[Comm to Pepper P.]

Pepper. I need the containment unit in my lab, and I need it now. How close are you?

[Avengers Comms and Transcribed to Public.]

Hi, I accidentally kicked an anthill named HYDRA and they’re pissed. Backup might be nice. [Explosion not transcribed, but it’s on the news by now.] Lots of backup. Tons. I’d take your grandma with a slingshot. Ow!

[Tony is in a heap and not jumping up to join more witty repartee. No visible wounds, but the armor, both on him and in pieces around him, is still smoking.

A few stray agents are still running past. Several take the time to pause and open short-range sidearm fire.]

[In the end, she doesn't need the big guy, not to see. The red thing slithers out of sight, visible from the tank she's standing on, cupola up and the driver convinced to drive it and clear a path for her injured toward the rest stop. Ok, so he's a tiny young agent, and her gun's as persuasive as her whip. Anyway.] Lost visual on your puddle, Stevie. It spread out in a sea of red, and disappeared. I can't even see it with Eddie's goggles and their heat detection.

[Steve is quiet on his end of the comm. He had been moving to his knees, just before he heard the herd-pound of agents, and in a contraction of instinct, he crouches over Tony's prone form, shield up. Bullets ping off hard, taking shining paint in flecks and sparks, and in a spectacular jerk of muscle beneath blue, sends the star-and-stripes flying. It dings once in a geometrical glance off of the body of a semi-trailer to take out the last two agents running, blows to the back of the head—a glance off of bone, and back to him.

It's the only time he tears his attention away, and once it's back on Tony, he leans over him, ear to his lips, listening for breath, for gurgling, for anything that would tell him if it's safe to move him, even though every muscle in the man screamed and told him to get Tony somewhere safe, now. He knew what bad looked like, and this, wreckage and metal so warped it smokes, is bad.

Finally, his voice comes through, but it's not giving direction to anyone listening. It's a quiet, ragged prayer made in war, over and over, like fingers along the pearls of a rosary.] C'mon, Tony, you bastard. Give me something.

[Hulk hears Cap, but he's almost too distracted by smashing one last jet to respond. His turn is slow, but when he does, it's Kitty that's talking to him. His eyes go between her and Cap - black to stars - and he throws down the piece of what might have once been a jet wing. It hits the ground with a crunch, and then he moving, crossing the space between the pile of jet debris and the tank that Kitty is standing on. It's moving slowly (for him) with her on the very top, and he grunts with a frown as he comes up next to it, ambling along.

Did she need him? Cap had said. She had called. If she didn't, where was Tony?]

[Most of the helmet has gone to pieces, and JARVIS has been silent in the Washington DC area for a good long while. Tony is breathing, no whistles or gurgles, and it looks like that black undersuit he wears has done a lot to protect him from the half-melted armor. But watch your fingers, Cap, some of it is still red hot. The chest piece is still glowing a dim, sullen blue.]

[He heals quickly—and he knows it, so he doesn't hesitate to scoop the bent and broken Tony into his arms, shield slotted onto his back. Steve stands, so very careful not to jostle Tony more than necessary, and he starts walking. His voice is steady when it comes over the comms, but whatever's happening in the fight around them as it dwindles to tinder has clearly gone unnoticed.] Bucky, I need that jet.

[It's a lucky thing that the jet is capable of vertical landings. Now that there is nothing left in the air to fight, he's been firing on what's left of Hydra on the ground. It requires only a sharp turn, deftly excuted, to bring the jet in for a landing off the road. The bay door is slightly crimped where he used it to slide in and take the jet for himself, but it opens now, the back dropping open like a mouth.

Once the jet is safely on the ground, Bucky comes out of the driver's seat and down toward Steve and his cargo.] We can strap him in with the belts. [This jet was outfitted for troop transport, so there's room to spare in the back, and a fold-down cot that flips out of the wall for just this purpose, bringing the injured back.]
