[Comm to Pepper P.]

Pepper. I need the containment unit in my lab, and I need it now. How close are you?

[Avengers Comms and Transcribed to Public.]

Hi, I accidentally kicked an anthill named HYDRA and they’re pissed. Backup might be nice. [Explosion not transcribed, but it’s on the news by now.] Lots of backup. Tons. I’d take your grandma with a slingshot. Ow!

Carnage
[info]thelazarus
2015-06-06 05:28 am UTC (link)
[A few moments later, tendrils arc out from the truck, snagging four nearby Hydra agents who were unlucky enough to have landed closeby. They disappear, one conscious enough to scream, into the hole in the roof.

Then comes a storm of red and black, slick and wet, galloping out on all fours. There is no endgame here, no playing with food. Carnage exposes its mouth of bright teeth. It only wants out and it wants aWaY, but it doesn't pour itself across the freeway and disappear. For some reason, it weaves.

Once anyone comes close enough, the reason becomes obvious. Carnage isn't moving right - it's stuttering forward, slicing through a crowd of Hydra operatives that converge near its flank, a burst of scarlet knives splintering from its melting side and slicing a hole in their ranks. But it's weaving. It's trying to shake something off, or hold something down. The comm is dead, but close enough and you can hear it:]

[He tries the lightning first, dark thunderclouds blooming in the sky above, sparks skittering over the head of Mjolnir before arcing outward wildly, connecting with anything made of metal.

Enjoy that power boost, Tony.

Other projectiles he simply takes a swing at, grunts heard over the comms, sending them back to their launch points, all in the hopes of clearing the air enough to get through to the truck.]

[Iron Man gets hit like the energizer bunny. He blows the tread off a jeep trying to turn him into roadkill and sits up in time to fire three well placed shots that clears a second path for Helena.]

[In her human form, she's kinda squishy. A little too squishy. Over the comms:] Don't be alarmed.

[Which is maybe a cause to be alarmed.] And don't shoot at me! [Her comm goes quiet as she shifts and comes charging in full gargoyle cat mode at Carnage (thanks for clearing the way, Tony). Anyone close enough will her hear roar before she rushes the mass of harlequin colors and plows in, snapping at the nearest Carnage and not-Jason appendage.]

I don't know a sure way to get it off him. [Curiously dead of tone.] Do we need to make a call?

[Spiraling into a truck and throwing it into the air. He blasts it midflight.]

[Gamely.] Okay.

Move out of the way, stone dog thing.

[A new high-pitched whine starts up. Blue light begins to shatter white at the center, over where Tony is standing in the middle of a crater of various types of shrapnel. The sound begins to hurt.]

[The earpiece vibrates painfully with the noise. He just makes a strangled noise as he continues to put out HYDRA agents with his shield—but he does look over, from the thick of it, because is that supposed to happen?]

[Two tanks, rumbling closer. The thing's tendrils snake through their hatches and swing around inside, scrambling their drivers. The tanks roll on, blind, now, rolling over anyone who doesn't clear from their path, cutting a swath through Hydra toward the cars full of civilians at the other end of the battle scene.

Carnage won't be kept here, not by tanks or helicopters, not by a gargoyle, though the last earns its full attention. It can't fEEd, not here, and it's still not to full strength. Away is what it needs, somewhere dark and quiet, somewhere it can hide, but it seems as if half its body wants to run to safety and half wants to stay . It fires tendrils like pistons at the gargoyle, punching through the men between it.

But those tendrils fall short, sputtering, and Carnage rears back without warning, like it's trying to kick a rider. It's trying to lose something, smother something down. It's made a real mistake, but now it's too late to disengage.

It tilts forward, like a tree in the wind, but its legs grow roots that pierce the concrete and hold it fast. It shrieks, moving forward, holding down, and then the sky begins to burn with blue light, and the shrieking becomes louder, white eyes sputtering madly at the edges, broad teeth gleaming in the glare. It's not the light, but the sound, the SOuNd. Its tendrils whip and scrabble for anything to pull it free, anything.]

That thing is so gross. Is it supposed to be doing that? [Tony never have actually seen Carnage in action. Iron Man has one foot braced and the other forward, and Thor's lightning is crackling over shoulders and hands, focused in the chest. The whine shatters glass in the forward direction he's facing, at Carnage.]

Oh. [Distracted.] You might want to cover your ears.

[In the space of six seconds, the sound becomes a screaming tone, and then (mercifully) vanishes out of human hearing. Invisibly, the Iron Man suit lances something forward, with Tony propelled back, as if from an explosion. The lightning doesn't expel a visible blue pulse, like usual; it just winks out, becoming something else, and everything in front of Iron Man (several hostiles, a few smashed cars, the transport, and the inky gross thing) get hit with a sonic blast initially designed for Loki.

It makes a soundless womp sensation felt half a mile in every direction.]

[Steve has heightened senses, and that sound makes him jerk his earpiece out with a not-so-nice:] Shit! [His head feels like it's splitting, and then it's over. That sensation settles in the stomach, and it takes a second of blinking to realize the agents he'd been embroiled with have turned to converge their weapons on Tony.

Replacing the comm quickly, and taking out a fair number of firearms with two well-aimed shield throws, he warns:] Watch out, Stark! They didn't like that.

[Nobody likes that. Nobody. She crouches away from the light, finally covering her ears with her paws when the sound gets to be too fucking much, but then it's gone and her tail twitches at the press of sensation.

Sound gone (and her head shaking back and forth to get the ringing out of her ears) she pads forward. She's closest and breathes in deep if she needs to give the warning that Carnage is still up.]

[Hulk had pummeled the helicopter into scrap metal and parts (tossing approaching Hydra agents away any time they got close enough to be annoying) by the time the sound started. He stops the attack on the already destroyed helicopter and winces away, as if taking a particularly brutal hit, followed by a roar in Tony's direction, trying to drown out the sound with his own. It doesn't work, and he finally leaves the debris-filled crater he's created and begins to stomp toward the Iron Man suit. The sound seems to affect him for a few seconds longer than the humans on the scene, but eventually even he stops, snorting and shaking his head, like he's trying to clear water from his ear.

With the sound gone, he doesn't feel the need to crush Tony into bits (recognizing the redgoldfriend of the suit). Also, finally distracted from the fun of helicopter smashing, he sees Cap. He likes Cap. Cap tells him to smash. And lightning. That means Thor. He doesn't like Thor as much. He knows there are some missing. Some that he knows. That were there when they smashed aliens. It takes a minute for him to process, and it's the rumble of tanks that catches his attention next. Tanks and scared people. He doesn't like scared people. The tanks need to stop.

He roars again (somehow missing that wriggling thing that's catching everyone else's attention), and he leaps over everything to smash the tanks together. No tanks means no scared people in front of the tanks. Good!]

[It happens all in a moment.

Just before the blast, Carnage tries to whip itself forward, out of range, but it can't. Its legs are rooted so deeply in the concrete that, when it throws its considerable weight, chunks of the road separate and come up, exposing a thousand tiny tendrils, knitted into the ground. Even as it pulls, those roots just dig in deeper. It squeals in a voice that sounds only a little like its host. Tendrils reach out for leverage to pull it free, even as it pierces the mind of the man that it clings to and tries to scrape obedience in.

It isn't enough. The blast knocks cars and human bodies forward and into the air, and it hits Carnage so hard that its grip on the concrete rips loose, and it tumbles fast and far. Somewhere near the ground, it releases the body inside it, which tumbles, rolls, and lies still, face down.

Shapeless now, a roiling mass of red, it slides across the edge of the road. Then it drops away, disappearing from sight.]

Goddammit, Bruce. I told you to stay Canadian.

[Chaos. Any of the scientists that might recognize Carnage has escaped are long dead. The remaining agents seem unsure about who to attack as dust motes sting the eyes and everyone waits through the ringing in their ears.]

Cap. It's running.

[The suit is making ominous reboot-flashing sparks, but Iron Man struggles out of more debris and takes off into the air in one streaming blue streak.

That's when HYDRA air support arrives, easily confused with American military and rescue services. A fighter roaring past fires a tiny computer-guided missile at the red and gold suit heading up and after the Symbiote. There's a blinding explosion. Heat is felt on every face, and debris goes everywhere.

All hostiles make a break for it. ]
