he listened to his breath rasp through his body. ]

No friends. Would I had hardened heart enough before this to keep these deeds to myself. No doctor friends.

[He closed his eyes.]

[Bucky stood back from the bed. Medicine, fixing people, that wasn't where his skills lay. But he knew how to patch someone in the field, and he knew how to get medical supplies on mission where necessary. If Matt wouldn't see a doctor or go to a hospital, which he could understand, then he was probably going to need blood and a couple other things besides.

The scant medical supplies in the bathroom cabinet and the rough items in the room, they wouldn't be enough. He stood at the door, watching Matt rasp to Clem, watching his eyes shut.]

Can get to a hospital. Get him what he needs. [It was an offer, with no shred of concern that he'd get caught doing so.]

[Clem's bag was real well stocked, and not because she carried it like that frequent; she'd just come from Penny and a broken toe, and she had all kinds of triage supplies in. They'd be fine, and she could sent James on over to her bus if she needed more, just a block or so down. But she sat there, watching the man on the bed, breath rasping, and she didn't send James running right off. She wasn't real surprised Matt didn't want a doctor, neither, but that was still up for debate, far as Clem was concerned.

And she'd be the one deciding. Not the bleeding man on the bed, and not the man standing and fretting.

She didn't bother none with any of those bad sewing supplies. She opened her kit, and she pulled out things for suturing, clean out of plastic wrap. A bottle of water and some pills for pain and infection, and she held the pills out careful, not wanting Matt to sit up in order to drink any. Thumb over the bottle's mouth, she helped him get the pills in, even if he complained plenty.] Just like before, sugar. Nothing that's going to do a thing that's bad to you.

[She sat back, and she listened, but she didn't say what she was thinking; they'd haul him to a damn hospital if that breathing got any more watery.] I'm going to clean and stitch while you're dozing. James here will play nurse. [She forced that reassuring smile into her voice, the one that didn't sound forced any.] He looks like he'd make a real pretty nurse if he cleaned up some. Maybe get him some nice clothes. Wouldn't hurt you to get some thing nice to wear too. [All this while she cut the fabric left on his shirt and waited for him to fade off into unconsciousness for her. Wouldn't be real long with that pill, and then she could get to working.]
