Roosevelt ER, Marvel: Clem, Dec & Mikey
[After the last injured person was dragged out of the rubble of Stark Tower, the men and women of Engine 26 had their own looking after to do. Which explained why they were all roped off at the ER of Roosevelt Hospital in Hell's Kitchen, being treated real careful for smoke inhalation and burns, coughing up fumes and all acting like there wasn't nothing worse than a papercut between the whole damn bunch.

Clem was done being fussed at, and all she wanted was a real long shower and something cool and sweet to drink, but the nurse that fussing with stitches at Clem's temple was saying the doctor wanted X-rays, just to be real sure she wasn't concussed, and Clem groaned and hopped off her hospital stretcher (after threatening real loud to call Penny) and went looking for folks to fuss over while she waited for someone to put her right damn back where she'd escaped from.

Her blues had been replaced by FDNY sweats in grey, and she padded on bright yellow socks with traction dots on the bottom.]

[Mikey had a litany of bumps and bruises -- he'd been in one of the staircases when it had collapsed -- and fuck he was sure he'd dislocated a shoulder. Or broke it. Or something. All he knew was that by the time he'd reached Clem up on the sixth floor to evacuate everyone else, his right arm hung limp next to him, his mask was shattered, and that grazed wound was bleeding profusely. Just another day on the job. Minus the whole working with superheroes to save Tony Stark's tower. Holy shit.

Perched atop a stretcher in the hallway, he allowed the nurse and PA to look him over without little fussing. Maybe a pout here and there, or a hiss of pain when they knead into a bruise. And yes, something was wrong with his shoulder, and they would need to do an x-ray to be sure. Grumbling, in his sweat-soaked shirt and blue scrub pants provided by the ER staff, he looked down the hall while they nurse went to track down an x-ray machine and a doctor.]

Clem! [And if people could wag a tail, his would be whipping back and forth excitedly. His grimace transformed into a grin, and he tilted his head to the side.] Shouldn't you be tied to a stretcher somewhere getting your brain fixed?

[She didn't need to look in order to tell who was hollering her way. Carroll had a voice no one could mistake, and she'd been real glad to hear it plenty of times today. On her yellow-dotted hospital-issue socks, she padded on over and stopped beside his stretcher. Her greys were too big, belonging to some fireman long gone from the house and carried over just on account of being clean, and Clem didn't look much like a woman that had just spent the night shooting nazis in the head like they were dead things walking. The bandage on her head bled red through white some, but the woman with the raging headache, she smiled easy.]

You're glad I'm here keeping you from pouting at the damn nurse, and we both know it. [Her voice was smoke-inhalation hoarse, and she nudged Carroll's good shoulder soft, not wanting to hurt him any.] Thanks for coming looking for me. [She looked over her shoulder, around.] You seen my ornery cuss of a brother anywhere yet? [And even though she didn't think Carroll had any folks in Marvel, she followed up quick.] Your folks all make it through fine?

[After the mayhem at Stark Tower, the hospital seemed crowded with emergency room intake threatening to breach capacity. Dedicated civil servants kept the body count low, but the floor was still brought in for injuries and smoke inhalation. The fighters of Engine 26 were among them now that the smoke had cleared, and Declan wasn't excited about it. His voice could be heard from somewhere further down the hall, inside one of the little rooms for triage assessment. Irritation made the accent that he'd spent most of his adult life suppressing sneak back in] I do not need a damned crutch!

[Despite what Declan said, he was limping when he made it out to the hall, and the young nurse that followed behind him was tsking and teasing. She promised that she'd give him a lollipop if he'd follow doctor's orders, take the crutch, and stop being a grouch. Declan's gruff expression said plainly enough that he didn't find her commentary humorous. He was sweatstained, his hair was matted from the helmet, and his eyes seemed like dark hollows due to exhaustion and pain. Back in the stairwell at Stark's, he'd twisted his knee while carrying a body out. Navigating the rubble, he'd misjudged his footing, so now his old injury was aggravated and swelling fast despite his protests of being 'fine.' He was still wearing the dark blue cotton of his Engine 26 t-shirt and the loose jeans he'd had on beneath his turnout gear. He'd refused the comfort and cleanliness of hospital garb because it felt like a commitment to stick around when all he wanted was to go home and take a pill.

When the nurse finally threatened to seek out his superior if Declan didn't sit down and await a doctor's clearance, Declan sank into an open wheelchair near Mikey's stretcher and tried not to sigh with relief. He glanced between Clementine and Mikey in silence, assessing that they had all of their limbs intact.

Then, a word tossed out like a stingy man's scrap of bread to be shared between them.] Alright?

What are you talking about, I'm a big, tough goddamn firefighter, I don't pout. [But the grin was still there, and it was all guilt, no innocence. His shoulder hurt like a bitch, and the stitches they'd put in that wound on his other arm stung, too. Screw whichever Nazi-Hydra dude shot at him. Seriously not cool, dude. This was totally gonna mess with his game -- whatever game that was. But, he nudged Clem back regardless, and he shifted a little so that there was space on the stretcher for her.]

But if you promise to kiss it better, maybe I'll pout a lot less. [A big, cheesy wink and a grin. All in good fun. Mostly. He eyed the wound on her head, and his mouth dipped in concern.] You better let them patch you up right, peach. Who else is gonna sexually harass me if your brain goes all gooey? [Underneath all of that was real concern. Sure, it'd only been about a month since he'd arrived here, and he had his siblings, but the fire house really was like his second family. He was eternally grateful to have a place there. Before he could continue, however, the commotion down the hall grabbed his attention. And there he was, Clem's ornery cuss of a brother, and Mikey grinned again. Declan reminded him of Raph some days, and god he missed Raph.]

Well, look at who the cat dragged in. [He too assessed and decided the three of them came out as unscathed as possible. At least they didn't lose any limbs. At least they still had their good looks. He looked down at the iPhone in his lap, a bright green thing, and typed a couple of replies to Leo.] My little bro's in Gotham, and he seems fine. For Gotham standards. Haven't heard from my sister yet, I'm giving her a little while longer before I hunt her ass down. [His response to Clem was that of slight concern for his family; he was always concerned for his family. He then turned to the both of them.] Your folks doing okay?

[Clem heard said ornery cuss of a damn brother before she saw him, and she smiled some as she slid up on the stretcher beside Mikey. There was something about living with folks days on end, while risking your life alongside them, that made folks close fast. She'd realized that early in her days in a firehouse, and for the girl who'd relationships had always been Sunday Come Calling, it was a real nice change. No one at home would understand her liking it, sleeping on some twin bed and men all around, nothing designer and not a damn one of them knew a thing about waltzing. But Clem liked it plenty, and she liked Carroll, gruff and sweet like he was, like some teddy bear. He reminded her of Graham some, and she leaned her head against his good shoulder as he made fussing sounds about her stitches. Oh, and she pressed a big old kiss to his cheek first, like that was close enough to his hurt shoulder to go counting for kissing it better.] I'm glad your brother's good. You need help hunting for your sister, you just say. [She meant it.] Think my folks are fine. They all took off for another door until it was over.

[She nodded toward the approaching grump in the wheelchair.] All save that one.

[Much as she sounded teasing, Clem didn't like that hurt and exhaustion in Declan's eyes, and it made her frown hard enough to hurt her head. Her gaze slid on down to Declan's legs, looking for whatever had him in that chair. She wasn't wise to Declan's fondness for pills, or she would have worried herself more over it. Seemed growing up some, it came with fretting more than usual. Just like she was fretting over Joy, over in some strange place with an errant daddy and a cousin watching with too much on her hands.]

You take a crutch if they say, Dec. What'd you hurt, honey? [She asked it soft as she could, though she didn't have a voice made for softness much, not if she wasn't dealing with someone dying hard on her stretcher.] We're fine. Your concern is real overwhelming, so tone it down some. [She smiled some, tired and red around the eyes.]

One good thing. I think we got us a new house mother. Name's Evie, y'all talk her up to the Chief tomorrow.

[Declan was a shade too proud to admit injury, even while in a hospital and seated in a wheelchair. He gave Clementine a cantankerous look when she asked what hurt, like she'd somehow offended him by what she said or maybe even the sweet way she rested her head on Mikey's shoulder. It made him forget about the dull, pricking pain that radiated through the nerves in his leg. Or maybe whatever that nurse had stuck him with was beginning to do the job. He forced himself to relax, starting with a loosening of the neck and shoulders. For a moment, he'd been holding onto the tire grips of the wheelchair with knuckles gone clench-pale, but then he relented and forced the muscles in his arms to unbunch, his fingers to slacken. The pads of his thumbs coaxed along the firm rubber of the chair's tires.]

Just a little sore. [He said it while rolling forward, testing the weight and balance of the chair before he rocked back into a brief wheelie. The chair bounced back down to all four wheels once again. Playing around with the chair made for a minor distraction, although he went still at the mention of a new house mother. He squinted past the dull, lingering pain and tilted his head.]

Why? Is she a friend of yours? [Spontaneous kindness and generosity had never been a Murphy trait, but then again, they were only half.]

[Mikey's grin went soft and goofy as Clem pressed a kiss to his cheek, eyes still wide with concern for that wound and that stained bandage wrapped around her head. He wanted to nudge her to go back to the doctors and wait, but they'd all been worse for wear, he assumed. This? Well this was nothing, and maybe a lot of the engine was about to be outta commission for a couple of days, but again. Worse for wear. They could've lost one of their own, and they luckily came back with everyone. Mikey's laugh was gruff, however, when Declan claimed he was just a little sore, and there was teasing in his smile as he looked over at him, He was careful not to move too much to avoid knocking Clem's noggin around.]

Evie. [Mikey saluted. And then, he reconsidered. A thoughtful hum.] You're just trying not to be the only girl around, aren't you, peach? [He poked her side gently before turning back to Declan.] You're gonna have to learn to behave yourself. Not just glare at our new mom all the time, bro. Don't wanna scare her away.

[Clem was just now relearning her damn brother, after all those years apart, and she was figuring that his cantankerous and ornery manner maybe didn't mean he hated her more than her momma hated bargain shoes. Even if it weren't true, she'd decided to believe it, and it was good as done. She grinned sweeter when he looked at her, and she was glad to see his shoulders losing their stiffness, though she took all that stiffness to be on account of working, living, surviving and whatever had him in that chair to begin with.

Easy, she slid off the stretcher and lifted her head off Mikey's shoulder, that poke earning him a poke right back as she moved slow. She winced some as her socked feet touched the hospital floor, her head screaming as she moved. Declan was playing with that chair, and she walked up behind him and rubbed at his shoulders without asking, working at knots there, even though she knew it'd make him look at her like rattlers again.]

Evie's a real good friend of Graham's. [She talked easy at Mikey over Declan's head.] Graham's my brother-in-law, and I best still be the only girl around here that matters. [She wasn't even joking; Clem, she was vain as could be, and she didn't even pretend to be apologetic any.] But she's been having hard times, and figure we could use someone making sure the beds get made. I sure ain't looking after all you.

I don't glare.

[Although Declan was kind of glaring when he protested that much. As opposed as he was to long-lasting, unjustified cheerfulness, Declan found it impossible to dislike Mikey because of it. Mikey radiated with positive energy and there were no apparent ulterior motives for smiling as often as he did. Initially, it had been alien to Declan, but now he accepted it. Declan wasn't raised to be in good spirits, but the smiles were beginning to come easier than they ever used to, particularly when he thought that nobody was watching. Declan had always been happiest when on his own. As a child, wandering the urbane gardens of that massive Murphy home. In adulthood, cast out to sea without a word of English to be heard for weeks at a time. Maybe it was just the quiet he liked, but there was no such thing as quiet at the firehouse, with the cavorting shivaree of video games and masculine laughter on less active afternoons... and despite that, he was adjusting just fine.

He didn't even flinch away when Clementine began to rub the tension out of his shoulders. The muscles there were knotted like rocks, but the pain of that was a minor echo when compared to his knee. He hadn't even noticed that his shoulders were sore until Clementine touched him. His exhale was rough, and he rolled one shoulder forward with a stretch. Carrying around all of that equipment and injured people definitely took its toll.]

So long as she keeps the coffee pot full, I'm sure the Evie woman will do fine. [He glanced between the two of them, twisting his head to catch a glimpse of Clementine.] Did a doctor give both of you the 'all clear'?

[I don't glare, and Mikey pulled a face, mouthing the words with him before crossing his eyes at Declan's glare. Mikey could be serious if he wanted to, but what was the point in that? Life was too short, and things might not be great, but they would get better. They always got better. That pervading cheeriness had gotten him through life, and those rose-colored glasses were fixated tight on his face. He was effervescent. It annoyed people, sure, but whatever. He was basically a human golden retriever; he'd come back, tail wagging and tongue lolling, every single time.

So yeah, Declan was ornery, he was cranky, but Mikey liked him anyway. And that wasn't just because he tended to like everyone.

With a sigh, he leaned back, careful not to put his shoulder against the wall, though his head hit it with a thunk. His grin was wolfish and playful, and he looked at Clem through one eye.] You'll always be the only girl that matters, peach. [His chin dropped down again, and he nodded in agreement.] Think we can convince her to beat Sullivan into cleaning up after himself when he makes his gross ass vegan foods? If she can do that, she is my fav-- second favorite lady ever.

[Clementine smiled down at her ornery brother, because it was real cute, him saying he didn't glare any, and all while glaring. But she focused good on the knots in his shoulders as he rolled and stretched, figuring where things hurt easy from his moving. She'd rubbed her daddy's shoulders all the time, had Clementine, and her daddy always said she had real good hands.] The Evie woman's going to be real grateful for your belief in her, Dec. [Clem was grinning when she teased, because she'd sounded just as snooty 'bout her own damnself once. Hanging around with men real fond of plaid had tempered her some, but she still saw her own wealth in Declan's demeanor, and she couldn't hold it against him any.

Mikey grinned wolfish and playful, and Clem leaned clear over Declan to swat at Mikey.] You sweet talk her some for me? Be nice, both of you, and say hi, and I'll see she beats up Sullivan.

[Declan, he got himself a press of her nose to his hair before she straightened back.] And we're getting cleared in a minute, impatient man. Just rest yourself until then.

[Declan rarely needed adequate reason to get impatient, but this moment was justified. Now that some minutes had gone by, Declan could tell that the drug he'd received wasn't any kind of painkiller. It was likely meant to reduce the swelling in his knee, which was logical but felt useless without the warm spread of relief that came from the pills he had back at home. Tension radiated from the core of his body, and his attention was more focused on the cramp in his leg than the conversation at hand, which he assumed was just some trademark flirting anyway.

Annoyed, Declan edged away from Clementine by leaning forward. He pushed the wheels of the chair and started off down the hospital's hallway with an announcement bitten back toward them.] I'm going to find that damn doctor and get us the hell out of here. [He vanished around the hallway's bend.]
